Bengals eye OT; Browns want a … QB?

HOW SHOCKING WILL IT BE

IF BROWNS PICK STAFFORD?

Just saw where football analyst Mike Mayock predicted the Cincinnati Bengals will select University of Virginia offensive tackle Eugene Monroe with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft (April 25-26).

Mayock claims the Cleveland Browns will grab Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo at No. 5.

The Pro Football War Room on sportingnews.com agrees with the Monroe pick for the Bengals, but totally disagrees with the Orakpo pick for Cleveland. The Pro Football War Room has the Browns grabbing Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford at No. 5.

Mayock has Stafford going No. 1 overall to the Detroit Lions, while the “War Room” has the Lions selecting Florida State defensive end Everette Brown because the Lions believe Brown is in the mold of Dwight Freeney.

If the Browns pick Stafford, it’s a sign new Cleveland coach Eric Mangini has zero faith in Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson.

Check out Eugene Monroe:

Somebody tell MB draft days are April 27,28 and let CP and ML do the drafting on April 25,26. Perhaps then the Bengals will get the right draftee if MB and family show up a day late and a dollar short, (so to speak). As for Mangini, the Browns may be expanding all over again!

Do any of the offensive tackles have a wrestling background? Paul Alexander loves guys with wrestling backgrounds. If James Laurinaitis were a tackle instead of a linebacker Paul Alexander would be as giddy as Mike Brown when he finds a penny on the sidewalk.

We (the Bengals) dont need to draft an OT in the 1st round! Dhani Jones is 31 years old and we need a replacement with a fierce no-BS attitude like Ray Lewis! And we can get that with Rey Maualuga. We need an identity for the defense like Marvin has been preaching and we are being handed that this year with Maualuga. Collins and Livings did a great job last year when they played. Let them show what they can do this year instead of making them sit again, we drafted them to let them play, so lets let them!

Cincy needs to take a DT not a DE and they need to take him in the first round. Actually they needed the player last year but were too stupid and didn’t get it done. Look, a monster at DT will probably bring the team into the top 5 on defense. That means playoffs to me. Also, if they get the right stud that can bow the line then they can throw anyone in a DE and still get plenty of sacks. Look at the successful teams in the league they don’t piddle around on defense. If the team can wait until the 2nd or 3rd round for a DT then surely they can wait until the 2md or 3rd for offense. Also, you don’t want to pay big money for an OT. You pay that kind of money for a defensive stud or a glamor position. Another point is that we want the DC to be involved because he has shown that he is a winner and the head coach and OC don’t know what the f…. they’re doing. If they take a high pick for offense it will be a wasted pick. This team needs to trade up to get the stud at DT.

There is NO stud DT in the draft. Raji is unproven to me! And Simms was a MONSTER when he finally got in at the end of the year. And look at what Sam Adams did when we brought him in a few years back. Nothing. And they dont get any bigger than him! I agree with you on not draft a OT in the 1st round, though! Maualuga with the 6th pick!!!!

The Bengals need to trade the pick if Monroe or Smith is gone. I think Monroe goes to Seattle and Smith to the Rams. The Bengals should trade with Philadelphia as they will jump at a chance to take Crabtree or Orapko. The Bengals should draft Mauluagua and Laurinatis in the first round. Mauluagua would play SLB because he is a beast as a passrusher. Laurinatis is the MLB because he is smarter and more of a leader than Rey. Then trade Chad to the Giants for a second and 4th round pick. Then they can select C Alex Mack and OT Jamon Meredith in the second round and trade back up in the second to get DT Ziggy Hood. You win championships with DEFENSE not OFFENSE. It is time for Palmer to step up and quit whining about how he doesn’t have any weapons on offense.

Signing a first round OT is imperative. In lieu of a free agent Center signing, the second round choice should be used to fill the black hole at that position. Failing that, I recommend the Bengals hire armed body guards to protect Carson Palmer while he’s in the game as the offensive line won’t be able to do it. When it comes to protecting quarterbacks, lets hope history doesn’t repeat itself and deny Palmer the Hall of Fame opportunity Greg Cook never got.

Continuing to put Carson behind an inferior offensive line sounds like a splendiferous idea! He only has to play Baltimore and Pittsburgh twice a year each, so he’ll be perfectly fine. Besides, who says you have to adequately protect a once-in-a-lifetime franchise quarterback anyway?

Finally some guys are starting to see the light. Dhani is 31 let’s face it, plus he would be a great strong side backer to considering how much Jeanty’s been hurt. Rey is the man! Maybe trade down a little if you can but don’t risk it. We may be a year away still, so Carson hang on we’ll get you a OL in the second and some weapons in rounds 3 and 4. Rey is the last piece of the puzzle on D! He alone will make the pass rush much better. Just think if Levi is ok or even a quality back up, plus maybe we then sign a gaurd/tackle after the draft, there will be plenty available. No need to panic. If we have a quality D then Carson won’t have to do as much next year. Next year we’ll address the entire offense including Chad. We’ll get a RB and an OL. Revamp for one last run with Carson and a great Defense!

Anybody know what Rudi Johnson is up to these days?

By Brian

March 12, 2009 10:24 AM | Link to this

Levi Jones is done. You can inject a 55-gallon drum of chicken fat and WD-40 into his bum knee and it won’t change the fact the cartilage is gone. For the record, they’re out both a left and right tackle as well as a center, though simply ending the “Swinging Gate” Ghiaciuc experiment is an upgrade by default. Defensive improvement is irrelevant if the offensive line is so putrid the offense is endlessly going three-and-out and the improved defense is perpetually gassed from never getting off the field.

i get so tired of hearing people suggest that should trade down. They can’t just decide to trade down….NO ONE WANTS TO PICK IN THE TOP 10. Last year was a fluke with the two trades up to #7 and #8. having to pick in the Top 10 and overpay a rookie is the only punishment for sucking the previous year. They’re stuck with that #6 pick. Feel free to rip me if they find a suitor, but you can pretty much count on them being “on the clock” after the doo-doo-browns pick. So they better take Eugene Monroe or BJ Raji, cuz if they take Crabtree or Moreno, we’re lookin at another 4-11-1…..

Our line was great the the last few games of the season. It should look like this ATLEAST until next year. Collins, Livings, 2nd rd Center, Williams, and Whitworth. Livings and Collins both proved they deserve a shot last year. There is NO WAY you pass on Maualuga!!!! Everyone has been crying for a fierce Ray Lewis type player to give our defense an identity and we are getting handed one and everyone just wants to pass it up! No way, draft him and lock him up long term!

Rey Maluagaua? Are you freakin serious? DO you guys remember a guy named Rivers? How abotu James Johnson? Jeanty? You are dumb to think we dont have depth at LB. We need OT. Plain and simple. Protect Carson adn the D will do what it needs under Zimmer. We can pick up a decent LB later in the draft if need be. But for gods sake we need a top O Line, cant deny that any more. Rey Malauauaga, gimme a break.

It’s amazing how Bengals players ALWAYS seem to peak in those last few games of the season, long after they’ve been eliminated from playoff contention. Modest success against the Redskins, Browns, and Chiefs clearly supersedes getting beaten like a drum by the Colts, Ravens, and Steelers beforehand.

No way do the bengals take Maluagaua. Get real. The Bengals will to OT at 6. 100 percent. Our defense is a rising defense, and we just took Rivers last year who barely even played. Let’s get some knowledge folks. If Monroe falls to 6, consider us the luckiest team in the draft.

Here we go again, every year the Bengals draft either a offensive lineman or a cornerback.PLEASE DONT DO IT. If there is a NFL DRAFT BOOK for Dummies send it to the Bengals. They probably will wonder what it is.

jakedasnake: its not james johnson rofl thats our 4th string running back.. its brandon johnson… and RON: when has carson ever complained about not having weapons?? please give me the link to where you have sen or heard that… and you can have a defense but what happens when there on the field for 45 of the 60 minutes? you have to have a ol and a defense. you have those two things and your gonna go far.. look at the titans, no one gives there ol credit, but thats what kept collins from getting sacked and there rooking running back looking stellar..

JakedaSnake, please comment on here once you have some sort of clue about the Bengals roster. Or clue in general. And Johnson AND Jeanty arent even signed yet! So, they arent even in the mix! Just like we had depth 2 years ago when we had only 2 LBs to play against the Patriots on monday night football. Not mention NEITHER one of them have the intensity to be the fierce guy to give the defense an identity! But, yea, lets stay a soft defense that gets ran all over by Pitt and Baltimore and let more ROOKIE qbs light us up! But we can draft an OL so we can keep calling the SAME predictable calls that dont work like we have the past 3 years!!!!!

By Kevin

March 12, 2009 3:25 PM | Link to this

Shawn, you are clueless. We had the 32nd ranked offense and one of the worst lines. If you can’t run the ball you can’t win. OL. get a clue Shawn. Every NFL guru agrees. I trust them more than I trust some fan hack who thinks he knows it all calling into 700 wlw. OL. That will be the pick. Get used to it right now. Start complaining right now. we have a franchise QB to protect. We have to run the ball. Or it won’t matter WHO is on defense (that finished 12th in the NFL, BTW… we don’t need defense in round 1) We will get defense, and good ones, in other rounds. You take an OL when you draft that early unless you need WR or QB, and we need neither of those. So Shawn, once again, get a clue.

Whats the difference from my opinion as a fan and YOUR opinion as a fan??? Youre opnion matters just as much as mine, and thats NOT AT ALL! And our offense finished dead last because of the terrible backup we had. Palmer got hurt on a freak play. Make the argument that he got hurt because we had no line, but brady got hurt in week opne, does that mean he doesnt have a line either?? Roethlisberger almost led the NFL in sacks, does that mean they need to draft an OL too? Our line looked so terrible because we had Prissy Perry in the backfield who could gain 3 yards to save his career. Benson showed that the line was worthy once he got to start. Our offense will be top 15 this year, as long as Bratkowski learns how to call a decent game and open the playbook! So, Kevin “get a clue” and realize that we are ALL just fans who love their Bengals!

Shawn: sorry but you are a LOSER. Look at all the successful teams (Indy, Giants, etc), they all have good OL. That’s where you start builing a team, you moron. If Palmer has no time to throw downfield, where does that leave you? And your comment about how great the line was the last few games, do you remember what teams those games were against? So please enroll in Football 101 and then come back to the blog and make insightful comments please.

sasafrass, im sorry, but YOU are a moron! You can NOT base any judgement on last years line! One, we ran the ball for sh!t last year so all the Ds we played knew we couldnt run the ball so they played with 6 and 7 in the box. Not to mention we didnt have Palmer and Fitzpatrick only had 3 games starting under his belt. He held on to the ball WAAAY too long! And its not like Bratkowski is REALLY going to open the playbook up this year! It will be the typical up the gut on 1st and 2nd down and then a little screen on 3rd! And please, look at the successful teams like the Giants, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, San Diego (when they dont choke in the playoffs)what do they all have in common??? They have big fierce LINEBACKERS!!! Something we havent had in how long??? Where did we go when he HAD the best OL in the NFL??? Nowhere, then eliminated when Palmer tore his knee and then nowhere again! So YOU go and enroll in football 101, douche!

Shawn: I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have called you a loser, I should have called you a PATHETIC LOSER. Your lack of football knowledge is only exceeded by your lack of logical thinking. I feel sorry for you , so I will give you a Football 101 lesson for free. You asked “Where did we go when we HAD the best OL in the NFL???” Well since you asked, we went to 2 Super Bowls (XVI,XXIII)with a great Offensive Line lead by Max Montoya and Anthony Munoz. Most of the people who know the draft recommend Cincy build the Offensive Line, but clowns like you say “No build the defense”. Palmer needs time to throw downfield, which Kenny Anderson and Boomer Esiason both had. Once you can stretch the field other things open up. I do agree with your comment about Bratkowski, how he wasn’t fired I’ll never know. I think Mike Brown has him pegged for Head Coach when Lewis leaves. Well, if you have any more questions, just let me know. thanks.

In reply to JakeDaSnake the bengals don’t have a linebacker by the name “James Johnson” on their roster. I think who mean Brandon Johnson, who is a free agent as is the other Linebacker you mentioned Rashad Jeanty.
