Can UD chop down XU in tonight’s rematch?

‘SENIOR NIGHT’ AT CINTAS

A BIG CHALLENGE FOR UD

The Dayton Flyers are 24-5 overall and 10-4 in the A-10.

The two powerhouses collide tonight (Thursday, March 5) at 9 o’clock at the Cintas Center in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2. Bob Wischusen will call the play-by-play with analysis from Hubert Davis.

It’s “Senior Night” for the Musketeers, who look to avenge a 71-58 loss to the Flyers at University of Dayton Arena on Feb. 11. XU senior B.J. Raymond needs six points to reach the career 1,000-point plateau. He’s downplaying it, but you know it’s going to be an emotional night with the Flyers in the house.

After absorbing three losses in a four-game stretch over 13 days from Feb. 7 to Feb. 19, the Musketeers — who seemed to be sinking fast — rebounded with back-to-back victories over George Washington (71-53) and Saint Joseph’s (68-54).

Dayton, meanwhile, stopped a two-game losing streak with a 70-65 victory over Temple.

UD closes the regular season at home against Duquesne on Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m., while XU finishes up at Richmont at 7 p.m. Saturday.

FROM MUSKETEER KEVIN

Chick: Enjoyed your recollection of basketball at Schmidt Fieldhouse. I was born in 1954, too, and grew up in Covedale. I remember Pelkington, Bill Kirvin, Joe McNeil, Bob Quick and, of course, Steve Thomas. Thomas was one heck of a player (30 ppg as a junior). Talked to him at a book signing at Cintas and told him his number (“10”) should be retired.

Who can forget Al McGuire’s trips behind the curtain at the Fieldhouse or Dicky V’s antics with the Detroit Titans. The XU students really got on him. And how about “Dave the Coke man”? He must have been 85 years old, but was always in the stands selling pop. All great memories!

Chick: Attended last night’s game at Cintas which was preceeded by dinner with a UDSL classmate and former law school prof. Muskies started fast with Dante Jackson playing the best he has at point all year. X’s seniors and Derrick Brown weren’t doing much in first 30 minutes of game but afte Flyers held X to just 8 points in 1st 10 minutes of 2nd half, fortunately they came alive. Dayton’s offense sure was fluid and the ball movement impressive. But Flyer injuries hurt UD in theis game. Did not see the pre-game staredown but I just did not like my Muskies not shaking hands after the anthem. But I was glad to see the teams shake hands after the game and seemingly exchange friendly words. It is an intense rivalry and both teams fought hard and should be looking at NCAA bids.
