So what did YOU think of Spidey 3?

As expected, Spider-Man 3 swung over the tops of box-office records this weekend, raking in a record $148 million. (Can I have, oh, 1/40th of that, please?)

As any seasoned box office watcher will tell you, however, the opening weekend gross is never about the quality of the film but about how well it was sold and how much it was anticipated. Most everyone loves the Spidey series, so most everyone went to see it.

But was it worth it?

As I stated in my review on Friday, I thought the movie was solidly entertaining but had more than its fair share of story problems. Director Sam Raimi tried to outdo himself and lost control of the film.

According to what I’ve read on the web, my reaction was kind. Some people HATE it - although I hasten to add that the level of hatred might be exaggerated. Especially in the fanboy world, everything either RULES!!!! or SUCKS!!!! There’s no in-between.

So what about Spidey 4? My feeling is that Raimi really must move on now - his creativity on Spidey is clearly spent. And if that means an end to Spider-Man movies for now, well - perhaps it’s best that they quit while they’re slightly behind, before the series falls apart, like the Batman movies did.

If they must make a fourth movie, I have a suggestion for a director: Why not Martin Campbell? He’s not exactly an auteur, but as he proved with Casino Royale, he’s very good at directing both action and actors. The question remains as to whether Tobey Maguire and company will work for a new director.

What’s your take on Spider-Man 3? Was I too kind/not kind enough? Even if you haven’t seen the movie, should there be a Spider-Man 4, given the less than ecstatic reaction this time?

UPDATE: This item from the often questionable IMDB celebrity news page states that Sony is committed to making at least three more movies, but Raimi and Maguire are not confirmed for number 4. I’m sure the studio WANTS to make three more movies, but whether it actually will is another matter. I suppose if even the Hulk can get a second chance …

I saw this on Friday w/my husband. Both of us have enjoyed the previous Spidey movies. He is NOT a fanboy (or at 40, a fanman) but he truly hated the movie. I think it reached a little too far and there were some things that were a little hokey but overall, I enjoyed it for what it was (or will be) - a summer blockbuster.
