When police approached a group of men who appeared to be gambling in an apartment parking lot on Cornell Ridge Drive Tuesday night, the men scattered, according to a Dayton Police arrest report.

One officer chased a man clutching a fistful of money down Gettysburg Avenue. He caught up with him when the suspect tried to run through some dense bushes on Little Richmond Road and became stuck. The man crawled back out of the shrubbery and surrendered. He had $100 in his hand and more than $400 in his pockets, according to the report.

He told the officer he ran because the guys he was throwing dice with yelled that the police were coming and told everybody to run.

Back in the parking lot, police confiscated two red dice and $15 in cash from the parking lot and detained a man they said threw something as officers approached. It turned out the item he threw was another red die, according to the report.

He was issued a court summons to face possible public gambling charges.

The man who ran from police was arrested and could face charges of obstructing official business, public gambling, and failure to comply with the order of an officer, all misdemeanors.

A man who allegedly shoplifted several items from the United Dairy Farmers store on Brown Street, told the clerk, “don’t be mad at me,” before walking out, according to a Dayton Police report.

The man entered the store shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday. According to the police report he walked into the aisles several times and brought items to the counter as if he was going to pay for them. Each time, however, the clerk said she saw him put additional items in his coat pockets.

When he approached the counter one last time he asked if the store accepted debit cards and the clerk said yes, according to the report.

That’s when the man made his plea to not be mad and walked out without paying for the items in his pockets.

The only items listed as stolen on the police report are 12 ounces of turkey and a bottle of detergent for an estimated value of $22.

The clerk said the suspect got away in a silver Ford F150 truck.

A woman who left her purse at a Dayton bar Sunday night allegedly returned and assaulted the bar manager.

According to a Dayton Police report, the unidentified woman claimed $37 was missing from the purse when a friend retrieved it from Jimmie’s Ladder 11. The manager told police that he had opened the woman’s wallet just to get her name since she had left without paying her $70 bill.

A man who showed up to get the purse paid the bill in full, but a half hour later the suspect was back at the bar, 936 Brown St.

She became upset with the manager about the alleged missing money and threw two empty beer bottles at him while he was standing behind the bar, the report states. She missed hitting him both times, but did break several bottles behind the bar.

The report states that the suspect also threw a candy dish from the hostess stand at the manager as she was leaving, hitting him in the leg.

The woman fled and police were unable to verify her identity based on the name given by the manager. Police will review surveillance video as part of their investigation. No charges have been filed.

A Dayton police officer spotted a known panhandler holding up a sign at the Interstate 75 exit to Main Street Thursday evening and booked the man into jail for the 186th time, according to a police report.

The suspect, 57, was most recently released from jail on April 5, a week before this new arrest.

Dayton Municipal Court records will only display 100 search results, but reveal that the man has indeed been arrested a lot. He was arrested by Dayton police 36 times in 2006 and more than 40 times in 2008.

Most of the offenses are minor misdemeanors including jaywalking and open container violations. He does have one felony conviction for possession of crack cocaine in 2007. He was sentenced to six months in prison.

On Thursday, the officer saw the man holding up a sign that said, “Anything will help, God bless.” When the man saw the officer he started walking away and hid the sign under his shirt.

Once under arrest, he told the officer that he panhandles to support a crack cocaine addiction and offered to show the officer, “some good crack houses,” if the officer let him go.

He was transported to the Montgomery County Jail where he was being held on $5,000 bond Friday evening. Panhandling is a misdemeanor.

Police responded to a call about someone entering a vacant house on Homewood Avenue Thursday evening. A caller said the man was wearing a purple shirt.

When they approached the area, officers spotted a man in a purple shirt carrying a shopping bag and got out of their cruiser to talk to him, according to a police report.

The man simply looked at officers and said, “You got me.”

Inside his bag were several blankets. He pointed out the house he took the blankets from, which was a boarded up, vacant home on the city’s nuisance housing list.

He was arrested for illegal entry into a nuisance property and breaking and entering. When officers placed the man in handcuffs he said, “I am being arrested?,” according to the report.

A man who had his car stolen from a Dayton gas station didn’t have to wait long to see it again. The thieves, believed to be teenagers, crashed the car and fled the scene just a few blocks away.

According to a police report, the victim left his car running while he ran into the BP gas station on Salem Avenue Thursday night. When he came out, he saw two men getting into the car. He tried to open the door and get them out, but the driver backed the vehicle away from him.

They backed up so quickly that they ended up in the yard of 815 West Grand Avenue, hitting a tree and knocking off a side mirror in the process. The thieves then fled west on Grand.

A few minutes later, police were called to a wreck at the intersection of Easton Avenue and Edgewood Drive where the same car had crashed in the yard of 814 Easton Ave. The thieves were no where to be found.

Police hope to look at surveillance video from the gas station to try and identify the suspects.

A Dayton mother is facing a misdemeanor shoplifting charge after she and several of her five children were caught on surveillance video hiding Dollar General merchandise in a stroller.

The woman entered the Dollar General at 445 Salem Avenue just before 10 a.m. this morning with her children, ages 14, 10, 7, 3 and an infant.

According to a police report, the store’s security cameras captured video of the 3-year-old girl and the 7 and 10-year-old boys putting items in the stroller. At one point the 7-year-old hand an item to his mother who then conceals the merchandise in the stroller, the report states. One of the boys also changed into new shoes while in the store.

The woman then paid for several items in her shopping cart and walked out. One of the boys soon returned to the store and hid another item under his shirt before walking out again, a clerk told police.

When the store owner confronted the family one of the boys handed over a toy gun and some candy and the mother returned some socks she said didn’t belong to her. She later denied to police any knowledge of the merchandise in the stroller, and began yelling at her children for concealing the items, according to the police report.

Police told the woman that she and her two sons will be charged with petty theft and ordered into court.

Items recovered by the store included children’s shoes, socks, clothing, underwear, toy guns and candy. The total value of the property was estimated at $50.

Dayton police had to quickly wake up a man slumped over in his vehicle on West Fairview Avenue Wednesday because his car was still in drive and rolling slowly down the street.

Police were called by a resident in the 200 block of Fairview who reported a man was passed out in a Chevy Malibu with the engine still running.

When officers arrived the car started to roll away and they banged on the locked door to get the driver’s attention, according to a police report.

The men set up a meeting in the Kroger parking lot on Needmore Road and several members of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force accompanied the agent to the meeting.

The man who showed up identified himself as “Tony” via cell phone and then approached the agent’s car and stuck out his hand, the report states.

Law enforcement officers exited their vehicles and arrested the suspect, who dropped six caps filled with suspected heroin.

The man was identified as Jamon Lacking, 23. He was taken into custody by Dayton police and faces possible charges of trafficking in drugs and possession of drugs, both felonies.

<![CDATA[A man driving past G & J Xtreme Auto Sports on North Main Street Wednesday saw a Chevy Tahoe in the parking lot with very familiar looking tires and rims.

He contacted police and met them at the shop to report that the tires and rims had been stolen from him in Trotwood several months ago.

According to the police report, he bought the 28-inch chrome rims and Kumho tires for $3,000 and had them on his pickup truck. His home in Trotwood was broken into a few months ago and the thieves took his keys out of the house and stole the truck. The truck was eventually recovered, but was missing the tires and rims.

He told police he recognized them immediately when he drove by the shop and saw them on the Tahoe.

He gave a detailed description of the rims to police and even had photos of his truck before the wheels were stolen.

According to the police report, officers were able to tell that the distinctive tires and rims were the same ones the victim was describing.

An employee at the shop said someone brought the SUV and tires in on Saturday, paid cash in advance and didn’t leave their name.

The shop removed the wheels for police who took them for evidence.

Police told the shop to tell the owner of the SUV that, “in order to pick up his rims, we would need him to come down to the Detective Section.”

A Dayton police officer checking out possible prostitution activity in the area of North Main Street and Marson Avenue Monday evening spotted some strange activity involving three parked cars, according to a police report.

When the officer noticed a woman duck down inside a parked Chevrolet Camaro he investigated and noticed people moving around inside a van directly behind the car. Also on Marson, the officer saw two people quickly leaving a Mercury Marquis that was parked haphazardly.

The female in the Camaro claimed to be waiting for her boyfriend. She had a four-year-old child with her. Her boyfriend was found in the van behind her with another man.

When asked about the smell of marijuana coming from the van, the boyfriend’s companion admitted to having smoked weed, but said, “It’s all gone. I smoked it earlier,” the report states.

According to the report, the men tried to claim they were simply sitting and smoking, but when the boyfriend was found to have $5,865 in his pocket and 86 Oxycodone pills, police became suspicious.

A search of the van revealed a digital scale, a small amount of cocaine in a plastic bag, and a loaded .40-caliber pistol.

The two men still denied accusations that a drug transaction was taking place, the report states, but text messages on their phones revealed they had set up the meeting. Text messages also revealed that one of the men, Wesley J. Tigner, had received what appeared to be drug orders from other individuals.

Tigner eventually admitted that he was trying to buy pills from the boyfriend, Glenn Covert, who was selling pills prescribed to his girlfriend, the report said. Covert would only say that he came to Dayton to snort cocaine with Tigner.

Tigner, 31, was arrested on possible charges of possession of criminal tools and possession of drugs, both felonies. Tigner has three prior possession of cocaine convictions in Montgomery County.

Covert, 40, has been charged with one count of carrying a conceal weapon and two counts of having weapons while under disability. He has prior drug and violent offense convictions that prevent him from being in possession of a gun. He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $30,000 bond.

A third man found hiding in the Mercury Marquis nearby was let go, but police discovered that he had been involved in a text message conversation with Tigner as well. Covert’s girlfriend was also let go without charges.
