What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from it?
What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from it?
RON ITZKOWITZ, Union: “Working with my dad at a pawn shop when I was 11 or 12. I learned that life was hard. People have problems, and sometimes the solution was selling things that meant a lot to them.”
DANNY FINLEY, Dayton: “I worked for my dad, who was an electrician. Then when I was 18, I was a machinist apprentice. I enjoyed it. I learned how to get along with people.”
KELLY VERDIER, Dayton: “Picking strawberries in Brown County, Indiana, in 1949 when I was 9 years old. I was paid a nickel a box. My next job was at The Nashville House restaurant in Nashville, Ind. I was very shy, and it was hard for me to talk to people, but I had to in that job. It was very good for improving my self-worth.”
CHRIS HARPER, Oakwood: “I worked in Orchard Park, N.Y., at the concession stand at an ice-skating rink. The women who came up to the stand were so demanding and rude, I just decided I would never treat people like that.”
PAUL GALLAGHER, Huber Heights: “I was a paper boy for the Akron Beacon Journal for three years, starting when I was 14. It taught me that hard work pays off.”
