Cosby could emerge as top punt returner
CAN COSBY BE THAT
OASIS IN THE DESERT?
(Quick hitters from Saturday’s rookie minicamp workout at PBS:)
Quan Cosby and Tom Nelson are sharing the duties in that area of the desert known as “Punt Return.”
Special teams coach Darrin Simmons used the word “famine” to describe that desolate territory.
Even though Nelson (Illinois State) has been impressive, look for “Q” (Quan Cosby) to make the squad because incumbent PR Antonio Chatman is too brittle.
Cosby makes people miss. Period. Just ask the Buckeyes.
• With a year of practice-squad work under their belts, WRs Mario Urrutia and Maurice Purify look much more comfortable.
Purify is snatching the ball out of the air and running like the wind.
Urrutia made a nice over-the-shoulder catch, which made up for him jumping offsides.
• Sixth-round draft pick CB Morgan Trent jumped a route and made a nice interception. Mike Zimmer is working hard with the DBs, who need to get better “jams” at the line of scrimmage.
• The other sixth-round pick, TB Bernard Scott, shows some nice wiggle. He owned up to his troubled past, saying he’s been clean for two years. Dude’s got some wicked moves through the line of scrimmage.
• Cornerback Eric Thatcher, a former Pitt star from Moeller High School, said he stayed true to the Bengals during his days at Pitt. He said he wasn’t afraid to unleash the “Who Dey” cheer in the Steel City.
• TB Marlon Lucky was on the sidelines in street clothes Saturday. He pulled up lame on Friday with an apparent hamstring strain.
• QBs Billy Farris and Todd Boeckman locker next to one another. They’re becoming good friends. Farris straps ice to his right shoulder after each practice.
• DE Michael Johnson is an outstanding athlete, but he hasn’t rushed past Andre Smith yet. It’s like Johnson hits a wall when he collides with Smith.

Quan Cosby has sneeky speed and will make the team.
