Hello. For those high compression jobs I use RB. Encoders beat transcoders in the compression arena every time. DVD5 is still noticably cheaper than DL, so I’ll stick to encoding to DVD5. I watch the movies on a 60" TV and the video quality looks good to me. Mr Pink may have something for those who don’t mind paying a bit more. It’s definitely a lot faster. ;)

Thief steals iPhone being used in GPS test, gets caught in 9 minutes

Horatio Toure, of San Francisco, stole an iPhone today off a woman walking down the street and was promptly arrested 9 minutes later.

Why so fast? Toure stole an iPhone that was being used to test software that tracks GPS location in real-time, allowing the company and the authorities to track Toure’s exact location everywhere he went.

The woman he stole the iPhone off of was Jordan Sturm, an assistant at Covia Labs, the company designing the software. Sturm was testing “Alert & Respond,” the app that allowed for real-time GPS tracking.

David Kahn, the CEO of the company, was following Sturm on a laptop, showing off the “Alert and Respond” software to his PR team. Because Toure was riding a bike when he stole the device, it appeared, in real-time, that Sturm had suddenly grown wings or wheels, leading to suspicions by Kahn.

The suspicions were confirmed when Sturm ran back to the office and informed her boss.

Besides tracking location in real-time, the software can also remotely turn on the phone’s camera and take a pic, or turn on the mic and record what is being said.

A few years ago I successfully completed a DVD Slieshow for playing on my conventional 21” TV. I am now re-doing the project for showing on my 40” LCD TV which has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Before starting I changed the resolution of all my images so that they were 1080 pixels high in the expectation that the images which appeared on the new TV wold be the right height and, just as important, high resolution. I burned the project (uncompleted) to a DVD to see what they would look like on the TV and found to my disappointment that, rather than being sharp, they were rather low resolution.

I have assumed that I should set the height to 1080. Is this correct? Is there something I should be doing to ensure I get reasonable resolution? cd creator

Is there any software that can read out subtitles from a file in an synth voice (ie MS Anna)?

Would be cool if the Haali media splitter had a “verbose subtitles to external application” function that sent the currently playing subtitle text to an application for reading.

If there isn’t is anyone willing to help develop such an application? video to zune converter

A retail establishment has the right to decide what it sells. A manufacturer has the right to decide what to make and sell. These TV stations have the right to decide what “product” to air. We have too much disposable income and time on our hands if all we have to complain about is the airing of the Osbornes. I doubt if people in third world nations, under dictatorships and in war zones feel our pain.

The people who are complaining about the station not broadcasting the show fall into two categories:

1) People who don’t even live within broadcast distance of the station and have no reason to complain and therefore don’t matter.

2) People who do live within broadcast distance of the station and apparently are out of touch with the values and culture of the community, and should therefore either move to one that is more to their liking or quit whining. Their opinions also don’t matter

NEWS FLASH— there are other people in this world, and sometimes, just sometimes, they’re going to get what they want, even if it seems (gasp) dorky to you.

I am 26 and I watched the first 10 minutes of the show. It was inappropriate for children and just a lame idea for a show. If you thought the Osbournes show on MTV was lame this is that times 100. Fox has some great shows and this show should be nowhere near their standards. I’d be VERY SUPRISED if this show made it to a second season. The Osbournes are not funny or interesting. I wish my local fox affiliates would follow Bill Lanesey’s lead.

I understand that the content of the show is NOT for a younger viewing audience. There are many shows that are inappropriate for kids that include partial nudity and violence of all kinds. Many shows start with a disclaimer of “discretion is advised”. It is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to make that choice.

By Ron in Cleveland

I think Fox made a bad decision to even make this lame show. To the non-parents making idiot remarks, I hope you learn someday that if kids think it’s a cool show, they will get up in the middle of the night just to see it, while you are asleep. It’s a good choice for the Fox station to not run it, it’s a bad decision to even make this toxic show. Another example of immoral Hollywood trying to negatively influence our children.

RE: Bruno

People with some morality are NOT what is wrong with America. People that think anything goes in a society are what is wrong with America and is becoming the downfall of this country. In addition as far as “blue language” is concerned- it is all anyone hears all day every day while we are out and about and earning a living, it would certainly be a nice change to not be inundated with it at home also without having to shut our TV off completely.Even if we use profanity on occasion some of us like to hear other types of grammar at times.

To all: This never ending rhetoric about parents monitoring their children and turning the channel is so asinine. Parents should not have to hover over the TV sets 24/7 because there is a proliferation of filth. What are people to view that don’t find this inane garbage entertaining? Liberals are not the only ones with rights in this country.

Also, as several have justly stated, it is a PRIVATE station. Now I understand that a lot of you seem to like the government making all the decisions but some of us still believe in free market enterprise. This is not censorship and thank you Fox!

By BR

April 1, 2009 3:22 PM | Link to this

The Fox network should step in and force the affiliates to run the show. It is censored. Personally the show is not my cup of tea, but the network needs the viewing audience to be there. Those who feel this strongly about show content should live in Salem, Mass. or just not watch. I don’t watch but the station affilitate has no valid reason for undermining the network programming effort. The ratings will take care of that show!

Good show, Fox!!! It’s about time some of the media outlets began implementing some responsible, common sense standards. The Osborne’s are a train wreak and at the very least vulgar and mind polluting. Putting the Osborne’s on after midnight offers a fair compromise and provides you the parent the opportunity to allow your children to watch this mess. Would you really let your children watch this? If so has it occurred to you that you are derelict in your duties as a parent? Seriously airing the Osborne’s has nothing to do with the First Amendment, get an education! I agree there is a lot of other programming that should be put on after midnight such as Family Guy. Ok everyone learn to use those recording devices.

I find there is a reason Osbourne child #3 is never photographed with them or is involved in their productions. She has good taste.

For those who say reality shows equal the end of TV, think again. Do you remember shows like “Whats My Line” or “Password” or “Candid Camera”? Those are considered reality shows. Reality shows have been around since the dawn of television. I didn’t watch the show last night but could have. My cable gets more than one Fox affiliate. I guess in other markets they realize that TV shouldn’t be a baby sitter and that most adults know how to use a remote control. Thanks Fox19 for look’in out for me…

IT WASN’T ‘CENSORED’! If an affiliate CHOOSES not to air programming, that is their perogative. It is not “censorship”, it’s a product choice. If a local grocery store decides not to sell a national brand of breakfast cereal then nothing is being “censored”.

I’m glad that a station finally decided they were tired of the filth and tripe commonly espoused as “entertainment” nowadays (more like mental masturbation).

Giving the Osbournes another show was a monetary move to say the least. To say that there is any entertainment quality being delivered by a family who believes their talents derives from filth, profanity, and dimwittedness, IS RIDICULOUS. In our consumer world, where there are still families out there that are wanting of the basic necessities, boycotting one more piece of trash is doing our minds, hearts and souls a big favor.P.S. Reality shows equal the END of entertainment.

This is NOT a hit on the 1st Ammendment. It is true that the 1st Ammendment gives you the right to say anything that you would like. It is not true that people have to listen and that you do not have to be held accountable for what you say.

This was a business decision to not air that episode. I assure you all that they would have received far more letters if they aired it then they did by not airing it.

Turn the page and spare me the righteous indignation.

To The Chef,

While I applaud the right of evey American to voice their opinion, if you are going to opine I’d suggest 1) Doing a little more homework on what is actually involved in running a business, 2)respect the right of private business to decide what is and isn’t right for their enterprise and 3) use puncutation. Your argument carries significantly more weight when properly articulated and far fewer people will dismiss it based solely on its lack of sophistication.

I watched the last five minutes of the show and agree with most. This will last about another month and then you will see re-runs of another show. My wife asked why is this on anyway. Well because of the name Osbournes. Just look at Ozie. Look what he did at the end of the show. That is a great add for not doing drugs. His wife had a show about charm(?) school. That was another waiste of air time. Kind of like an Obama press conference.

What I find interesting, when perusing “discussions” like these, is that the right-wingers’ arguments are reasonable, well-presented, and grammatically correct.

Left-wingers tend to seem rude and disjointed, and they can’t seem to present a reasonable argument.

TV is nothing but worthless bilge and drivel. Ozzy was once a great artist, especially when paired with Randy Rhoades but, since his wife pimped him on noMusic Television, I can’t stand him anymore. Oh, did I mention that TV is worthless? Reruns of classic TV are hard to come by even with satellite. News isn’t news because journalism is dead since it slanted so far to the left it completely fell into obscurity. The sitcom died with Seinfeld. Goodbye, TV.

If you don’t have the respect of your children enough such that they will listen you when you say, “It’s time for bed/homework/family hour/whatever, you need to turn off the television,” then you have failed as a parent. I was very upset at the decision not to air the Osbournes. I believe the first amendment really took a beating from them last night. I understand the need to make important decisions on what programming is ok to air at what times. Here’s my problem with the decision. First off, they show Family Guy, which I am sure is much more dirty, at earlier times than the Osbourne show. Plus, by removing it, you remove my ability to parent my child and tell him what he can or cannot watch. Shame on you all!

Thank you Fox 19. I think the reason TV chanels are forced to make this kind of decision is because so many people who have children are not parents at all. They have no sense of morality to teach their children and the children are not supposed to make grownup decisions. In a lot of homes the kids are smarter and more moral than their parents, as witnessed by some of these comments. Who would want to watch a show anyway where 75% of it is bleeped out? Doesn’t say much for your mentality.

Every television station is responsible by law for the content they air. The general manager is responsible if someone in the community decides to sue the station for indecency. Remember, since the Janet Jackson superbowl incident the fines for indecency were increased dramatically. Censorship is when the government dictates that something can’t be seen, heard, or read. This is just a general manager protecting his station.

Remember, a TV station using public airwaves must act in the public trust. If they feel this is not appropriate for a timeslot, they have a right to refuse it. It’s not censorship either - go read up on your broadcast law. Yes, it might be hypocritical based on other Fox shows, but the Osbournes are offensive as a family. They way they exploit themselves (and Ozzy, who is barely “with it”) is not funny. And if you teach in public schools, you know that parents aren’t always a good filter.

I saw the first minute (or less) when this aired in Albuquerque last night. In that time Sharon, the son and daughter all used curse words that were bleeped and little avatars were placed over their mouths. Apparently the family that cusses together stays together. So many kids today get into trouble by doing things unthinkable 20 - 30 years ago. It is obvious that many parents do not take responsibility for their kid’s actions. Garbage begets garbage. Values beget values.

Ok, so all of you idiots that applaud fox19, what do you think about them censoring news that they feel is innapropriate. What about not showing commercials from stores that are having sales or that advertise on another channel, is that ok? What if they decide to control everything you see based on what they want. Who cares about the Osbourne’s, there are bigger questions here that need to be answered. Fox19 thinks you are too stupid to change the channel, maybe you are!!

“By Annette April 1, 2009 9:31 AM I’m offended that you Holy people have the right to tell me at 48 years old what I can and cannot view… “

Dear Annette it’s not all about you, as you pointed out you are 48 years old and can decide for yourself what is appropriate to view.

Cincinnati’s Fox19 made this decision based on the time it was aired and the potential viewing audience as a whole which my dear includes people much younger then 48, how about 8 years old.

Good job Fox19!

I happened to be channel surfing with my 13 yr old daughter when we caught GM Bill Lanesey and his announcement. I couldn’t be prouder of this local station and it’s decision to watch out for our children by monitoring what they air. BIG FLIPPIN’ DEAL…it (Osbournes) was moved to midnight, at least someone is thinking of our children and their very impressionable minds even if your not!!!I seen a preview earlier in the week…PURE FILTH!! KUDOS FOX19!!! KUDOS!!!

I’m so glad I moved out of the fascist Cincinnati area. At least in Columbus apparently parents can actually parent their own kids and don’t need a TV station to do so. Unlike the idiot above who is pro-censorship, and wonders what Fox was thinking when he favors no one thinking for themselves anyway and he says it’s not funny, etc…HE DIDN’T AND COULDN’T WATCH IT! so how in the $%^$ (opps I offended some puritan) make a decision???? I thought the show was hilarious…

Way to go fox19, I really need help deciding what I should watch. Maybe you should censor everything that seems offensive, that way I don’t have to make up my mind at all! If you don’t want your kids to watch it, here’s an amazing idea…DON’T LET THEM WATCH IT! It’s not fox’s job to tell you what to watch, and if you think your precious children are somehow tainted by this show then you have much bigger problems.

How can anyone fault a station for not airing this program. It had to be terrible for it to be taken off. Do we not have enough 4 letter words and sex scenes on TV? Why cant we try to protect our children and young adults when there is too much for them on the computer and phones? I call it common decency when we try to have some morals in our families. May more stations take notice to the good fox did.

The people who are upset about this decision are absolute morons. They can still watch it online. You can still make your choice to watch this mind-dulling material.

Also, we are told all the time what we can and cannot view. Programming decisions are made every day which affect the content put before us. This is nothing new. The only reason this is controversial is because it’s a local station bucking the network.

IMO, this was a good decision by Fox19.

SO 19 refuses to air a show that 45 did run. Big deal, but don’t you think it is weird that the Fox station in FLA that did not run the show played a rerun of the Simpsons? It was just years ago that the Simpsons were the show all the nanny state people wanted banned!

For all of you who claim this is censorship, you need to learn what censorship is. This is a privatly owned TV Station and the owner has the right to choose what he/she airs. The fact that you could have watched it in a later time period proves that it is not censorship. Decisions are made everyday on what advertising is appropriate and what is not and they do not allow commercials that are in-appropriate. Is this censorship too? Wake up people, use your heads a little.

So, the liberals, who are usually short-sighted and hypocritical, are upset that a station chose not to air a program with little substance and one that would provide images, language, etc., to minors, while at the same time agree that the government has the right to censor a documentary on Hillary Clinton.

Hypocrites.

By R

April 1, 2009 9:54 AM | Link to this

I agree with the decision. It isn’t even about censoring since the show was allowed to air. It was a decision about scheduling, and it was the right move. Between shows like South Park, or any other expletive laden shows the station has the discretion to schedule it’s viewing accordingly. The same for not airing phone-sex ads during prime-time, or times when children/non-targeted markets would be exposed.

Viewers have the ability to switch channels, or use Hulu.com and Fancast.com.

To viewers in Cincinnati, you didn’t miss anything worthwhile. The show was AWFUL. Pure tripe. Juvenile humor at it’s worst. The wedding at the end was a joke. Not suspenseful in the least. You could tell it was rehearsed and not spontaneous. The Osbourne children were wooden, reading lines from a cue card obviously.

I think this is wonderful! I wish more people and networks would take a stand. At some point we have to say enough is enough. I am in my 40’s and started watching the show when it came on. Within the first 2 minutes I was hearing Beep outs because of the language. I turned the channel. Many children have televisions in their bedrooms now days. When you think a child is asleep, they are not. THANK YOU Fox 19 for caring enough for our children.

The one point some of you are forgetting here is that Fox 19’s license is granted by the Federal Communications Commission. If station management determined that something on the program could have been construed as “going too far” for that fairly early time slot, they are within their rights to refuse to air the show. The potential fines these days for airing “obscene, indecent or profane” programming are very steep. Thank you, Janet Jackson.

I think it is a little unnecessary that fox19 pulled the show because of its content because of the kids. Since when does a tv station should be taking place of parental supervision? Although, its their business and the can run it as they see fit. I enjoy the Osbornes. I find it basic entertainment. For those saying that this show is seen by unemployed-ignorant people, grow up and get over yourself. I work full-time, college educated and enjoy stupid shows. Its might right to do so after all.

I think all TV stations that are able to be viewed by anyone should take a look at their shows they air and the times they air them. When I was a kid that was important and even then HBO and CINEMAX did not show rated R and worse until after 8pm. I am a single mom and monitor what my kids watch on TV and the computer and their bedtime is 9pm. I feel shows that are intended for an older crowd should be pushed to a later time slot maybe then parents can have better control of their kids.

I am amazed that Fox19 actually made a decision such as this, with some of the ridiculous programming that is already shown on their station. I am glad to see that they have a “line” that was crossed with this show. The previews that were shown during American Idol were not something I think is worth the time watching. I, as another comment had stated, have a new found respect for Fox19.

Only the government can censor, Fox19 is a private company who is allowed to choose what they broadcast in order to satisfy the largest share of audience possible. They did that, I commend them. I wonder how many people who claim to be incensed by this action would totally support a FEDERAL law outlawing talk radio, hypocrites. You could watch the show at midnight via the internet…you were not censored. Get over it.

Here’s a clue, complain about the new forced ‘volunteer’ act, or the money the govt is pouring into private business, or the crappy govt healthcare you’ll get soon because you’d rather sit around and watch a 60 year old freak than pay attention to what is going on around you!

A) FOX 19 is a business owned by a person. They can and should put on whatever they want. It is called freedom. if you dont like the programming vote with your couch potato eyes and watch something else. Sheesh! b) What is wrong with you people that you will complaing about the oxbournes but not the bias in the news broadcasts. We are asleep at the wheel in the US.

I think a lot of what’s on television should be eliminated. I can’t believe the stuff they say and do these days. Even the commercials for shows are disturbing and they do it for the shock factor. In the middle of Idol you will see ads for Fringe, Look Me in the Eye (or whatever it’s called) and another one, maybe House. They all have these disturbing images. Shows are always going one step farther to up the ante and draw the phycho crowd. It’s bad for all of us.

To those who feel not airing the show at it’s normal time is unconstitutional, I think you’ve forgotten what the constitution is all about. The constitution limits the power of the government, not that of citizens or in this case, a private company. Besides that, the local Fox affiliate did not prohibit the show from being aired, they simply decided to air it at a later time than normal.

What’s the big deal ?

I think as adults we are fully capable of monitoring what our children view and if we don’t have control enough to tell our children to go to bed at a certain time or you can’t watch this then you have bigger problems, so let us decide what our children see and when they go to bed.

In St. Louis, the local station moved it back to 12:00. In these days of DVRs, I don’t know what difference that makes but I’d rather that then willy, nilly not show it. However our local ABC affiliate has been known to make changes to the schedule here and there to suit the ownership group’s biases. Drives me crazy frankly. But as another poster mentioned, I guess this means that Family Guy will stop being carried too….

I have the opinion that “Your rights end when they infrainge on my rights” Fox gained a lot of respect with me when they chose to not endanger childern by airing a show they knew was inappropriate. If concerned with violating your rights on this issue consider this. With today’s technology it is very simple to block and unblock what is viewed. Simply rate the program before it is aired and if you want the childern to watch it then press the unblock buttons. But not until YOU UNBLOCK IT!

Hey Jill - Didn’t God give you the will power to change the station or turn the TV off?

Travel to other countries and watch what they put on regular television at normal hours. It makes what we air look like Christian broadcasting. Yet those countries don’t have the number of school shootings, “sexting”, teenage pregnancies, etc. per populace that we do. Maybe we should let parents parent instead of corporations and law enforcement.

Congratulations Fox 19 for making a stand. As a teacher of 4th Grade students, many of my students are up past 9:30 without parental supervision. Many of the parents are working and leave older siblings in charge to monitor what is watched in the home. Not all children have the luxury to live in a 2 parent home where they are supervised and made to go to bed at a decent time. Those parents that do make sure that their children go to bed a decent time, Thank You!!!

Believe it or not there are a lot of 6 to 11 year olds still up at 9:30 (no parental supervision, tvs in their rooms etc.) I for one think that not airing the show was a bit harsh, they could have flip flopped the news for the show and given everyone a heads up that the material isnt suitable for young viewers so we are airing the show at a later time to give you time to put your kids to bed :)

Agreeing that others should decide what we can and can not see or read is, of course, exactly what “we” find appalling about authoritarian and undemocratic states and organizations. It’s OK for a corporation to make these decisions but not governments? I guess that is what some folks mean by mid-western common sense. I wish Fox would consider banning the obscenity of Glen Beck.

I agree with Jennifer’s post at 6:17 am… sort of. I really feel if FOX is going to air Family Guy (which my husband loves, but DVR’S for the kids sake)and other nonsense shows, then the Osbournes should have been aired. I personally don’t care if these shows never come back on, but some do. To make it better on both ends, why don’t you add something wholesome in the time slots where you have these shows, and then after the news, air these shows that some adults semmingly love. Controversy grab for a Fox programmer. Well played sir. Plus, we are in Cincinnati. This is a calculated risk that will likely return favorably in ad revenue. Censorship is censorship. If the network purchased the show and decided to air it, but this guy decided to “protect” the children in the Cincinnati area, then it is censorship, plain and clear. I’ll use my on/off switch to protect my kids, thanks.

As a father of five school-aged children, I completely support the decision to censor this show. It is absolutely inappropriate for the viewing audience in that time slot following American Idol.

As a fully evolved adult human being, I have to ask the question that I am sure most of the country is also asking….”What was Fox thinking with this crap”. It’s not even funny anymore. The level of dysfunction, the sad and pathetic attempts to stay in the public eye, the obvious cries for help.
