Fired up for Opening Day (and another satisfied ‘Big Boy Pizza’ customer)

REDS OPENER, NCAA TITLE GAME,

MASTERS GOLF TOURNEY MAKE

FOR A DREAM SPORTS WEEK

===LUDWIG AT LARGE appreciates hearing from Price Hill natives, Ruth Lyons lovers and Cincinnati Reds fans. Here’s an E-mail sampling.===

FROM BOB IN MINNEAPOLIS:

“Chick: I grew up in Dayton. The Cub Scouts had an annual Father/Son Saturday outing of taking the train from downtown Dayton (B&O) to Cincinnati to watch a Reds game at Crosley Field. I didn’t like sports, but I loved trains. I remember twice doing that with my Dad (Pop) and bringing along my best friend, Marty Roderer of Roderer Shoes (Town & Country) because Saturdays were a busy day for his Dad and his shoe store on Watervleit Avenue in Belmont.

“They passed out box lunches on the train. A ham sandwich, a cheese sandwich, both on buns, Mikesell’s chips and a brownie. I would trade my ham sandwich for Marty’s cheese sandwich because at an earlier Cub Scout outing, we toured a meat plant and watched cows slaughtered and cut up, which made me a little queasy for meat but didn’t seem to have the same effect on Marty.

“My first apartment in Cincinnati was in Price Hill overlooking downtown. A beautiful view.

“In the mid-1970s I got a job at WLWT-TV as the Art Director and later promoted to Marketing/Promotion Manager. During the Art Director years I designed the new set used in the mid 70s to 80s for the BBS (Bob Braun Show). Met lots of his guests. Never met Ruth Lyons. But knew Cliff Lash, later Teddy Rackel, along with Rob Reider and other members of the cast … Nancy James and Mary Ellen Tanner.

“The years in Cincy were fun. Carefree and young.”

FROM FRANK IN SUBURBAN ATLANTA:

“Loved your article on Oldest Team. I, too, grew up playing baseball in Price Hill. It sure seemed to be the center of little league baseball (Knothole Baseball, is what I remember it being called. I remember the same playgrounds. Something must have been right about the baseball played there. There was a period where Elder and West Hi had more baseball state titles than anyone else.”

THE CHICKSTER …

Continues to get cards, letters, E-mails and telephone calls from folks who love my “Big Boy Pizza” recipe. Here it is … again. Your spouse will love you for making it.
