Snakebit! Bengals’ Smith fractures left foot

How do you go from optimism to pessimism in a hurry.

Just ask the Cincinnati Bengals.

After all, they’re “snakebit.”

How else do you explain first-round draft pick Andre Smith’s injury?

The rookie right offensive tackle suffered a fractured left foot late in Tuesday’s practice, an injury that won’t require surgery but could sideline him for up to a month.

Smith pulled up lame less than 48 hours after signing his contract — a four-year, $26 million deal that could balloon to six years at $42 million.

Head coach Marvin Lewis, in a statement released through the club’s public relations department, said Smith “suffered a small fracture in his left foot during a non-contact drill. Our medical staff tells me the injury will not require surgery. It’s too soon to closely predict how long it will be before he can return to practice. But it looks like he’s going to miss a few weeks.”

Smith’s exit solidifies second-year Anthony Collins as the starter.

Collins is a mobile, athletic tackle who has done a good job in pass protection, but he’s not a mauler at the point of attack in the run game.

The Bengals were buoyed by the presence of quarterback Carson Palmer, who practiced with the starting offense for the first time since suffering a high left ankle sprain on Aug. 14.

But Palmer likely won’t play in the preseason finale against the visiting Colts on Thursday because Lewis wants him completely healthy for the Sept. 13 season opener against the Denver Broncos.

Is it possible his foot was already broke, and he shot it up with pain killers for a few days hurried and signed that contract and “Ohh look I broke my foot in a non-contact drill !” I know its far fetch. Also there is the argument that if you sign your draft picks early on and get them into a training regium, that these injury do not happen as often. Basically Smith came into practice right off the street, even those he says he was working out, maybe workin on a box of Twinkies. If this sort of thing happens once or twice maybe its a fluke but year after year these high draft picks come up lame, it no longer a fluke. You have to step back and find a solution within your program to prevent these situations

It happened, oh well. Hopefully the organization will force him to go on a diet and do what weight training he can to get him closer to some resemblance of shape

Talk about bad drafting. The Bengals always blow their first round pick. Gimme a break. They should have never drafted, let alone give him a huge contract. I think he is guranteed 21 million. Mike Brown, it’s time to hire a GM. Wasted another early 1st round pick.

And for all of this and a few cents less, they coulda had Eugene Monroe. Curse you Mikey Boy! PS - Nick save your breath nyc is full of it, it blocks his eyes and ears. He is the “Child” Chad is always referring to.

Maybe they can void his contract because it is within a 72 hour time frame. Send him packing and do what they should have done and go after a proven veteran. His conditioning and work ethic were always in question.

There is irony in this. The Bengals, whose game is winning contract negotiation —negotiated with this guy for as long as it took, several weeks past the start of practice in order to get the contract they wanted. They do get that contract, but then lose the guy. In a cast for 6 weeks, rehab a couple weeks, ready to play but only with a couple of days practice halfway through the season. The Bengals win their battle, but could lose another war. Hopefully this doesn’t play out like Ki-Jana Carter.

Lax20 Proven vets do not want to come here, unless it is just to collect a paycheck. Competitive vets want to go to a winner. This team is and always will be a loser so long as the Brown family runs it.

On the other hand, Andre could have blown out an ACL or MCL; ruptured an achilles; or gotten the dreaded high ankle sprain of doom. He should be able to work out in many ways while the bone in his foot heals and perhaps most importantly they can get his southern-fried diet under control.

haven’t you heard. DDN decided it doesn’t need a sports department. Hal and Chick are gone. DDN is obsolete. Chick was the only one at those press conferences that would consistantly ask Marvin something he obviously did not want to be asked. But don’t worry, I’m sure the cheerleader co-captain Hobs and Lap will pick up their game. I think I’m gonna go ahead and start holding my breath now.

I guess I’ll just go back to sniffing Eli Manning’s dirty jock because the only action I’ll get is from the responses complaining about my idiotic posts. It’s pretty obvious I’m a lame *ss loser who has nothing better to do than rip on Dayton Daily News websites from NYC.

You have to be KIDDING me ????? He has a BROKEN FOOT ????? Hey Bungal fans, this is not even funny any more. I will bet my paycheck this will be another first round draft pick that ends up being ANOTHER BUST. Mike Brown is a BONEHEAD. Can you PLEASE get some people in the front office that will allow your team to be at least somewhat respectable with their scouting and draft picks ?????. The only thing I respect in Cincinnati are all you dedicated die hard Bungal fans that will not give up the ship. You guys deserve a reward from Mike Brown for sticking with this organization. I applaud you die hards for not bailing out.

Snakebit? The Bengals pick a lazy player whose weight balloons while he holds out and who shows up in camp out of shape. That’s why he got hurt. Not because the Bengals got snakebit. Give me a break!

Please tell me the FO has it in the fine print that their offer is void if a player turns up lame. They shoot horses, don’t they? What makes anyone think Smith won’t get injured time and time again?

Just in…Andre Smith was just seen rehabbing his injury at the Golden Corral. Also, the over/under on his weight when his injury is healed: 375 lbs.
