Are kids today out of touch with the concept of play?
Some studies suggest the concept of “play” is vanishing for U.S. kids, who spend much of their free time in front of TV, computer and video screens. Have you witnessed this?
NATALIE BARNETT, Vandalia: “Yes. I do think families have to make a point to have time for open play. But it’s a different society. When we were young, we could run around the block. Now you can’t let them do that. You have to watch them. It takes more effort on our part.”
CRYSTAL JOHNSON, Fairborn: “Yes, because of the electronics. Kids are more attentive to that. It seems like they come out with a new video game every 60 seconds. It’s a hot mess.”
LES BRYANT, Miamisburg: “There’s probably not as much outdoor play as there used to be, and it’s probably because of the computers and video games. We didn’t have anything to sit in front of, so we went to the schoolyard or out in the woods to play.”
CHRIS BARNETT, Vandalia: “When we were kids, you knew when you got up in the morning that you were going out to play. Now they don’t want to do anything but sit around and veg with game systems and cartoons. You have to make an effort to get kids to go out to play.”
CANDACE MADRY, Columbus: “Today, when you say ‘go play,’ they’ll end up right in front of their video games.”

I’ve coached boys that couldn’t do a single push up, but could crush a Volkswagon with their thumbs. Parents are in control until they abdicate the control to their children.

Liberals gave me a good laugh yesterday worth mentioning here. In NY they decided that some children’s games that are used at children’s camps, if you use 2 of them that are on the list, you have to purchase a permit…red rover, dodge ball, seriously…you need to be afraid of this progressive government and their intervention in our private lives. BTW, Glenn Beck show mentioned what they were doing, and then he got a memo that they cancelled the whole thing about the permits. Guess they couldn’t stand the scrutiny of having to explain why your kids aren’t allowed to play children’s games…seriously…
