Stolen car found 20 feet from scene of alleged crime
Dayton police were called to the Sunoco fuel station at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Wyoming Street at 3 a.m., Dec. 1, where they found a man claiming he had been robbed at gunpoint while trying to pick up a prostitute.
The victim, who was uninjured, said he had been “eyeing” a female at the Denny’s restaurant on South Main Street when a male she was with offered the victim sex with that female for $70.
After some haggling over price, the victim said he got in his car with the male in the passenger seat and the female in the back and was told to follow a van that was carrying eight people.
According to the police report, the victim followed the van to the area of Colorado and Wyoming Street and pulled into an alley. Police later determined the alleged crime took place in an alley off of Illinois Avenue a few blocks away.
The victim said when he got out of his vehicle approximately 10 black males and females ran up and told him to give them his money. He said one claimed to have a gun, but he never saw it. One of the males allegedly removed the victim’s keys, wallet and cell phone from his pockets. The group then left with his car and the victim walked to the Sunoco to call police.
The victim could not give descriptions of any of the people involved, but police broadcast a description of the van and the victim’s car. A short time later, an officer found the car parked next to a house on Illinois Avenue. The vehicle was recovered approximately 20 yards east of where it was taken from, according to the report. The keys were not found.
Officers also found a van matching the description nearby. Curiously it had children’s car seats in the middle row making it impossible for eight people to sit in the van as the victim has described.
The incident ended with both vehicles being towed. The van because it had expired plates that belonged to another vehicle, and the victim’s car because he didn’t have keys and refused an officer’s offer to help him retrieve an extra set. According to the report he told police, “Tow it, I don’t care.”
Police gave the man a ride to the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center where he had a room, at which time he told an officer that he had paid prostitutes for sex three to five times in the last week. He denied it being dangerous saying, “I asked the guy at Denny’s if he was going to kill me before we left and he said no, so I knew I going to be okay,” according to the police report.
