Defendant’s brother arrested at courthouse after allegedly threatening witness

A Dayton man showed up for his brother’s court hearing Tuesday despite knowing that police were looking for him. He was arrested on the spot for allegedly intimidating a witness, a third degree felony.

The hearing at 9 a.m. at the Dayton Municipal Courthouse, 301 W. Third St., involved a domestic violence incident between Rick L. White, 42, and his girlfriend. She says he broke her arm and gave her a concussion. He is charged with felonious assault and she was scheduled to testify about the incident.

But less than 12 hours before the court appearance she called the cops to report that White’s brother, Ronnie Lee White, Jr., had threatened her.

According to a police report, she received a message from Ronnie White, 41, to call her back and did so at about 9 p.m. Monday.

She told police that he wanted her to drop the charges and told her not to testify. He allegedly said, “I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you from going to court tomorrow.” He also allegedly told her to say that she was drunk and fell down, causing her injuries.

An employee overheard part of the conversation and confirmed that she heard the male on the phone say, “You should not show up. Drop the charges,” according to the report.

The victim informed police where Ronnie White lives and they made contact with his girlfriend who was on the phone with him when police arrived.

An officer talked to Ronnie White and told him to come home so they could talk, but police were not able to locate him Monday night and noted in the report that he sounded intoxicated. Police put out a message to all officers to be on the lookout for White and lock him up if he was found due to his attempts to intimidate a witness.

But officers didn’t have to search for him for very long. He was taken into custody at 9:05 a.m. at the courthouse.

Drive-by shooting leaves two wounded; was retaliatory, police say

Police are looking for a suspect in a Monday night drive-by, retaliatory shooting in the 100 block of Whitmore Avenue that left two men wounded.

According to Sgt. Dan Mauch, the shooting was sparked by a Sunday night assault in which a family member of the two wounded men was the victim.

Officers first responded to 4600 block of Midway Avenue just before 11:45 p.m. on a report of the suspect in the Sunday assault being spotted. When they pulled up to the Midway address, they heard five to seven shots fired just north of them. When they arrived on Whitmore, they found the two wounded men and two witnesses.

One of the men was shot once in the right leg, the other shot twice in the right leg. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

The victims and witnesses told police they spotted a car waiting at the stop sign at the intersection on Whitmore. When the car slowly proceeded past them and the driver rolled down the passenger-side window, they sought cover. Once the gunfire ceased, they fled to the Whitmore Apartments to call police. Police recovered several 9mm shell casings from the scene.

One of the victims was able to describe the shooter, and identified him as “Freddie”, the same name as the suspect in the Sunday assault.

In that assault, the relative of the wounded men went to a house in the 200 block of Almond Avenue to retrieve her cell phone. While in the house, an 18-year-old man, also identified as “Fred”, punched her in the mouth.

“This is an on-going problem, retaliation,” Sgt. Mauch said. “We don’t have the full story, yet.”

Police said they believe they know the name of the suspect.
