Drugs traded for televisions, iPods, man tells police

In the space of little more than two hours Monday, July 26, Fifth District officers found drugs and weapons in two apartments in the same complex in the 300-block of Superior.

At second shift rollcall, officers were advised the apartment complex management and neighbors were concerned about suspect drug trade out of several apartments. Three officers decided they would knock on the apartment doors and advise the occupants of the complaints.

Shortly before 6 p.m., officers knocked on a fourth-floor apartment door. When a woman opened the door, they could see a man in the apartment who apparently was cutting or handling drugs. Officers entered the apartment and spotted an assault rifle leaning in one corner of the living room and a bolt action rifle in another corner.

Sitting out of the cushions of a love seat in the living room was a pistol butt. Moving the cushions, officers found a semiautomatic pistol. Officers also found numerous baggies, hypodermic needles, five digital scales and slightly more than 5 grams of heroin.

James Washington Hall, 53, told officers all the guns and drugs were his. He denied, however, selling the drugs. He just trades the drugs for things he can sell for cash to buy more drugs.

Hall said people would stop by and smoke or snort the drugs with him and brings items — televisions, game systems, iPods or weapons.

Hall told police he had never fired any of the three weapons. He traded $20 of heroin for the assault rifle, $10 of heroin for the bolt action rifle and another $10 of heroin for the pistol.

Hall was transported to the county lockup where he awaits an initial court appearance on possible multiple felony counts.

Back on the streets after delivering Hall to the jail, the officers decided to knock on another apartment door and advise the occupant of the complaints of drug use in the apartment. When allowed in by the occupant, officers spotted drugs and drug paraphernalia. The occupant was arrested, and crack cocaine and heroin seized.
