Cut Lindsay Lohan a break already
So I get excused from jury duty only to find that Lindsay Lohan has checked into rehab.
I can already hear the snarky comments: “Really? Don’t stop the presses”; and the like. But critic Joe Leydon has written a rather sharply-worded defense of her on his blog.
And you know what? I agree with him.
Yes, it’s very easy to pick on “La Lohan” as she is called - at least, that’s one of the more polite names for her. But with all the supermarket headlines out there, people don’t tend to notice that Lohan actually can act.
Don’t believe me? Go back and look at her work in “Mean Girls.” Rachel McAdams wasn’t the only one making a name for herself in that movie. Lohan was the lead and she carried the film, which was a good-sized hit.
Then there’s the remake of “Freaky Friday,” in which I thought Lohan gave an Oscar-quality performance playing a girl whose mother’s mind was in her body.
You heard me. I said Oscar quality. No, I didn’t expect her to get a nomination, even though her co-star, Jamie Lee Curtis, was considered a possibility, but I thought Lohan absolutely matched her.
Heck, I liked her all the way back in 1997 when she played a set of twins in Disney’s remake of “The Parent Trap.” She played those roles so well, you could always tell which twin was which, even when one was pretending to be the other. That’s no mean feat, to coin a phrase.
I mean, you must be doing something right when Robert Altman casts you in one of his movies, “A Prairie Home Companion.” Granted, the late, great director’s judgment wasn’t infallible - he cast Tara Reid in one of his less beloved films,’Dr. T. and the Women’ But Tara Reid didn’t have to play opposite Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin.
Sure, Lohan brought a lot of her troubles on herself, primarily by hanging out or feuding with people who are a lot less talented than she is, such as Paris Hilton and the aforementioned Ms. Reid. But I’ll bet that no matter how strung out Lohan gets, you won’t catch her in a Uwe Boll film.
So I for one (or maybe two, since Joe Leydon is on my side) wish Lohan well and hope people give her a break. After all, calling somebody stupid doesn’t make you smarter.

Wow, this article was succesful at reminding me that Lindsay is actualy talented. With all the negative press she has been getting, it’s easy for one to forget her great acting skills. Hopefully she will come out of rehab making better choices.By Joe Leydon

Of course, if she DOES pop up in a Uwe Boll film, I suppose we’ll have to assume that the rehab didn’t take.By SRCputt

I also hope she chooses some better projects. Prairie Home Companion was a step forward, Just My Luck was a step back. She does have legitimate talent and I am rooting for her.
