Man angry at inanimate object attacks sign pole with rock

A 41-year-old man with an apparent drinking problem had a problem with a city sign pole.

Two puzzled police officers were at the stop light at Huffman and South Smithville last week when they saw the man throw a rock at a street sign pole. He picked up the large rock again, raised it over his head and threw the rock with both hands at the defenseless pole.

The officers approached the man and cuffed him — perhaps to protect the pole from further violence.

Asked what he was doing, the man replied, “I’m trying to knock the pole down.”

Asked why, he replied that the pole made him mad, using colorful language.

The man explained the city once had a small, thin pole for its street signs at the intersection. He told officers he got mad at the pole and knocked it down. The city replaced it with a sturdier pole. That pole, the man said, was always in his way so he was trying to knock it down.

Officers noted the man appeared “highly intoxicated.”

The pole suffered only minor injuries.

The man was taken to the county lockup. He later was charged with public intoxication, his sixth such charge in the past two years.
