Hunting for more than “1” sack

ANTWAN ODOM

HAS BENGALS’

ONLY SACK

FROM LEAGUE-LOW 22

IN 2007; TO LEAGUE-LOW

‘ONE’ SO FAR IN 2008

One sack.

Are you kidding me?

One lousy, measly quarterback sack.

What’s up with that?

Folks, it better change — in a hurry — if the Cincinnati Bengals hope, wish, plan and want to win a football game.

The Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants have 13 sacks each. They’re at the top of the leaderboard.

The Bungleoids have uno.

“There’s a sense of urgency,” defensive end Frostee Rucker said.

Good to hear because if the Bengals don’t sack Cleveland’s lame duck quarterback, Derek Anderson, then they’ll have to board a plane to Dallas at 0-4, attempt to kidnap Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and bring him back as their next head coach.

Antwan Odom, who has the lone sack, claims the unit — which is still adjusting to new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer’s scheme — needs to “stop thinking so much and just go.”

Hey, studs, it’s high time you pin your ears back and pin Anderson’s No. 3 jersey in the FieldTurf.

With the Bengals’ luck, they’ll knock Anderson out of the game in the first half and Brady Quinn will come in, toss the pig all over the yard, and throw a TD pass to Braylon Edwards with 18 seconds to go for a Browns’ victory.

Then Quinn will start every game for the next 15 years and become a first ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer.

IN MARVIN LEWIS’ WORDS:

“Those things come in bunches within the NFL season all the time if you look at how they come as you keep doing things the correct way, and then all of a sudden those balls start to bounce your way and you get the pressures you need. You just keep going and keep executing and your timing’s got to be good and your takeoffs and things like that, and being in the right spots and the right pressure points at the right times.

“It’s a mentality that most defensive players have and I think it’s when you become sure of your job and your responsibilities, then you’re in the right spots a little quicker, and that’s what happens, and you get more of those, and our guys have been very good at that. We’ve gone through droughts before, and then things turn around. You just keep doing it the way you’re doing it and good things will happen for you.”

ALL OF THIS ‘COACHSPEAK’ REMINDS ME OF A SONG …

TO HONOR THE BENGALS’ SACK PACK …

What’s new! We haven’t had a pass rush in 17 years. As for those long, 17 years, that’s the same amount of time since this organization has experienced a playoff win. Longest in the NFL! So stinkin’ embarrassing. But hey, it’s business as usual because we know what we’re doing and have a plan.

Chick, You’re a journalist, right? So as a journalist how do you think a coaching change would make a difference for this disfunctional franchise. Marvin is the most successful coach this lame franchise has had in 20 years and I commend him for hovering around .500 for his career as the Bengal coach. I could care less that he is not a good interview. Knowing Mike Brown’s ability to make horrible decisions, we should be thankful we have coach Lewis. You should watch the games with a more anaylitcal eye - then maybe you would be beating the drum for a GM or Bratkowski’s head.

Everybody including Chick has been beating the drum for a GM since Mikey took over. As for Bratkowski, isn’t he Marvin’s choice as OC? Maybe you should get a clue.

Hey Chick, Thanks for the light hearted “3 Dog Night” video. It really made me chuckle and brightend my day and outook for Sundays’ game (which I’m fying into to attend!)

I don’t buy the “new scheme” excuse. Most of these players have played football before, right? They should know how to pressure a QB without a coach holding their hand. I admit I had high hopes with Zimmer. So far his impact has not shown much. I hope by the end of the season his defense will be rolling.

well, a lot can be said about the lack of sacks. I thought the dancing was good in the video. I don’t think that Melissa should be allowed to fy anywhere (sic). As for the sacks there are those, myself included, that said that they needed to go after a monster at DT in the offseason. It didn’t happen and they even let a rival team pluck a player out from under their noses. They weren’t prepared then and they’re not prepared now. There’s no defensive improvement from last year and hey, what happened to the DTs that were drafted this year? As for the team it’s like an episode of the twilight zone. It’s like the invasion of the body snatchers have come done and sucked the brainpower from all football minds in the greater Cincinnati area. Where do we begin. First we extend contracts and rewared players to hold them for the future. Then one of them says that he wants to be traded after last season and another is flat out cut at the beginning of this season. Next you cut a troubled player and your head coach says that he doesn’t want him back and then the onwer brings him back anyway. Next you don’t resign your leading tackler on defense from last year plus you also cut a top draft choice at LB and cut half the LBs that you used in preseason. Your best defensive player may not be big enough to play DE. You have a mediocre Defensive line at best, an extrememly young LB corp and 4 totally young DBs. You drafted defensive players this year and they aren’t in the line up. Your OL is unstable and have given up 9 sacks in 3 games. (They’re on pace to give up 48 sacks) Your waive the #2 RB draft pick from last year before training camp and you cut your most experienced running back before the season and elect to go with a player that has played roughly 1 year of experience and the player that you cut is playing for an inempt team and is having a better year then the player you kept. You drafted 3 WRs this year and none of them are good enough to crack the starting line up. Wait, I’m sure there’s even more to tell. Anyone who thinks that the coach or the owner know anything about football have to be kidding me. God, Oliver Stone needs to be brought in to make a movie of this incompetence.
