Benson on road to recovery

Dayton’s Josh Benson has shed the sling he’s been wearing since having surgery to repair his dislocated right shoulder two months ago and has begun his grueling recovery to get back to full strength.

The 6-foot-9 freshman from Dunbar — who will be redshirted this season — has been doing range-of-motion exercises with five-pound weights with his right arm. He’s also been doing intense lower-body exercises to strengthen his legs.

“This will be a year to develop and learn new things, so I can come back strong next year,” he said.

Asked how he’s handled not being able to don a uniform this season, he replied: “At times, it’s hard, especially when we had those close games, but I just knew we’d pull them out.”

Young fan meets players Will Homan, a 6-year-old student at Incarnation Catholic School in Centerville, experienced a rare treat when he ran into UD players at the Greater Cincinnnati Airport on Friday.

The Flyers were on their way to Massachusetts for their game Saturday with UMass, while Homan and his family were off on a vacation to Naples, Fla.

Will attends virtually every UD home game and showed the depth of his knowledge of the Flyers as he mingled with the team at a ticket counter. A relative would point to a player, and Will identified each by name. He easily picked out role players Rob Lowery, Stephen Thomas and Luke Fabrizius. The only one who stumped him was freshman Paul Williams.

Most adults couldn’t ID a Wright State player let alone a six yr old. Shows the REAL difference in fan loyalty of a real team, imo…besides the differential in ticket sales which is enormous…explain that on an arguement to play one another. I can’t hear you…!?! HELLO??!??

UMass got totally destroyed at Wisconsin Green Bay from the Horizon League. I’m thinking that UMass will give us a decent run though because Green Bay is pretty tough.

sam, that is not a bad loss. Wisconsin Green Bay is a top 100 team and they would beat most of A10 teams pretty badly on their home court.

I love how huge ticket sales and a loyal fan base make up for dissapointing seasons year after year. The programs a joke. Butler goes to Xavier in a rebuilding year and comes away with a W. Don’t worry though you can still watch, NCAA tournament games at UD Arena in March while the fans of the teams that will actualy make it to the big dance are forced to sit in the 300 and 400 levels of that dump. What a joke. They might as well sit a home and watch it on tv so they can actually see the game.

Matt, I don’t understand the hostility directed toward the Arena and the UD staff that have directed a record number of NCAA basketball events at the Arena. Many prominent college basketball pundits have proclaimed the UD Arena and its fans as a premiere basketball venue for NCAA tourney participation. The eight teams that will come to the Arena this year will get lower arena seat allocations. And, as you point out many of the fans of these teams will be relegated to the upper arena. I know from personal experience by way of attending many of these first round games dating back to the 70s, that the fans that come in from out of town are thrilled to watch their team in a true basketball arena. Attendance at the first round games this year could take on a different face, however, as it appears there is a good chance the Flyers may get their chance to go “dancing”. Many of the fans who purchased tickets to the games here will be selling them so they can follow the Flyers to their appointed first round site. Go Flyers…just win the next game.

Matt makes a decent point though. Butler went into the Cinta’s center on their first try and knock off Xavier. Why can’t we do that?
