Dunn dealt to Diamondbacks

And now it is a full-fledged purge. First Ken Griffey Jr., now Adam Dunn.

The Cincinnati Reds traded their power-hitting left fielder this afternoon to the Arizona Diamondbacks for three prospects — Class A pitcher Dallas Buck and two players to be named later.

It is not a shock. Not even stunning.

The Reds were faced with trying to sign Dunn to a long-term contract before the season ended — and general manager Walt Jocketty does not do contracts during the season — or face losing him to free agency.

Dunn has made recent comments that while he would have liked to stay in Cincinnati, he also was looking forward to testing the free-agent market. If the Reds had lost Dunn to free agency, they would have received two first-round picks from the signing team as compensation.

Is what the Reds get now better than two first-round picks? That remains to be seen.

Dunn is tied for the major-league lead in home runs with 32, but has been in one of his batting funks lately - no home runs since Griffey was traded 10 games ago, during which time the Reds were 1-9.

They have lost 14 of their last 16 and are buried in the National League Central basement, so Jocketty obviously has determined it is time to remake the Reds in his image.

For Dunn, the Reds receive pitcher Dallas Buck and two players to be named later.

Buck spilled the beans on the trade shortly after he received a call from Arizona farm director A.J. Hinch, telling him he had been traded for Dunn. Buck was traveling with the Class A Visalia Oaks and was on a bus to San Jose, Calif., when Hinch called him and he told teammates of the trade en route.

“It was kind of funny,” Buck told ESPN, “because I was rumored to be in a deal for [Mark] Teixeira, so when I just told them they all thought I was messing with them.”

Buck, 24, was 1-4 with a 3.94 ERA in nine games and eight starts with Class A South Bend. He was promoted to High Class A Visalia and made one appearance, pitching five shutout innings Thursday against San Jose. He will be assigned to Class A Sarasota.

Buck was selected by Arizona in the third round of the 2006 first-year player draft. He attended Oregon State University, where he was a member of the 2006 NCAA national championship team. He made his professional debut last season by going 4-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 16 starts with Visalia.

Dunn batted .233 with 32 home runs and 74 RBIs in 114 games this year with the Reds. The Reds have not announced who will replace Dunn on the 25-man roster.

Jocketty was on his way to the Dominican Republic immediately after the trade and could not be reached for comment.

WAtching the DBacks @ COL tonight on the MLB package a commentator produced the best stat to justify getting rid of Adam Dunn, He strikes out 49% of the time!! also he is expecting a new contract worth 125mil!!! good move Walt Jocketty!!!

I don’t get the trade at all. Why get rid of a guy who hits 40 homeruns, drives in 100 runs, and has an obp of around .350. Sure he wasn’t the best outfielder but he wasn’t the worst. I just don’t know how they can replace that power and run production.

Tomas hit the nail on the head, Meaning less homeruns, and untimely errors. Dunn is a one tool player. I would take an average 5 tool player over Dunn anyday. Defense wins Championships.

This move was long overdue. Dunn only hit with the bases empty and/or when they were way ahead or way behind. He also moved like a lumbering ox in left field so maybe now we’ll get someone who can catch up to the fly balls out there. Now the D-backs fans will have the consternation.

Oh ya, and I was so thankful we didn’t get Dunn or Griffey and that they made no effort to get them. They are dead weight and we don’t need them. Our team is solid through and through and the chemistry is priceless. Go to a game at Wrigley someday, even my Reds fan brother says there is no baseball as fun as Wrigley.

I’d expect no better a come back from you, BIRDIE. The Cubs may not finish strong, but we’ve had much more of an exciting year to watch than most teams and that’s ok in our book. See, that’s why Cub fans are loyal through thick and thin. Even if we were in dead last with no hope, we would fill the stands and support our team.

Yes, Dunn gave 40 homers and 100 RBIs each year, but he had 4X the strike outs as homers and he was a horrible defensive liability in left field. He gave up more runs on errors than he produced. You need to build a team around a leader, neither Dunn nor Jr. were leaders. It’s a joke that everyone talks about him going to a 1st place team. Arizona is 2 games over .500 and doesn’t deserve to be in the playoff race. No one from the West should be in the playoffs. Go Cubs!

If you know so little about MLB that you honestly think they should have kept Dunn because he sells tickets and is fun to watch, please root for another team. I prefer a winning team over marquee players and these “marquee” players had eight years to win and didn’t.

Well they have definitely cut cost with the 2 trades. They have also unknowingly reduced the amount of fireworks they will need to purchase as they no longer have anyone who could he a home run even if they were standing on second base to hit it.

This trade really “grind my gears.” I’m so sick of the Reds making bad choices. I agreed with the Griffey trade, but this was an awful moves. Dunn was productive and has improved in the outfield. I’m putting the Reds on the backburner for the rest of the season. I agree with Cait, if the Reds move Javier Valentine, after 25 years i’ll find another team. Dusty needs to play him more because i think our lineup is much stronger when he’s in.

Kinda understood why we traded Jr, but Adam Dunn for nothing? At least we would have received some draft picks if we lost him to free agency. Always been a Dunn fan, ever since he was with the Dragons. People loved to pick on Dunn, the strikeouts and fielding, but you had to admit he was fun to watch. He could knock it out of the ballpark at any time and he PLAYED EVERYDAY, kinda rare these days. I will miss him for sure. Even with all the losing, I looked at the Reds box score everyday, just to see if he knocked another one out. Now why bother???? Gonna be hard to watch this team on TV, let alone go down to the ballpark.

Having self-destructed on the field, the Deds…uh…Reds are now self-destructing in the locker room. Griffey, Dunn and Ross? That’s like the Yankees sacking Deter, A-Rod and Rivera. How much longer before the crowds start staying away in droves?

Dunn was the Dave Kingman of the Reds. When you needed a single, he was not the guy you wanted at the plate. To me that’s the difference between the top cleanup guys (Ramirez, Lee, etc) and pretenders like Dunn. There’s a reason teams did not want Dunn. You can come to your own conclusion on that.

Weren’t winning with Griffey or Dunn.(Looks like damaged goods in trade for Dunn though). Why not unload those big salaries and build from there? Need to unload Majewski also. Ineffective pitcher. No better than Stanton was.Need to find out whats wrong with Harang.Find a catcher who can hit. None of the current catchers are good hitters.Glad to see Ross gone. Never could hit when needed.Bako to follow. Need to start playing the small ball -singles/doubles game now.Actually need to put together more than two hits in a row. That would be a nice change. No power hitters left on the team. Forget the single home run game and start generating runs with base hits/smart base running/speed.

Let’s face it folks, only one team in five (or possibly two if you count the wild card) from our division makes it to the playoffs each year, so why do fans even bother to go to games once the race is over? They go to watch their favorite players to perhaps do something special at the game (like hit a home run or break Sammy Sosa’s HR record and become 5th all time). I’m really disappointed and will tune out the Red’s for the rest of this year. Hey, the Bengals are winning 20 to 10 on Preseason Monday Night Football right now! See ya Red’s.

DanR is exactly right. The money lost in lower attendance will be well over the 4 million owed to JR and 2 draft picks will sure be better than an injured pitcher and 2 others of even less value that is being received for Dunn.

Terrible Move by Jock I think these 2 moves of getting rid of Griffey and Dunn is a way to make Dusty happy so that he can play his all time favorite ballplayer(?) Corey Patterson every day in the outfield so that he might accidently be able to get his average down to the .100 mark.I finally heard Krivsky(on WLW today) say that the signing of Patterson was all Dusty’s idea which everyone surely knew all along. So now how to we get rid of Dusty & Corey? If Dunn was only worth an injured pitcher what could we get for them, maybe a few broken bats? Bob Castellini has and will continue to ruin this team and the city of Cincinnati!!!!

When you don’t have a winning team, what brings fans to the ballpark? Is it the $6.50 beers or $8.50 hamburgers and fries? I think not. What the fans go to see are their favorite players/superstars. I would still go to a game this season to watch Griffy on his quest to be on of histories greatest home run hitters or Dunn in his quest for the 2008 home run title. I believe that the lost revenue to the team for the remainder of the season will be greater than the $4 million buyout of Griffey’s contract. We could have kept Dunn around until the end, put fans in the seats, and ended up with two first round draft picks when he left. Think about prior games this season and the jerseys that you saw in the greatest numbers in the stands. It was Griffey and Dunn with a few Phillips and Arroyo’s sprinkled in. I don’t think current management gets it!

135,000 intrepid fans came to the games last week. An average of about 25,500 a game. They saw thier beloved Reds team go 1-6, lose thier 6th straight, go 19 1/2 games out and last place. They drove hours to get to the game to get pink hats, a T shirt and spend lots of money. When the game is over they have to drive hours back home. It will be interesting to see how many attend the Reds/Cardinals on August 15th when they come home. I wouldn’t be at all surprised 25,000 show up, because they will tell you it’s all for the “game experience”. Mr. J is making moves, Mr. C says we will win next year. But for now, just bring patience and lots of your money!!

Dunn is gone, on a Dunn deal. Not a good one, either - Nice going, Management. I guarantee that, with small-market thinking, we’ll be talking rebuilding for the Reds 2-3 years from now, and the Reds will still be fighting to take…the cellar.

I’ve been a lifelong Reds fan since, but the last 9 years have been absolutely abysmal. Just when you think the Reds will finally put together a good team, they bring in an idiot for a manager and well the rest is history. Cincinnati fans deserve better. Instead we see our superstars traded for players that will never crack the 40 man roster.

By Justin

August 11, 2008 5:48 PM | Link to this

Think about it. Dunn wasn’t traded at the deadline because either no one wanted him or the asking price was too high. So the asking price came down a bit, and they found a taker. Buck has at least started to move up in the D-Backs organization, which can’t be said for these picks the Reds would’ve gotten in the draft. The PTBNL in the trade is probably one guy that the D-Backs need for the stretch run, and then a lesser prospect. I understand Reds fans are growing more and more impatient, but until ownership settles in and lets one guy run the organization for 5+ years, rebuilding will continue.

The best thing about this deal, after listening to the assistant GM on XM a little bit ago is that the to PTBNL are going through waivers themselves, meaning they are on the Arizona 40 man roster, a lot closer to helping now than Buck.

Yes, Dunn has been gone for quite a while now. Mentally, he hasn’t been there since his golfing buddy Griff was traded. Dunn and Griffey should have been the team leaders. They should have been team players. But their sloppy play canceled out their Big Bats. Those homers weren’t for the fans or for the team. While they were draws for unwitting fans, things couldn’t be much worse these days. Too bad the Diamondbacks don’t play the Sox. Guess they will have to arrange to hit the links on the off-season.

I’d rather take my chances with the comp picks. Regardless of how long it takes them to make it, its still better value. Players to be named rarely end up being prospects, usually they spend their career playing minor league baseball.

When I saw this the first thing that came to my mind was SMALL BALL. Leatherpants loved the long ball and got as many bombers as he could. Where did that get us? Lets let Walt do his thing. The cash they save from Jr. and Dunn can lock up Cueto and Voltron for years to come. We may be watching the building of a team that can compete year after year. The way it should be.

By Beard

If the Reds had let Dunn walk they would have received 2 draft choices. Those choices would have either been a 1st rounder if the team signing Dunn picked 16 to 30 and then a 1st round compensatory pick sandwiched between rounds 1 and 2. If the team signing Dunn picked from 1 to 15 then the Reds would have gotten a compensatory 1st round pick and that team’s second round pick. Bottom line is that the players selected would not be able to make an impact in Cincinnati for at least 3 to 4 years from next June’s selection. Here the Reds pick up Baker and two other players yet unknown. Baker was once a very highly rated prospect who had to have Tommy John surgery. Well Tommy John surgery is now so routine that many players elect to have the surgery when given the choice between that and rehabbing and rest on marginal cases. Often times the player when recovered from the surgery actually has more velocity than before. Baker is currently in high A ball and will be assigned to Sarasota in the Reds organization. This will project him to be in Cincinnati possibly in the middle of 2010 or beginning of 2011. Where the draft choices wouldn’t be ready until 2012 or 2013 realistically. Now maybe Baker will be a flop but so could the draft choices. And we still don’t know who the other two players are in the deal. They could have some potential too. To me this is a pretty good deal given that the Reds had obviously made up their mind that they weren’t bringing Dunn back.

To clarify my last entry - I meant to sale Valentin still gets no respect. He played Sunday for Votto and he and Dunn are the only hitters with quality ABs - they made the pitcher work. With Dunn gone and Valentin rarely playing, the Reds may go down on about 60 pitches a game with all the first or second pitch swingers on this team. This team is scary bad. I can’t even laugh at Bowden’s bad Nat’s team anymore.

To all of the people whining about this trade — GET OVER IT! Dunce wasn’t going to take this team anywhere but further down… & Griffey had already accomplished that. No team was going to give the Reds squat for either of them. It’s time to rid this ball club (not a ball team) of the dead weight. Jocketty should continue by unloading EE, Patterson, Arroyo, & Baker (not particulary in that order). & to Mike in Dayton…. marquee players may put butts in the seats, but it doesn’t win ballgames. What’s the priority?

I really don’t get this trade, other than dumping salary. I was fine with letting Jr. go - give him a chance to win while we all knew the Reds weren’t picking up his option. And dumping Ross is fine - Reds catchers are among the worst defensively (don’t they lead the league in passed balls?). But now we have a .200 hitting everyday catcher and a weak hitting backup (still no respect for Valentin) and now CP has to start in the OF and he’s still below the Mendoza line. If I’m a Reds pitcher, I feign injury just to preserve my arm and W-L record since the already anemic offense is only going to be worse now. This team is harder to watch than those bad 80s teams. I thought Homer’s comment about the Bats having good morale said everything there is to say about this Reds team.

I hope this means they are going out on the free agent market to get a power hitter or two. There sure isn’t anyone in the minors who can replace Dunn’s numbers. I’m happy for Dunn - now he’s on a first place team. Maybe we can sweeten the deal for AZ and get them to send us Webb. Give them Bailey, Janish and Votto with Dunn for Webb. Those guys have high upside, but they can be easily replaced.
