Struck pedestrian chases down, beats driver
DAYTON - Officers are trying to sort out a fight that erupted after a pedestrian struck by a car, along with his friends, chased down the driver and confronted him.
Police responded to a call of the struck pedestrian at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, near the corner of Third and Jefferson streets, according to police.
The pedestrian told officers he was hurt when struck by the car, but managed to get to the driver, along with a group of people he was walking with, according to police.
The group then started beating on the driver of the car, police said. No arrests have been made at this time, but police are still on the scene trying to sort out the ordeal.

If the pedestrian was jaywalking when he got hit and the driver had stopped, then I say throw the pedestrian and his friends in jail for assualt.

I work in and enviroment where I am the only Afro-American. When I mention I live on the Westside of Dayton, You should hear the responses. I often wonder why, however, after reading this incident and the response to it,I think I now know why.

Have you ever noticed how all the people with no where to go and nothing to do slow down to a crawl in the crosswalks downtown.

No one should hit/brush a pedestrian. Always try to give right of way to them even if you are held up for a while. People can be lame and jaywalk in traffic. You would never get over that in your lifetime if you killed a person.

Sounds like the pedestrian didn’t get hurt badly since he was able to chase the car down. The driver was probably hurt worse with the beating he took. The pedestrian & friends should be cited as well for their behavior.

Have you ever noticed the incredible amount of restraint that you have to exercise when you’re driving downtown and Madame Hats is crossing the street?

If they were jay walking, they deserved to get hit. They have cross walks for a reason! If they were in a cross walk, then maybe the driver deserved the beating!

My husband yielded to jaywalkers in the same area last year & when they motioned for him to go (yet kept walking), they approached his car & started beating on it. When they saw him on the cell phone, they took off. Of course, DPD acted as if we wasted their time. Probably the same group of uneducated DPS drop-outs!

Pedestrians have the right of way, however some of the pedestrians of the teen/early 20’s age group seem to dare the drivers to hit them by walking slowly and stopping to talk/text/taunt while downtown. I suspect the driver had enough of this and jumped the gun a bit too fast but by having the pedestrian’s friends attack the driver instead of calling the police faults him as much or more than the driver, as I see it.

Now that Obama is in office you betta yield to the black man. Its a black thing…whites just don’t understand. Iy’s disrespectfull to hit a black man..it hurts his pride so he must beat someone to get hes street cread back.

Oh yeah poppawu - that’s answer to everything right. I am more inclined to believe that this driver didn’t stop, because he saw a group of thugs (not men or even boys - to unclassy to be called that)running after his car. No sane person would stop. The driver should be cited, and these thugs need to have their butts in jail with all the other thugs.

Some drivers have no empathy for pedestrians or cyclist because they’ve never been a pedestrian or a cyclist on the street with vehicles. It really is life or death. Put yourself in other peoples shoes. Would you turn that quickly if your daughter was in the crosswalk or tail that bike so closely if your mother were on it? I get the pedestrians frustration, although I don’t support violence. I prefer the middle finger. It doesn’t solve anything, but I feel better.

Another PRIME reason to stay away from downtown.Of course the poor reporting did not give details like: was the person jaywalking, or dart out in front of the car. OR did the driver go through a traffic light? Like downtown Dayton, this paper is a joke as well!

Devilnmissjones7, We know you work at a Dayton (downtown) school. You really should not talk like that in public or someone will print it out and give it to one of your supervisors. All of your posts are public and while you may disagree with someone, it is unprofessional to swear like you do. I forgive you, but the question is, do you use that type of language in front of the children?

ROFL…just the headline alone had me laughing. I don’t blame them one bit. If they had to chase down who hit him…the obviously the driver didn’t stop when he hit a pedestrian. That’s a hit & run in my book.

This is probably the real story. This kid and his “group of friend” aka gang members were harassing a crack head that was trying to score when the driver struck one of the gang bangers. They chased the driver down and beat the crap out of him.

i think dayton needs a hybrid word for hillybilly and ghetto. hmmmm… what do you think about “hilletto”? or how about “ghettilly”? the word would be used to disparage a person of unknown race with the stereotyped attributes of hillybilly or ghetto behaviour without being racist. Maybe Stephen Colbert can come up with a good one.

The pedestrian might have had the right to chase down the driver, but if his friends joined in, then his friends should be charged with assault. They weren’t the ones who were hit. I see a lawsuit here.

I work in Dayton, I hate driving anywhere near downtown. And it’s not just there that you have to put up with that crap of people walking slow and making you wait. They act like we owe them something, like yeah whitey you can wait on my lazy a$$.. I don’t owe them a damn thing. Get a job and stop waitin on Obama to pay your mortgage… And you wonder why people are racist ?? HELLO???

So in other words, a ghetto racist black guy was walking across the street against a green light. The driver starts to go, and the ghetto racist black guy decides that it’s his street. So he runs down the driver screaming “You hit me”, the driver out of concern stops, and the ghetto racist black guy then commits a hate crime by beating the driver. It’s wonderful the system that the Republicans have created isn’t it?

Did anyone read anything about the race of either the driver or the group of “friends” in the article? Your racist views made you all think that this was a Black/White issue. Let’s suppose the driver was black and the “group” was white? I didn’t see not one person come to that conclusion and for that you all should be ashamed. As a worker in Downtown Dayton I see groups of white youths along with the groups of blacks, but it seems everyone is too busy watching the black groups while the white groups steal and spread graffiti all over downtown.

Did I miss the section of the article that gave the races of those involved in this incident? There’s nothing in this story to indicate the races of the driver, the pedestrian or the pedestrian’s friends. The pedestrian said he was “near” the corner - that sounds as though he wasn’t in the crosswalk. If that’s the case, he’s at fault. Jaywalking is common downtown and it isn’t restricted to any one race. Lack of courtesy and laziness cuts across racial lines.

How did race come into the picture? I thought the article was about a pedestrian getting hit, not the color of their skin. There is nothing more PATHETIC than a racist/prejudice person. Black or white. Keep your ignorant opinions to yourself. Oh yea, Obama’s mother is WHITE, so get the facts straight. He’s 50/50. Math helps!!!
