Quan Cosby excited about punt return job
COSBY WILL GET AN OPPORTUNITY
TO UNSEAT ANTONIO CHATMAN
Let’s play a little game of Cincinnati Bengals Jeopardy!
The answer: Quan Cosby
The question: Who will be the team’s No. 1 punt returner in 2009?
Calling the punt return position “like a famine,” special teams coach Darrin Simmons is looking for a playmaker.
Cosby, the former University of Texas wide receiver who blistered Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl, will be given every chance to unseat injury-riddled Antonio Chatman for the job.
“There’s nobody that wants to stay healthy more than what (Chatman) does,” Simmons said as rookie minicamp concluded Sunday, May 3.
“But we’ve got to find a player who’s going to be an impact player back there to positively affect us in field position, especially as our defense improves.”
SURGERY FOR MORGAN TRENT
Cornerback Morgan Trent is out until training camp after suffering a foot injury on Saturday. Trent underwent surgery in which a screw was inserted to repair a small bone fracture.
BENGALS SIGN CENTRAL STATE DT
Defensive tackle Pernell Phillips of Central State University was among three tryout players signed to free agent contracts.
The others were tight end Darius Hill (Ball State) and long-snapper James Smith (Florida).
Is this the year veteran long-snapper Brad St. Louis gets beaten out by a rookie?
Stay tuned.
KEEP YOUR CHINS UP
Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman (St. Henry High School) and Western Kentucky defensive end Dan Cline (Centerville High School) were among the tryout players not offered contracts.
“Todd did a good job with his ability to throw the football,” head coach Marvin Lewis said before the signings were announced. “We’ve got four quarterbacks right now (Carson Palmer, J.T. O’Sullivan, Jordan Palmer and Billy Farris), which might be a tough nut to crack.”
MAGIC NUMBER IS 80
The roster stands at 86. Eighty go to training camp.
