Bronson Arroyo: Sesenta y Uno
While thousands and thousands of Chicago Cubs fans found their way easily to Great American Ball Park, Cubs manager Lou Piniella had a near Gilligan’s Island type trip.
What figured to be a five-hour trip by car from Chicago to Cincinnati Saturday turned into an eight-hour tour of Ohio because Piniella and the driver, first base coach Matt Sinatro, got lost and had a See Ohio trip.
It was apropos. Piniella’s team has completely lost its way, losing to the Cincinnati Reds 10-2, the Cubs’ sixth straight loss.
Jay Bruce hit his first career grand slam and drove while Bronson Arroyo won his 14th game, 10th in his last 13 decisions.
And Arroyo, tearing a page from Chad Johnson — nee Ocho Cinco — unveiled his new name, which was on his back after the game: Sesenta y uno (61).
Before he did an interview, he laughingly said he wouldn’t answer to any other name and he had a right to do it, “Because my father is Cuban and I am Hispanic so I can do it for real.”
Arroyo said the idea came to him after watching TV all day, “And I’m at home watching that and I’m just dying. I said, ‘Man, he’s on every freaking talk show in America.”
Piniella’s mind is more cluttered over the barrage of losses and his errant automobile excursion was supposed to be therapeutic.
“I wanted to get my mind off baseball and I certainly did that,” said Piniella. “I was sleeping when we got lost and I probably shouldn’t have slept.”
His team is sleeping, too, and shouldn’t be, not with the Milwaukee Brewers yapping at its feet.
MapQuest sent Piniella and Sinatro across Interstate 80-90 and they should have turned south on I75 near Toledo, but breezed on past. MapQuest had them zeroed in on East Liverpool, near the Pennsylvania border.
“I lived in Ohio three years and never heard of East Liverpool, so I knew something was wrong,” said Piniella. They purchased a good old-fashioned road map and threaded their way down two-lane highways, “With lots of trucks,” until they found I-71 in Columbus.
Piniella and his starting pitcher, Ted Lilly, felt as if they were run over by an 18-wheeler not long after the game commenced.
Joey Votto hit a two-run homer with two outs in the first, his 18th homer, and drove in three runs, the Reds scored three on two hits in the second, then Bruce unloaded his 16th homer, a grand slam, in the fourth.
“That’s the first grand slam in my whole life,” said Bruce. “Never hit one. Ever. It’s a pretty good feeling. I’ve had a lot of firsts this year. It’s always fun to beat the Cubs. You get a little more in your tank when they come to town and you have all the Cub fans here. You notice the difference, so I have a good time doing it and I want to beat them every time.”
When Arroyo struck out the side on 10 pitches to start the game, it portended good things and they materialized as he gave up one run and four hits while walking two and striking out six for his 6 1/3 innings.
None of Chicago’s first three hits left the infield, but Arroyo walked Jim Edmonds to start the seventh and catcher Koyie Hill doubled him home. After Arroyo retired Kosuke Fukodome on his 122nd pitch, manager Dusty Baker came to get him.
“It’s nice to get some runs early against Lilly because he has always pitched tough against teams I played for,” said Arroyo.
And of striking out the side in the first on 10 pitches, he said, “There was some good energy in the crowd tonight and I pained some pitches that caught them off guard, as far as my pitch selection. And that set a good tone.”
Manager Dusty Baker, of course, loves beating his old team, especially with so much at stake for the Cubs.
“Arroyo is really on his game, has been on his game,” said Baker. “That was awesome the way he started. He really had it clicking. That’s a dynamic offensive team over there and Bruce’s grand slam gave us a lot of breathing room.”
Votto and Bruce both homered and both doubled and both scored two runs and Baker is thrilled with his two rookies.
“That’s a wonderful thing right there, especially when the guys get on ahead of them and they’ve been playing very well,” said Baker.
“That was a good one to win right there with all the Cubs fan here,” Baker added. “You want to take those fans out of the game early so they don’t excite their team. We did it early. It is fun to play this kind of series.”

I’ve been reading this blog most of the season and have commented a handful of times. The nonsense that has taken place on this particular thread is a perfect example of the behavior Hal was chastising last week. He threatened to shut down the blog if things didn’t change. It looks like they have not. Personally, I like this blog. I like the behind-the-scenes stories about travel mishaps, conversations with people McCoy meets on the road, thoughts he has about the Reds that he throws out to spark discussion. It would be a shame if he shut it down, but I wouldn’t blame him. The problem comes down to a few numbskulls that, for whatever reason, feel a need try to make discussions with others on the blog personal. I have no idea why some people find this enjoyable, but some apparently do. Matt, you were singled out because you are probably the worst offender. You have no reason to complain…McCoy was dead on. Your posts serve no other purpose than to belittle others. If you really find this enjoyable, then please find another venue. I would suggest that a few others do the same. If this post offends you then you are likely part of the problem. Maturity is measured by behavior, not age.By BrarHopper

James, I could care less what you think or have to say about me. I’ll lose no sleep over it. I’m never wrong? It seems like it’s you and your friends Wizard and Brarhopper who are never wrong. Your never wrong about how Dusty Baker, a man with 1,225 career wins is the most horrible manager of all time. Your never wrong about how this team is seemingly decades away from winning. It is simply a patented lie to say that I critique and answer to every single post on this blog. It’s nonsense and completely untrue, and you know it. It is you, Wizard and Brarhopper who are bad for this blog. It is you three who constantly critique MY posts and come after me. Well DUH Matt! You finally hit the nail on the head. The reason you haven’t heard Chris Welch “scream” or criticize Baker and his decisions and Reds lack of hustle and boneheaded plays and playing Bakers old friends is quite simple. Same reason you just don’t get it on this blog. You simply don’t listen. You little magnifying mind already has all the answers. You have it all figured out. Already know it all. You, more than any other blogger, represent that old “contempt prior to investigation.” Hell Matt, you are just never wrong. But yet that’s not enough for you. Well Wizard I know how much my posts seem to offend you and James Bradley, and I don’t know what to say except if you don’t like what I have to say don’t read it. I’ve never heard Welsh “scream” anything on TV. Yes, he is critical of Dusty Baker from time to time. He was also critical from time to time with every other Reds manager in Welsh’s tenure as broadcaster! That’s part of his job as the “color” guy on the TV. George Grande or Thom Brennaman does the play-by-play and Welsh sort of analyzes the game and offers his commentary of everything from manager strategy to how the pitcher on the mound is feeling. It isn’t like Chris Welsh being critical of the manager is breaking news or something never heard of before.By AP=FLORIDA-nee OHIO

September 6, 2008 10:56 PM | Link to this
Nice reverse psychology, Brarhopper. Aren’t you a little smartie? Anyway, back to intelligent conversation now. Shockmonkey, Chris Welsh doesn’t sit and bash Dusty Baker during the game. Now once in a while I do hear him get a little bit critical of a move Baker makes, but the way your post reads, a person who knew nothing about the Reds and had never watched a game on TV would think that Welsh ripped Baker up and down for every move he makes as manager. It doesn’t seem to me that you are right in that assessment. With 1,225 career victories which puts him 35th on the all-time list of most managerial wins, I don’t think Baker needs us, Chris Welsh or anyone else to tell him how to manage. Sometimes Baker is right in his managerial decisions and sometimes he’s not. You and others on this blog who constantly berate and criticize Dusty Baker protest too much I believe. While he’s not perfect, he is the best manager this team has had in years. It could be worse, we could have Jerry Narron back in the Reds dugout blowing games.By BrarHopper

I for one am hopeful WJ and BC cut the difficult but necessary check to let Dusty walk. He’s awful. I beg to differ with Mr. BB with the proper use of the French word “nee.” Née or nee, originally a French word meaning “born,” was used to indicate the name at birth of a married woman who has since changed her name. In English usage, however, née or nee is usually followed only by a family name. The word has been used since 1758, though now it is usually restricted to society columns and obituaries. Since this term now usually sounds outdated or affected, you may want to avoid it outside of these contexts. Finding substitutes, such as born or formerly known as, is easy enough. Now, with Hal writing in an informal context in an online blog to use the word “nee” to mean “born” even if it has a masculin reference, is NOT a stretch given the outdated usage and colloquial context anyway. Chad Johnson is now “born” (nee - consider it a “rebirth” or born again) as Chad 85 - excuse my english usage or Chad Johnson - nee 85. The formal, French usage has long been bastardized by English speaking people to mean what it means in context, i.e., it is no longer formal….so have fun with its usage.By Matt

Mr. Baseball is certain that Mr. McCoy took his grammatical correction in the spirit it was offered. Writers as good as Mr. McCoy strive for perfection and he lays it on the line every day in his columns. But even Hall of Fame writers, like Hall of Fame ballplayers, occasionally make mistakes. The correction offered really has nothing to do with Mr. McCoy’s visual impairment, of which Mr. Baseball is aware, but was likely an error made in haste. No harm intended.By HuberTucky

Y-City Jim, good question? Could the answer involve alcohol? I mean, c’mon. How does one mapquest Chicago to Cincinnati and end up on the Ohio Turnpike AT ALL, let alone Toledo and East Liverpool? Unless one did an ooops and requested one of those other big Ohio cities that starts with “C” -like Cleveland! They turned a 300 mile drive into a 700 mile trek! Bronson Arroyo is exactly the kind of pitcher the Reds need. He is a seasoned veteran who knows how to play the game, and it shows. His veteran stability and leadership (by example) in the rotation has been great for the Reds, and I hope he is around here for a few more years, hopefully the rest of his career. He might be a slow starter (as evidenced this year), but when it’s July, August and September, which are the critical months of the year, you can depend on him. I think that’s fantastic. You know, as disappointing as this season has been, the Reds have two starting pitchers who are going for big years. Arroyo will probably win between 15 and 17 games, and Volquez may still win 20. Good stuff.By ShockMonkey

Per Mr. Baseball: maybe a tad condescending but definitely good knowledge. Proper English is such a lost art nowadays. We are the Knights Who Say “Nee.” Now about those Reds and Dusty Baker’s propensity to use CP and Bako….By Mike-Cinci

Arroyo has pitched great the last couple of months. Very impressive. He seems to have a rubber arm. He may end up being another Jamie Moyer and pitch into his forties. Votto is proving he belongs. I like Dickerson a lot. He is fast, good defensively, knows the strike zone, and seems to have a quick bat. I hope he proves to be the real deal. Unfortunately we will probably not know until next year when he has a chance to play a full season in the majors. Unless he “goes south” over the next 3 weeks I’d pencil him into LF or CF and concentrate on finding a right hand hitting outfielder. The Reds have to gamble on some young players as over paying veteran middle of the road free agents never seems to work. Walt Jocketty has his work cut out for him.By Wizard

Piniella got lost driving to Cincinnati! LOL Does anyone envy Matt Sinatro? I have this visual from Smokey and the Bandit where Piniella is Jackie Gleason’s character and Sinatro is the son who takes all kinds of abuse.By Kevin

Agree with C’sLB, but would take it further to say the self appointed Mr B is a bore who is quite full of himself. Aslo, remember, Mr. B that this is a blog and no proofers look it over, and also please keep in mind that Mr. McCoy has a vision disorder. I, too, am partially sighted, and do not like your criticism of him on this petty item.By Carl's Little Brother

Mr. Baseball tremors to think that he would dare correct Hal McCoy’s writing, but Hal,you misused the word “nee” in the following sentence: “And Arroyo, tearing a page from Chad Johnson — nee Ocho Cinco — unveiled his new name, which was on his back after the game: Sesenta y uno (61).” “Nee” comes from the French and is the feminine past participle of “naitre”, which means “to be born”. “Nee” is typically used for a married woman to refer to her maiden name, that is, the name she was born with. In a secondary meaning, “nee” can mean “formerly known as.” Neither of these definitions works in the sentence referring to Mr. Ocho Cinco. The sentence could be reconstructed to say “Chad Ocho Cinco, nee Chad Johnson …” and it would be acceptable. Now, with that distraction out of the way, Mr. Baseball can go back to pondering the plight of the lowly Reds team.
