Dope, weapons and cash uncovered on a shooting call
Police were called Friday evening, July 23, to the 2700-block of North Main around 5:15 on a report of a man shot inside a residence.
Instead of a victim, they found nearly 14 pounds of marijuana, an assault rifle, a 9 mm handgun and $5,000 in cash. And a 19-year-old man who claimed he didn’t live there and was only dog-sitting for a friend for a couple days.
After finding a cable bill, identifying the 19-year-old as the resident, police arrested Shawn D. Smith and took him to the county lockup. He was charged Monday with felony drug possession.
The anonymous emergency call had several squad cars descend on the house. After several minutes of knocking, Smith opened the steel front door, and officers entered to make sure there was no one inside in need of medical attention. They found no wounded male.
They did find the marijuana, the SKS assault rifle and the cash stashed in the house’s duct work.
Police also found the 9 mm pistol, digital scales, heroin, and two steel bars used to barricade the front and back doors.
Neighbors told police there had been a lot of traffic in and out of the house.
