Police grab Oregon District robber within minutes

For two young men from Preble County, it was a Saturday night to remember and a Sunday morning to forget.

The pair was bar-hopping in the Oregon District, enjoying the bright lights and hospitality of the big city. They got separated from their Dayton friend — with whom they were to spend the night — but decided to go it alone after a bartender told them the Oregon District was a safe place.

Which it usually is.

After closing time — with no place to stay and not sure they were in any shape to drive — the pair retired to their car to sleep what remained of the night away.

They were awakened later Sunday morning when a man approached the car. One of the pair opened the door and got punched in the mouth for his effort. The man told the pair he had a gun and to get out of the car. They did, and the man drove off with their car, including one of their wallets.

He didn’t get far. Police found Jacob L. Cole, 30, several blocks away. He had abandoned the vehicle — he blew out a tire fleeing the scene — in the middle of the street.

Cole is in the Montgomery County Jail charged with two counts of robbery. His criminal record includes convictions for robbery and possession of heroin, plus two convictions for domestic violence for which he was sentenced to two years.

While waiting Monday for their interview with detectives, the two young men said it would be a while before they returned to party in Dayton.
