My Golden Globes predictions
The Golden Globe Awards air this evening on NBC, so guess what folks, it’s predictions time! I will reserve “Should win” choices for the Oscars, so as not to be too repetitive. This is all about who WILL win tonight.
DRAMA
Babel
Bobby
The Departed
Little Children
The Queen
I think this is pretty clearly “The Departed’s” to lose; it energizes most everyone who sees it. “Babel” could upset, but it has many more detractors than “The Departed” does.
ACTRESS (DRAMA)
Penelope Cruz - Volver
Judi Dench - Notes on a Scandal
Maggie Gyllenhall - Sherrybaby
Helen Mirren - The Queen
Kate Winslet - Little Children
Mirren in a walk. She’s won just about everything else.
ACTOR (DRAMA)
Leonardo DiCaprio - Blood Diamond
Leonardo DiCaprio - The Departed
Peter O’Toole - Venus
Will Smith - The Pursuit of Happyness
Forest Whitaker - The Last King of Scotland
The Globes, being star-crazy, might go for DiCaprio, but I’m going to make my upset pick here, guess that Leo will split his vote, allowing the acclaimed Whitaker to win. Besides, I’m guessing members of the Hollywood FOREIGN press remember Idi Amin all too well.
MUSICAL OR COMEDY
Borat
The Devil Wears Prada
Dreamgirls
Little Miss Sunshine
Thank You For Smoking
A close call between “Sunshine” and “Dreamgirls,”but with “Dreamgirls”having more nominations, I say it wins.
ACTRESS (MUSICAL OR COMEDY)
Annette Bening - Running with Scissors
Toni Collette - Little Miss Sunshine
Beyonce Knowles - Dreamgirls
Meryl Streep - The Devil Wears Prada
Rene Zellweger - Miss Potter
Streep in a walk. Lead actresses are easy to call this year.
ACTOR (MUSICAL OR COMEDY)
Sacha Baron Cohen - Borat
Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Aaron Eckhart - Thank You for Smoking
Chiwetel Ejiofor - Kinky Boots
Will Ferrell - Stranger Than Fiction
Cohen, I mean uh, Borat. None of the other nominees has built up much of a head of steam. Although Depp has never won here, so you never know ….
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Adriana Barraza - Babel
Cate Blanchett - Notes on a Scandal
Emily Blunt - The Devil Wears Prada
Jennifer Hudson - Dreamgirls
Rinko Kikuchi - Babel
With Hudson getting literal and figurative applause everywhere, I don’t see how she loses.
SUPPORTING ACTOR
Ben Affleck - Hollywoodland
Jack Nicholson - The Departed
Eddie Murphy - Dreamgirls
Brad Pitt - Babel
Mark Wahlberg - The Departed
Something of a tough call. They love Jack, and Pitt’s a former winner too, but I’m guessing Murphy’s comeback story will resonate the most.
DIRECTOR
Clint Eastwood - Flags of Our Fathers
Clint Eastwood - Letters from Iwo Jima
Stephen Frears - The Queen
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu - Babel
Martin Scorsese - The Departed
Scorsese is riding a wave of acclaim saying he’s one of his best films in years, so he wins.
FOREIGN-LANGUAGE FILM
Apocalypto
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Lives of Others
Pan’s Labyrinth
Volver
A few weeks ago I would have said “Letters from Iwo Jima,” but with that film’s momentum fading fast, I’m going to go for “Pan’s Labyrinth,” which seems to have built up the most buzz.
ANIMATED FILM
Cars
Happy Feet
Monster House
The fact that “Happy Feet” is an Aussie production with international themes will go over well with this crowd.
SCREENPLAY
Babel
Little Children
Notes on a Scandal
The Departed
The Queen
Here’s where they toss “Babel” some recognition, since it IS the most nominated film.
ORIGINAL SCORE
The Painted Veil
The Fountain
Babel
Nomad
The Da Vinci Code
In a very bizarre list (“The Da Vinci Code?” Really??) Babel should win, having been composed by last year’s winner, Gustavo Santaolalla, who wrote the “Brokeback Mountain”score.
ORIGINAL SONG
A Father’s Way - Pursuit of Happyness
Listen - Dreamgirls
Never Gonna Break My Faith - Bobby
Song of the Heart - Happy Feet
Try Not To Remember - Home Of The Brave
Another strange list, but I predict the new “Dreamgirls” tune prevails here. Again, star power (in the form of nominee Beyonce) always helps.
Now you tell me who you think will win - or for that matter, who deserves to.

These guys gave Clint Best Director for “Bird”, so I think they’ll give him foreign language for Iwo Jima.
