Sit him down…oops
This is why anybody who knows baseball (and I should know better after 36 years) shouldn’t make rash judgments and harsh criticisms on the short term. And it is also why baseball is such a great game.
In the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game, BEFORE Edwin Encarnacion missed two sacrifice bunt attempts with the Reds down by two runs with no outs and two on, I wrote what you can read just below.
Fortunately, I didn’t post it until I watched Encarnacion bat. After failing on his bunt attempts, he crashed a three-run game-winning walk-off home run.
Here is what I wrote up until then:
It’s only two games into the 2008 season, but isn’t it time for a benching?
For the second straight game - and they’ve only played two games - third baseman Edwin Encarnacion made a costly throwing error, something that is seemingly inbreded into his psyche. Catch the ball, throw it away. Catch the ball, throw it away.
The Cincinnati Reds finish the three-game series against Arizona Thursday afternoon and if Ryan Freel isn’t at third base, then Jeff Keppinger better be there with Juan Castro at shortstop.
Encarnacion needs to sit and watch and pontificate. He needs to take extra ground balls and make extra throws before batting practice - the way former manager Jerry Narron did with him before every home game.
Offensively, he walked his first two times up on Opening Day, but has gone 0 for 5 since then, striking out his last two times.
(Insert here a rather large, important home run) My bad.
His throwing error on Opening Day led to an unearned run in the first inning of a 4-2 defeat. His throwing error in the fifth Wednesday led to two unearned runs.
So, you play manager. Does Encarnacion start today? Does Ryan Freel start at third? Does Jeff Keppinger start at third and Juan Castro at short? Or do they bring back Jolbert Cabrera to play third?
Guess what? Encarnacion will be at third base this afternoon.
But he still needs to work on his throwing - at least I can salvage that out of this night.

He still needs to be benched. We need ballplayers that can consistently produce and do the little things. You can’t count on Encarnacion to his a three run bomb every time. When you need to get a bunt down, you need to get a bunt down. When you need to get a force out at home, you need to throw the ball straight. Those things happen every night. A three run homer doesn’t.

Hal, I agree with Todd. You should have heard the ‘Cowboy’ on FSN last night… Eddie at the plate. Thom: This guy is a clutch player. Cowboy: I’m telling you Thom, this guy cannot hit in the clutch. He just can’t. Pop, Home Run. Cowboy: I love it when I’m wrong! Ahem…which is more and more often these days. Listening to Brantley is pretty brutal…

It was only 2 days ago that Dusty mentioned working on bunting. They just left Spring Training, where they were supposed to work on these things. I would like to say “forget the bunt, E5”, but CHAMPIONSHIP teams do the little things!

Encarcion will never be a major league third baseman— trade him to an AL club and put Keppinger at third. But then even though Griffey is an asset to the community and club and can still swing the bat Jay Bruce should be in right and Hamilton in center— but then that’s why I am in the cheap seats and not the GM Box.

some guys are not paid to bunt, that is just the way it is. he is not a bunter, never has been. if he comes to the plate in that situation, he needs to swing away. Castro was on the bench if Dusty really wanted a bunt, and if it worked out and the game went into extra innings, kep slides to 3rd, and Juan plays ss. not EE’s fault, he is not a bunter, but yes Jeff Brantley, he IS clutch.

good lord folks didn’t you get the point of the post? don’t make harsh judgements on a short sample size. remember the D he showed after being called up from l’ville last year? the kid can play, it’s between his ears more than anything. i like hal’s idea of the extra groundballs before every game. if i’m making the lineup he’s starting today vs. LH doug davis. play freel or hopper in center, leave kepp at SS, EE at 3rd, and bako behind the dish. we need all the right handed bats we can get today, that cunnythumber davis kills us. be interesting to see who has the leg up as the rh centerfield option today…

Sit him down, get Jacoby to put his behind in the batting cage & make him learn how to bunt. Then make him take extra fielding practice. Sad to say, he’s in the same boat as Matt Belisle — they haven’t learned from their mistakes & the light bulb hasn’t come on for them. & oh by the way…. just how many 1st pitches does Corey Patterson have to swing at before Dusty realizes that he’s not a leadoff hitter? Nice dinger last night after working the count a bit. After that, 1st pitch swinging & getting out. His light bulb’s still not on, either.

Yes, the 3-run walkoff HR was sweet but it masks some glaring weaknessness. Two throwing errors in 2-days…sheesh. His attempt to bunt was pathetic. I can do better. No, really! When Gonzo returns, then what? Kepp to 3rd? EE’s “D” is killing us. If I’m a pitcher, the last place I want the ball hit is to EE.

Encarnacion looked like a fool trying to bunt. Has he ever squared up in his life? Heck, I’ve even seen Adam Dunn put good bunts down. Two errors in two games is frigtening. Home run or not, DB should get in Edwin’s ear and tell him he needs to get his tail in gear.

I think you start Edwin tomorrow. This might be the spark he needs to get going. I’d give him a couple more days before I bench him. Although this situation could get VERY interesting when Gonzo gets back. Can you really put Kepp back on the bench? This could be interesting. LetsTalkReds.com
