Marvin ignites firestorm with fans

FANS DESERVE MORE

RESPECT, EMPATHY

THAN COACH SHOWED

LEWIS APPRECIATES FANS,

BUT SOMETIMES SUFFERS FROM

FOOT-IN-MOUTH DISEASE

===LUDWIG AT LARGE’S take: It’s my honest belief that Marvin Lewis appreciates Bengals fans. He just doesn’t know how to express his feelings at times. One of those times was Wednesday when he showed very little empathy for fans. He certainly could have chosen his words better. He has to remember: Without Bengals fans, there would be no franchise in Cincinnati. Without the fans, there would be no NFL. Marv needs to look around his beautiful office and thank Hamilton County tax payers for it. My, oh my, how soon we forget who foot the bill for that monument to football on the Ohio River. It’s the Taj Mahal of football. But the product inside is mediocre at best.===

As soon as the words came out of Marvin Lewis’ mouth in his Wednesday, Sept. 10, news conference, I knew there would be trouble.

Sure enough, there was.

The telephone calls started pouring in to the Lance McAlister Show on WCKY-AM (1530 Homer, The Sports Animal) from angry fans.

After discussing the importance of winning at home, I asked Marvin if he had any advice for fans “on the ledge” after his team’s loss at Baltimore.

“Do what you’ve got to do,” he said. “That’s what the focus is. If you’re a fan, then be a fan. You get to determine that.”

Another question from a colleague — How do you motivate players as a coach-psychologist? — triggered this 384 word filibuster from Lewis:

I cranked out the transcript, and it WORE ME OUT!!!

IN MARVIN’S WORDS:

“We just lost one game. Unfortunately, 16 teams lost a game. That’s all you do is get back up and go. We lost one football game. Every time you go out here in the NFL, there’s an opportunity to lose. And if you don’t play good enough, then you lose. That’s what you get for it. You learn from it. You pull back together. You get back to work.

“You correct the things that need to be corrected. You try to do things more positive. The things that are positive, you keep trying to build upon and then you get ready and you go look at the opponent and see where the things are where we ailed this week. We’ve got to overcome some injuries like we talked about and so do everybody else. And as you get going, you just get back to work. But you don’t sit there and worry about it.

“Last week, it’s gone. You don’t get anything back from it. You learned a lesson. You got hit in the mouth and you didn’t win the football game. We sat there in the fourth quarter, waiting to make a play. To make one offensive play, one offensive touchdown, we win the game. We couldn’t do it. So this week, let’s score some points and let’s win the football game. Plain and simple. That’s what it comes down to.

“We did a lot of good things, but not things good enough where we could score points. And that’s what counts. We had opportunities. We had third and one, we had fourth and one, we had field position, we had chances on defense to stop ‘em, and we didn’t get it done. We had chances in the kicking game to make bigger plays. We didn’t get it done. We did a lot of good things. We downed some balls inside (the 20). We tackled well on the kickoff team. We punted the football as well as we punted. We covered the punts other than the one they hit us in the back at the point of attack, and did well.

“But lessons learned. You’ve got to come back and you’ve got to play. It goes right back to those simple points, and you get it done. Somebody made the statement — that’s not here in this room because he doesn’t show up here — about cliches. Well, that’s what it is. It’s not a cliche. It’s simple things. Simple facts. That’s what you do. You go back to work and get better at the things you’ve got to get better at, and this week will present new challenges, and that’s the thing that this is all about.”

Who is the somebody Marvin refers to that makes statement, and then “doesn’t show up in (this room)”? He sounds upset with them and not his horrible team.

Pretend for a moment that Marvin Lewis is coaching another team… let’s say Tampa Bay because he almost got that job once… and he starts showing a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease. Don’t you think the Glazers would quickly have a word with him? Maybe direct the PR Department to give him a few tips? Well, I think so, and I think he would respond well to it. And does anybody think Mike Brown helps him that way? Me neither.

I started my personal “fan” boycott a few years ago when I gave up my 22 year season tickets. I now plan to move on to phase 2, I won’t support any businesses that advertise with the Bengals - including e-mails telling them so. Maybe this might give Mike Brown a clue!

Marvin is hands down the worst head coach in the league right now. When you listen to what he says, it makes you wonder if he has a clue about football. I know he doesn’t want to say much during the interview and that is why he uses those simple “cliches” all the time, but man it makes me wonder if he is as dumb as he sounds. “stop the run, run the football, don’t give up big plays, we played well EXCEPT for a few plays, score more points, get back to work, etc”

If Marvin had been hired by any of the more respected programs he would have been gone after last year given his playoff success. He should thank his lucky stars the fans have supported him this long but I feel this year is his last chance.

As someone who has been misquoted and had a quote taken out of context by the media I take a different view of Marvin’s comment yesterday. I believe what Marvin was saying is very simple, the true fans will stay fans the others will or will not. It’s their choice; so be it. Chick let’s be honest, for whatever reason many of your questions seem to set Marvin off. Why I do not know but after many years of listening I have noticed the trend. That does not mean I think you ask bad or rude questions, it’s just seems to be the way the dynamic works. And if people pay attention to other coaches press conferences you’ll notice the same thing happens in many markets starting w/ Coach Hoodie. Remember when he worked in our northern toilet the media hated him. And if Marvin had his recent record no one would care what he said to the media. Is Marvin with out fault? Of couse not, nor am I. And if anyone is w/o fault they’re a better person than I am. Look we’re all frustrated w/ how the team is doing but I think this is just a case of piling on.

Two things …first, after reading Lewis’ statements, what he said made sense to me when you look at it thru his eyes in his position. As for the fans, one would think that after a bit, one would think better before investing their money in this mess. Who dey?….who cares!

For some reason the press in this town is dying for Marvin to be more humble and lay his heart on the table during these press conferences. When he does speak his mind he is then trashed for being “arrogant.” (If he would just be more humble and contrite, last week’s loss would magically turn into a win!) The bottom line is if this team is winning, the press looks the other way. When the Bengals are losing, Marvin is “arrogant.” Lance wants Marvin to be more like Zorn and make goofy comments about punching himself in the face over last Sunday’s loss. Newsflash: What is said in post game and weekly press conferences doesn’t change the outcomes of games already played and over 90% of the FANS don’t CARE what is said. Do you really think Marvin thinks the Bengals are good? He knows they suck, does he have to spell it out? Marvin provides a spark, the press provides the paper, wood, and gasoline…

I’m not seeing the problem with Marvin’s comments. If you are a fan be a faithful fan - win or lose. Anybody can be a fan when you are winning 10+ games every year and making the playoffs. But a true fan is there through thick and thin. That’s what Marvin was saying. Nobody has had more heartbreak, frustration, missed opportunities, etc. that the Cleveland Browns. But every game played in their stadium since I can remember has been a sellout unlike the Bengals who’s fans sell their team out at the first sign of trouble. Browns fans are always faithful, always sporting their colors. Even when Cleveland didn’t have a franchise I saw more people donning Browns gear than Bengals gear. I didn’t know there were more than a couple hundred Bengal fans in the area until 3 or 4 years ago when they made the playoffs for the first time in a decade+. Fan up people!

You people talk about being a fan. Yes, I have always rooted for the Bengals and will continue to do so, but I will not invest money in tickets or anything else until they put a winning and professional product on the field. The sad thing is, I don’t see it happening anytime soon. It has been 18 years since we have had a contender.

When I read that crap it made me even madder! So, sent an email to the Staff Writer along with the letter I sent Mike Brown. By the way I doctored that letter up and sent out a second letter. Read below: September 9, 2008 From: Ken Dippel 4931 Forest Drive Loris, SC 29569 (843) 333-2513 Attention: Mike Brown, Owner of the Bengals As a Bengals fan I am totally ashamed of the team that has been put on the field the past few years. The opener against the Baltimore Ravens was a total disgrace. The Bengal team that was on that field for the Ravens game looked like a bunch of Powder Puff girl football players. They could not even beat a high school football team. There was no effort at all put into winning this game by the Bengal players. These are suppose to be paid athletes who are suppose to lay it on the line every Sunday and to give 100 percent each and every day. Many are getting paid millions of dollars to do this. Yet, they forgot they were obligated to play like NFL professional football players. They forgot how to block and tackle. Last Sunday we saw an offensive line that looked like it could not block an 81 year old woman in a wheelchair. Many players looked like they did not have a clue where they were. Many showed no concern that they were actually on an NFL playing field. We saw on the defensive side of the ball players who missed tackles and who allowed a rookie quarterback to streak down the field 20 to 25 yards! My grandmother could have gotten down field and picked up a first down on this defense. This should have never happened! The defense still tackles like a bunch of PEE WEE HERMITS jumping on the back of an elephant! The team was a total disgrace to all Bengal fans and to the Cincinnati community. I blame the coaches and you as the owner for this! The players and coaches should be ashamed of themselves. They call themselves NFL players and coaches. I have seen better coaching in a Pop Warner football game. At least there coaches are teaching the kids the fundamental basics of football. How to properly wrap up and tackle, how to block, and how to hold on to the football without fumbling! Where are these basics in Cincinnati? You still got defensive players who are trying to tackle the other teams’ players by jumping on their back like they want to play leap frog. It is a disgrace! Mr. Brown, we Bengal fans deserve better. It is your job as the owner of the team to put together the best possible players to give the city of Cincinnati and Bengal fans a winning team. For the past several years there has been only one winning season in Cincinnati. It was that season the Bengals went to the playoffs. Since that time I have seen this team steadily go down the toilet. This is due to your misguided player personnel decisions you have made! Never before has the Bengals in their history had a strong defense to count on to win football games and to make the big plays when it counted the most. Mr. Brown you have made terrible moves. You continue to make numerous blunders when it comes to making decisions on players and even coaches. You spent this years draft on bringing in mostly new offensive players when there were major problems on the defense which should have been fixed first. You got rid of Willie Anderson who was perhaps the best offensive lineman in the NFL. You sent Rudi Johnson packing and now there is no dependable running back in the Bengals backfield. The team is now in need of a high caliber running back. Shawn Alexander is out there. Yet, you have made no move to bring him in and sign him. After this year Albert Haynesworth, Julius Peppers, and even Ray Lewis will be free agents. If you have any desire to ever win you should try to get one of these players in a Bengal uniform. Bengal fans deserve a winner and I want to encourage you to sign Albert Haynesworth, Julius Peppers, and even Ray Lewis when free agency comes. I now understand why Chad Johnson wanted out of Cincinnati. Your blunder decisions are now showing up on the field. Your poor management skills and player relation skills are producing a losing team that is a total disgrace to the NFL and to Cinncinati fans. The Bengals are now being called the Bungals! Maybe you should do like the Miami Dolphins’ owner did which was to hire a GM and good player personnel relations manager. Where is your desire to win? Why have you not focused in on fixing this girlish defense? What about the offensive line that looks like a wet sack of crap! The defense still looks like a bunch of PEE WEE football tacklers who have not learned the basics of 101 tackling (hit and wrap them up). The so called Jurassic Line looks like they forgot their job as professional NFL offensive lineman is to block and to knock the other teams’ defensive players off their arses! When a Bengal fan sees the kind of play that showed up last week at the Ravens game it calls into serious question player dedication and also the coaches ability to prepare the team for a game. The Bengal players were obviously not prepared to play that week. The fault with that lies with the coaches. You should seriously think about talking to Marvin Lewis and the entire coaching staff about game preparation and the constant teaching of the fundamentals. Your father always as a coach did this! He was a master at doing this. This is what made him a winner. Where is your pride Mike Brown? Your father would be totally ashamed of you. You have taken what your father had built into a respectful franchise and have continually run the entire Bengal organization into the dump! You should be ashamed of yourself! You as an owner are a disgrace to the NFL and to Cinncinati fans! I say this not to just be critical of you. I say this because I hate to see the Bengals lose and I only want to see Cincy win! I want to see you a winner! I blame you, Marvin Lewis, and the entire coaching staff for producing a half hearted gutless football team. It is the coaching staffs’ job to get the players ready for the game to play on game day. It is your job as an owner to be committed to putting on the field the best players who have the desire to win and who will give 150 percent each and every day to win. Players should be willing to do everything to win and if they do not win they should be dying trying to win each and every down. Moreover, it is your job and the coaches job to create a winning atmosphere and to install a program that thrives on discipline. Where is the heart to win in Cinncinati? Where is the coaching? We need a Vince Lombardi type atmosphere and hard nosed disciplinary coach in Cincinnati! We need a coach and coaches who will run practice like military boot camp so that there will be discipline and always an all out effort to win at all times. I and many other fans just do not see that in Marvin Lewis or the offensive coordinator. Have you thought about making some coaching changes? “Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate”. “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual”. “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand”. These are the words of Vince Lombardi in which you should think about. Last Sunday I watched in outrage to see a Bengal team that totally stunk! They clearly were not prepared to play. It seemed there was more attention being placed on Chad Johnson’s name change to “Oucho Cinco”. The game plan by the coaches stunk! The defense did not stack the line to stop the run which is something every coach in the league uses to stop a team who is committed to run like the Ravens. There was no bump and run coverage by the defensive backs. Common sense tells you that the defensive backs have got 5 yards to do this. Why then should they play back and let the Ravens’ receivers streak down field before those 5 yards is up without getting their jersey dirty that first five yards? The next game I want to see the Titans receivers get knocked off their arses! No more free passes to get down field during that first five yards. I believe the key to winning for the Bengals is to play hard nosed defense and to play physical smash mouth football! No more Mr. Nice Guys! It is time to take the gloves off and get physical! I want to see the Bengals when they play the Titans to stack the line and to knock the crap out of any receiver soon as they line up for a pass! The Bengal defensive backs by doing this could make life hell for any Titan receiver. Linebackers and defensive backs should be up at the line. Linebackers should be shooting the gaps and should knock the crap out of any running back that tries to squeeze through! Most importantly I want to see tackles made when they should. It is basic 101 football (when you hit you always wrap the player up). You do not have to have a great offense to win. All you got to have is a defense to stop the other team from scoring. Just look what the New York Giants did during the Super Bowl. Do you honestly think they won the Super Bowl with an explosive offense? Please fix the defense first because without this commitment by you losing will continue in Cincy! On the offensive side of the ball how about some play action pass when you are going to run the ball? How about a couple of Carson Palmer rollouts when he throws down field? How about some screen passing? Please start making use of that 300 pound line by doing trap blocks and running the power sweep (student body right). This was one of Vince Lombardi’s bread and butter plays. There is no reason why this should not work in Cincy! The fans and media are starting to question your motives, your commitment, and the coaches’ commitment to winning in Cincy. Maybe you should talk to Jerry Jones and ask him how he always seems to put together a winning football team. Ask him what it takes to be a winner. Jerry Jones hates to lose and you should take note to the fact he will do anything to win even if it means bringing in a controversial player. This also includes bringing in the best talent in the league to win. A good example was the signing of Owens and most recently Pac Man Jones. True owners who are committed to winning now are willing to make a move now to bring in the most talented players now to win! Just look at the Patriots’ owner what he did last year by signing Randy Moss. The point is sometimes you got to bite the bullet, cough up the money, and to do whatever is necessary to win. “The commitment to win is not a part time job”. “It is an all around job”. If you are constantly rebuilding with younger players you are never going to win! You could ignite so much excitement in Cincy if you were to ever get Albert Haynesworth or a Ray Lewis or a Julius Peppers in a Bengals’ uniform. If you were to ever accomplish that I can beat your bottom boots it would be worth every penny! The best way to quiet your critics is to let your actions speak louder than words. Winning will come to the Bengals when yourself gets really serious and committed to bringing in the best players. As a Bengal fan I just want to see winning for the Bengal team and to see this team maybe someday soon of having the privilege of winning a Super Bowl. I have not seen this type of commitment in you or the entire Bengal organization the past couple of years. Make us a believer in you and the Bengals entire organization by bringing in an Albert Haynesworth at DE or a Ray Lewis at MLB. Right now Shawn Alexander is out there. Please get him in and sign him. The Bengals desperately need a veteran dependable back now! Shawn Alexander has a boat load of talent. He reminds me of Brooks who was traded to Cincy from the Chargers many years ago. Do you remember Brooks? It was that year the Bengals went to the Super Bowl. If you gave Chris Henry another chance then why should you not give Shawn Alexander the same opportunity to play in Cincy? I do want to let you know I agree with the decision you made to bring Chris Henry back despite what many others may believe. Mr. Brown deep in your heart I think you know Bengal fans deserve better than what is on the field now. If the losing continues in Cincy please bring in a new head coach (Bill Cowher) and a new offensive coordinator who is a hard nosed disciplinary. Please stop giving up on our best players and stop just giving them away free to teams like the Ravens. The last game against the Ravens was a first class joke. We Bungal fans demand change so we can look up and say proudly once again someday we are proud to be the Bengals! As a lifelong Bengal fan I just want to see them win and if they do not win I want to see the players and coaches giving everything to win. My saying to you is this: “Win we will and if we do not win we will damn sure die on that playing field trying”. Respectfully, Ken Dippel, Life long Bengal Fan

Many miss the point! The fans of the Bengals and the city of Cincy deserve to have a winning team! The true desire to win is not there! When you got a coach making a comment like that about Bengal fans something is wrong! So, you are suppose to be a fan and tolerate losing every season. So, you are suppose to sit down and shut up and watch a team that never can play hard nosed football. According to Marvin just be a fan. This is like this: If you are being cornholed pucker up and smile!

How much money and time have we invested into this team/stadium And for what? years of losing seasons with promises and expectations that are never met. I am a fan of the Bengals, and probably always will be. That does not change the fact that We want and deserve a winning team. Effort people, thats all we’re asking for! This issue is getting blown way out of proportion! It is a “non-issue.” If I was Marvin I would become quickly tired of all the redundant hypothetical crap questions from reporters, too. And, I agree with him - if you are a fan and you don’t want to pull for the Bengals anymore, pull for another team and get over it. He’s got bigger and better things to worry about than your fickle nature. If he doesn’t win this season, he’s probably out of a job.

Anyone remember that recent winning season? I only remember it because it was the sme time that Mike Brown and Co. were getting SUED by that group of attorneys in Cincy, who were seeking to get millions of dollars in taxpayer money refunded by the Bengals organization (money that BUILT that stadium, not Mike’s personal wealth). The reasoning was, The Bengals promised to field a COMPETITIVE football team in exchange for taxing the hell out of people (even those who didn’t live in Hamilton county, such as residents of Dayton) to build that stadium. Well, once the lawsuit went away, so did the winning of games. (which judge did they pay off to make that dismissal, anyways? I forget.) Mayeb it’s time to reestablish proceedings against the Bengals club and ownership. They OWE us, and they don’t seem to CARE if they ever make good or not. It amazes me how much power the citizens of this country have, and so little desire to use it. If you want change, simply STOP buying tickets, and don’t show up on Sunday for a few weeks. It WILL get their attention. Empty stadium seats are NOT good advertising for NFL Properties, Inc. Much comes from sales of things like replica gear, beer, food, parking, and many other miscellaneous things sold to the fan. If you aren’t there to BUY them, they are going to notice. And then, things will change. They don’t change now, because they are quite content to make as much money as they can, week after week, from your apathy and laziness. Why should they change anything? They save buttloads of money by fielding a scrub team with no motivation to win, because you KEEP PAYING their meal tickets, and hold them accountable for nothing. You think the PRESS has any influence over them? They don’t. They care even less about what the press thinks than what YOU think. The press put no money in their pockets. YOU DO. So, if you want change, STOP ATTENDING. CANCEL your plans to support this season now. Don’t travel on the road with them. Don’t go to home games. Do not spend money on Bengals merchandise. A year of lost income, and faced with still having to pay those high salaries to those underperformers you see week in and week out, and things will HAVE to change, because they will not be able or willing to endure those losses in income. It’s up to you, people. As it stands right now, you whine and complain and call the Bengals losers and scrubs (which they are), but then, in the next breath, you hand over gobs of your hard earned income to allow them to prove it to you that they are indeed scrubs. Your money is better spent playing online poker, with just about as much chance of winning. Start THINKING your way through the problem, instead of simply griping about it. There ARE many other things to do on a nice Sunday afternoon in the autumn.

Anyone remember that recent winning season? I only remember it because it was the same time that Mike Brown and Co. were getting SUED by that group of attorneys in Cincy, who were seeking to get millions of dollars in taxpayer money refunded by the Bengals organization (money that BUILT that stadium, not Mike’s personal wealth). Thanks for the political diatribe, GW. Now, go and define “competitive” for me. Difficult is it not? That lawsuit was a frivolous waste of time and again - taxpayers dollars. If you were not aware, we also finance the courts that “dramedy” was played out in. And, once we’ve paid hundreds of thousands of dollars so a bunch of attorneys may once again haggle over what makes or defines competitiveness for an NFL team we will end up in the same place we started… nowhere. I have supported the Bengals for thirty plus years of my thirty-eight years on this planet. I intend on following and cheering on a team that I don’t always agree with, that frustrates me to no end, that broke my heart in two winnable Super Bowls, et cetera… because, it’s my team. Whether you believe this or not the Bengals have no desire to lose. We are talking about highly competitive (oh, that dreaded word again) people who hate to lose at anything, especially football. So, if you want to boycott go ahead - but, I will assure you this: If the Bengals lose their franchise and they sneak away in the night to another city (i.e. Cleveland Browns, Baltimore Colts) the City of Cincinnati WILL NOT GET A REPLACEMENT TEAM. Enjoy your Sunday washing your car.

Wes, If you are done being an apologist for the Bengals and their horrid play, I’d like to take a moment and thank you for helping me make my point. You and your ilk are the ones who support this tragedy of a team, irregardless of their performance, personnel, or off the field drama. And that’s exactly why nothing will change in Cincy anytime soon. Because you and yours will keep subsidizing them. As for whether or not the lawsuit was effective, costly, or needed….well, someone at least made the attempt, and that attempt was better than anything I’m seeing from the Bengals. So, kudos to them. As for the definition of ‘competitive’, you’re right. It is hard to define sometimes. Maybe I just set the bar a little higher than you and your complacent, apologist friends do. I think my definition would fall squarely into the area of a ‘good showing’. And if you think what we saw Sunday against the Ravens was a ‘good attempt’, then you are clearly cognitively impaired, and should really get some help, or at least stay off the roads and not endanger the lives of others. So, we will agree to disagree. I will continue to press for boycotting the Sunday soap opera known as the Cincinnati Bengals, while you continue to apologize for them and maybe suggest that Ocho Dinko get an honorable mention at the next ESPY’s for originality of idiocy.

I am a Bengals fan through thick and thin what Marvins says about fans is TRUE. I am personally ashamed of Cincy sports fans in general I went to the Reds game last Friday and it was like Wrigly south. We as fans have a right to gripe but at then of the day you have to stand up for your team. I don’t care if the fair weather hudy fans take a leap off the Brent Spence. GO BENGALS, GO MARVIN fair weather fans just GO AWAY!!!

Whoa! GW, my cognitive ability is fine thank you; but, your logic is clearly flawed. Where do you get that I am an “apologist” from my post, and pray tell me how you equate that to poor driving? What a bizarre stretch you make for an invalid point. There are no apologies for the Bengals’ play last Sunday. It was appalling! But, then again, so is your separation from fact and fiction. Whereas you feel frivolous lawsuits and boycotts are beneficial to what takes place on Sundays… I have more than the modicum of perspective you appear to exhibit. I will remind you that you remain free to cheer for [insert alternative NFL/college team here] or enjoy all of those other wholesome autumnal activities you mentioned in your previous post. But, I really could care less for your “march to the gates and burn Rome down” post. For all of the pleasure and displeasure the Bengals have given me over the years…. It’s still a game buddy. So, get over yourself.

To those in this list who are picking on chick, have you ever listened to Marvin’s press conference on the radio? He acts like he is discussing state secrets here, or contributing a new equation to the body of mathematics work. Come one folks, it is football. This is the same game we learned in peewee, it’s just at a faster pace. I believe Marvin is the problem, not Chick. Chick isn’t stirring things up, Marvin and the way his team plays is. For crying out loud, they lost to a first-game rookie last week. I haven’t turned in my Chad Johnson jersey yet, but it is close to going on the goodwill pile. Keep up the good work Chick. You stink, Marvin. We need a new coach. Now.

I get that you are an apologist from the fact that you clearly state your support of a broken product….’I intend on following and cheering on a team that I don’t always agree with, that frustrates me to no end, that broke my heart in two winnable Super Bowls, et cetera… because, it’s my team.’………sounds very apologist to me, at the very least, dense. As for burning Rome, as you put it, if history serves, Rome fell into decline for the same reasons the Bengals have….complacency and keeping the status quo. Granted, Rome was a much grander dream than anything Mike Brown will ever produce, but complacency and defense of the indefensible will always be the tools of the apologist. I’m a fan too, but I guess I demand a little more for my hard earned dollar than you. You are right, it IS a game. But at the prices being asked for tickets to one of these games, even the ones that are right NOW being dumped in quantity onto Ebay by wiser fans, one should expect to see something a little better than this tragedy of a team. I’d rather be a fair weather fan anyday, then be the fool who is soon parted from his money in exchange for a broken, inferior product like the Bengals. For the record, I don’t blame Marv for any of this. He can only work with the tools he has at his disposal. It shouldn’t be his job to make MEN out of these immature boys. They should already be at that stage of their life, old enough to understand the responsibilities that come with being a highly compensated professional, and structuring their efforts accordingly. But they are not, and their play shows that fact clearly. The fact that you seem to be OK with that is what MAKES you an apologist. Whether by accident or design, the result is the same. Droves of fans like you are what will keep this team in the basement for many years to come. Keep cheering for a loser, instead of demanding a better product. That’s the easiest way to get through. Little more than handing over some cash is required, and no one calls you to task for standing up and demanding something more appropriate to the price you pay.

Chick, Thanks for asking what is on the minds of many of the fans. If Marvin can’t handle the questions perhaps he isn’t head coach material. (His W-L record as HC also seems to back this up.O

We need more people like Marvin. He never makes people accept responsibility for their own mistakes. It’s always somebody elses fault. He’s my kind of guy.

Some of you need to get a life…..If you are a fan you are a fan. Marvin is just as frustrated as everyone else beacuse he wants to win. He isnt used to a losing environment and its starting to p**s him off. I would be pissed off to if half of my pffense were crybabies, the cities reporters just love to report about the team negatively and the fans complain when most of the time they have no idea what they are talking about. Look at the Raiders fans, the Redskin fans, the 49er fans….these teams stink but you couldnt tell by looking at the support. You are either on or you or off and if you are off the boat quit sending messages trying to bring everyone else down. Get a life, its a game that few are lucky to play into there thirties and these men are compensated well but by the time they are done playing they will have joints like my grandmother. They love the game and the biggest thrill is the support of your town and community….The way this town is I would be like Ocho Cinco trying to fight my way out of here as well. Get a grip…Go Bengals

Here’s the answer and the fix……… A new stadium with more seating capacity and sky boxes so we can create enough revenue to keep pace with the larger markets and pay for the players we need to field a competitive team!!!
