Dayton hoop legend Dwight Anderson, a story about ‘what might have been’

BASKETBALL HALL OF FAMERS

MARVEL AT ANDERSON’S TALENT

===LUDWIG AT LARGE is getting psyched for the upcoming “Flying’ to the Hoop” event coming to Kettering’s James S. Trent Arena on Jan. 17-19. Nobody attacked the rim like Dayton legend Dwight Anderson.===

If you’re a fan of basketball — high school, college or NBA — then you have to click on this line:

Listen to the testimonials from Isiah Thomas, Joe Dean, Mark Aguirre, Dominique Wilkins and Daequan Cook.

It’s the story of the greatest individual basketball player the city of Dayton, Ohio, has ever known.

Before there was Michael Jordan … before there was Kobe Bryant … before there was LeBron James …

There was Dwight Anderson, the original “Number 23.”

“Dwight Lightning.”

“The Blur.”

From Roth High School to the University of Kentucky to the University of Southern California to the Washington Bullets to the Denver Nuggets, Anderson’s fame was fleeting.

He burned bright on the national stage. And just like that, as fast as you snap your fingers, the flame was out.

But he’ll always be a Dayton legend.

Born on Dec. 28, 1960, he’s 48 now … still living in the Gem City … and I hear he can still play.

My question is: Did you get a chance to see him play live?

Sadly, I never did.

I was hired at the Dayton Daily News in June 1979 when Dwight was at UK.

I like what Wilkins said. The saga of Dwight Anderson is a story of “what might have been.”

He made the most fantastic shot I have ever seen while he was playing at USC. Flying out of bounds across the end line, does a 180 in the air, shoots it up over the backboard from behind - nothing but net. From that came the Dwight Anderson rule that made that illegal. Wish I could find the video.

There have been so many great ones that I really hate to not acknowledge some other era’s “great ones”. Don May and Bill Hosket were also in a class by themselves. It is hard to say greatest ever. I believe you must go by greatest of their era. Chris Carter was a great basketball talent too.

Yes I watched him play a few times..greatest ever? mmm maybe, maybe not. I was at UD Arena for a tournament game, not sure he had commited to UK yet, some UD fans were thinking maybe UD, but he got ejected, can not remember why…but people said then he will never play at UD after the ejection

Certainly Dwight was among the best ever to come out of the Dayton Area. I graduated from beavercreek in 76 and watched him play a lot in HS. I average about 60 Hs games in person a year and he is still one of if not the best.

Chick…I played against Anderson in high school and even guarded him or at least tried to guard him. I think I did hold him under 40 points. He probably was as athletic and quick as any high school player I have seen. Too bad he never fully realized his potential due to his drug problems.

It would have been nice if UD would have recruited his nephew Mark Anderson before Miami University. Mark also has a lot of talent and potential.

Did see Dwight Anderson in the Roth vs. Colonel White High School basketball game and it was a once-in-a-lifetime event! The cat-like quickness, athleticism and accuracy from the perimeter was watched by a standing-room audience that never sat down the entire game! The Dayton area has had some great high school or college players - some who never reached their full potential and some who did. From Dwight Anderson to Johnny Davis to Rosevelt Chapman to Harold Rimbler(?) to Ron Harper to Mark Trammel to Benny Harper to Ridley(Fairview High School) to Kalor Williams, etc. etc.

Dwight Anderson is the most talent player ever out of Dayton Ohio, but drugs did him in. Ron Harper and John Paxon are players that play to there abiities, but I saw Dwight go against Harper on the courts while Harper was playing with Clevland and Dwight not only held his own, but looked like the better player, but the problem with Dwight was his size was small for a shooting guard and he was not a point guard, so that hurt him. He is still the fastest player I ever saw getting down the court.

I saw Dwight play alot in high school. He was the best I’ve ever seen at the high school level. Could just dominate a game. How about Chris Carter as a basketball player at Middletown; how good was he huh? HIs broth Butch was probably the 2nd best h.s. basketball player I’ve ever seen.

“I’m looking for the Dwight Anderson video of that freakish full court sprint with the 180 degree turn.” I remember seeing it and it was dubbed by HBO as the greatest basketball play of all times. Shooting that shot did not make it illegal. Shooting from behind the backboard was already illeagal. The rule was in place to keep the tall timber from using the back of the backboard as a shield and lobbing the ball over and in. The Centers would do that in the old days until the rules was created to stop the bigun’s. “No shooting the ball in from behind the backboard,” Screwed Anderson, and USC on that technicality and lost that game because for them. Those points were wiped off of the scoreboard and there was no time remaining. They would have one by one point.

I watched a lot of H.S. basketball during the late 70’s and I was at every one of Dwights home games at Roth during his senior year, he was the best player I’ve ever seen…and I’ve seen a lot of players. I was in the Gem City just today and I ran into Dwight and we reminisced about his playing days at Roth, he told me that they had him on youtube so I looked it up….it brought back many memories to watch him in action again. I bragged to my girl about how good he was and its nice to finally see something about him on the internet.

to the wizard, you need to get the facts. bobby austin was player of the year in 1978 voted by both cincinnati’s newspaper. bobby austin was first team all-state with dwight anderson. bobby did not get major pub , he didnt go to the 5 star camps or to the bc all camp. several coaches had bobby rank higher than dwight. bobby had a better shot and a better vertical jump. dwight was faster, austin and anderson was about 6-2 bobby wt. was 190 dwight 180. for your information lasalle thompson has said on record bobby austin was one of the greatest players he has ever faced, the only player he could compare him to is air jordan….dean smith and mike o’koren has said on record bobby is in class by himself on quickness. i will scan the clippings to you mr. stupid !!!! in fact uc ex coach has said bobby austin is in the same class of dwight anderson, bobby reminds me of lousiville explosive guard darrell griffith. bobby austin was just as talented as dwight anderson.
