Good Day Hannibal Focker Sunshine!

So Teri Polo tells the AP that she’s on board to star in the third Fockers movie, to be titled “Meet the Little Focker” - no doubt a reference to her and Ben Stiller’s child.

No word on when the film will be released or if Barbra Streisand will be back. I’m assuming everyone else is on board. But I have to wonder: Is a third Fockers film really a great idea?

I suppose it’s a natural direction for the series to go, but it’s starting to feel like they’re making sequels, not because it’s a good idea, but because they’re sure money-makers. I liked “Meet the Fockers” when I saw it in the theater surrounding by people laughing hysterically, but I watched it again recently on one of its endless HBO repeats, and I thought, “Geez … it’s not THAT funny.” Would you see it?

Speaking of dubious upcoming projects, I picked on “Hannibal Rising” already, but considering it’s almost upon us (Feb. 9), now seems like a good time to kick it around some more. I liked “Hannibal” and “Red Dragon” better than most critics, but without Anthony Hopkins, what’s the point? It’s telling how the trailer shows very little footage from the actual movie. Producer Dino De Laurentiss says he wants to do more movies about young Hannibal, but I don’t think he’ll get the chance. In terms of box office, MGM’s gonna get their head handed to them, after a fashion.

Personally, I think it would be more interesting if maybe you put Hannibal and the Fockers together. The title? “Eat the Fockers.” (Ducks in anticipation of the throwing of vegetables).

There IS something to look forward to in the next few weeks however. Check out the very cool trailer for “Sunshine,” the new sci-fi thriller from Danny Boyle, who gave us “28 Days Later.” Aside from the overly familiar use of the “Requiem for a Dream” music, I’m sold. It hopefully brightens the multiplexes on March 16.

What are you all looking forward to, movie-wise?

I’m looking forward to “Eat The Fockers”, of course.
