Emma Watson: Looking for her invisibility cloak?
Newsweek and some other entertainment blogs have made a big to-do about Emma Watson, AKA Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, supposedly feeling iffy about playing Harry’s brainy gal pal a sixth time.
She and her cohorts are wrapping “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” due for release in July, but Newsweek quotes Watson as being unsure she would return.
“I don’t know yet … every film is such a huge production, and it’s a long time,” she says.
Thing is, this isn’t exactly news. As Newsweek admits waaaaay down in the story, Watson has gone through this same song and dance for films 3, 4, and 5. She must be feeling particularly itchy given that she’s much like Hermione in real life: she just aced her national exams, indicating that she’s good at more than acting.
If Watson did decide to leave, that would be a major loss. Ever since the first film, I pegged her as the standout among the three kids. Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint have improved too, but Watson has the best potential for a non-Potter career. She radiates intelligence and charm, very well capturing Hermione’s gradual blooming.
Granted, the series has survived a major recasting before, when Richard Harris died and Michael Gambon very ably filled his role as Dumbledore. But since we’ve watched the kids grow up, replacing any one of them would be about as difficult as making Professor Snape crack a smile.
Do you think Watson will stay on? If she or any of the other kids left, would it severely hurt the series?
