Those crazy People’s Choice Awards!

Let it be known henceforth that I am a film awards show junkie, and you will see me blogging a TON about the Oscars and other prizes as they come in. I love ALL that stuff, from the Globes to the awards for best editor to, of course, the Golden Razzies.

I love them all, except for the People’s Choice Awards, whose newest list of nominees sinks them further into irrelevance, if that’s possible. Hey. I don’t expect “United 93” or “The Queen” among the nominees, but some of these choices are just baffling.

Here’s the rundown of their movie choices, with my commentary:

Female Movie Star

Jennifer Aniston: Although “The Break-Up” did better than I expected, I’m still not convinced Jennifer is a movie star.

Halle Berry: Uh, for what? “X-Men: The Last Stand”? In which she didn’t do all that much? If people are gonna vote for an actress in an action movie, Keira Knightley would be a MUCH better choice.

Sandra Bullock: She had an OK hit with “The Lake House,” but this feels like a “Julia isn’t active right now so let’s write down Sandy” nomination. Sorry, Sandy.

My vote: By default, Sandy. (There, does that make up for my analysis?)

Male Movie Star

Johnny Depp: Understandable. He was in the biggest hit of the year. No complaints.

Tom Hanks: Look, I love Tom as much as the next guy, but not for his uncommonly leaden work in “The Da Vinci Code.”

Denzel Washington: “Inside Man” is still one of the 10 best movies of the year, so that works.

My vote: Johnny’s great, but he did nothing new in the “Pirates” sequel. Denzel’s an easy choice.

Leading Lady

Cameron Diaz: If this were last year when she made the criminally underseen “In Her Shoes,” absolutely. But her only movie this year is “The Holiday,” and that’s not out until December. This smacks of a “Quick, think of a babe” pick.

Kirsten Dunst: I really like Kirsten and thought she was pretty good in “Marie Antoinette,” but not that good.

Scarlett Johansson: If this award is for acting in the most movies, this is Scarlett’s easy, but her best work this year was in “The Prestige.”

My vote: Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a … oh, you can guess from there.

Leading Man

Matt Damon: Fine choice. I actually liked his work in “The Departed” a little better than DiCaprio’s.

Brad Pitt: Dunno, I haven’t seen “Babel” yet. I’ll let you know Friday.

Vince Vaughn: Vince is cool, but I wasn’t a “Break-Up” fan.

My vote: For now, Damon.

Female Action Star

Kate Beckinsale: Hey, I love Kate in tight leather, but not even that was good enough to recommend “Underworld: Evolution.” And I LIKED the first movie!

Halle Berry: Again, over Keira?? Or Famke Janssen, even?

Uma Thurman: For “My Super-Ex Girlfriend?” She tried, but this nomination is funnier than that movie!

My vote: None of the above! I write in Keira.

Male Action Star

Johnny Depp: See above.

Samuel L. Jackson: Sam made “Snakes on a Plane” watchable, so I gotta give him props, even if the movie as a whole was underwhelmng.

Jet Li: They want to give him a retirement gift?

My vote: Depp by default.

On-Screen Matchup

Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn in The Break-Up: Not again …

Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Leonardo DiCaprio in The Departed: I’m ALL OVER that. “The Departed” is my second favorite movie of the year.

Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest: Hey, there’s Keira! But since “The Departed” is in this group, sorry, no.

My vote: Jack in a box with Leo and Matt.

You can vote for your choices here. While you’re at it, tell me what you think of these picks. Does anyone actually watch The People’s Choice Awards anymore?

“Does anyone actually watch The People’s Choice Awards anymore?” For that to be true, I would have to have watched them in the first place. The People’s Choice Awards seem to exist solely to give The Golden Globes credibility.

But it’s so much fun to see everyone all dressed up and spiffy!
