What should Congress do about the Bush tax cuts?
The Bush tax cuts are set to expire in January. Would you prefer Congress to let them expire, make them permanent, or make them permanent for all but the richest 3 percent of taxpayers?
GINA COOPER, Yellow Springs: “Don’t let them expire for anyone. People spending their money is more of an economic stimulus than government spending.”
MELINDA HORTON, Dayton: “Keep them for all but the richest 3 percent. The rest of us are really shouldering the burden for them. They should show some patriotism by helping this country get back on its feet and giving some extra. They were the beneficiaries of the ‘too big to fail’ process.”
STEVE HOUSE, Fairborn: “I would like to make them permanent for everybody. With the economy the way it is, everybody could use the tax break all the time.”
JOAN SWANSON, Clayton: “Make them permanent for everybody. We need less government involvement in our lives and more money of our own to spend. And small businesses need lower taxes in order to expand.”
JOE MONNIN, Dayton: “Make them permanent across the board. But I don’t expect the current Congress to do that.”

Why am I not surprised at the above answers, some people just get it drilled into their heads that we should PUNNISH the Rich, when it is the rich that are starting new companies & hiring employees,NO BIG SURPRISE EITHER THAT 41 OF OBAMAS AIDES STILL OWE BACK TAXES,I GUESS IT IS PATRIOTIC FOR CONSERVITIVES TO PAY MORE,NOT DEMOCRATS..

Where did anybody get the idea that paying taxes was patriotic? One of the biggest reasons the patriots that founded this country was that they thought we paid too many taxes. Man, some people are just plain stupid.

Actually, Philman, it’s patriotic to know how to spell conservative, so apparently you hate America.

common cents - besides the spelling lesson, do you have any substantive comments? The shame is that anyone could be brainwashed into thinking because anyone has worked harder to become successful, that it is their patriotic duty to shoulder more than their fair share. This extra share should be made voluntarily through individual charity selection.

beam is right. We all know how hard people like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and yes, our former President George W. Bush worked to become wealthy. And I have it on good authority that they’ve created a lot of jobs. So let’s give them a break, people!

I don’t want the Fat Cats to pay more I just want them to pay what they owe. If I’m paying 25% then they should also. But we all know the the UBS and Cayman accounts that have come to light recently that they’re not paying what they owe…..

I think it is time for the rich to pay there fair share. Warren B pays about 16% tax on his 40+ billion. His own workers pay on average about 40%. How much are these tax cuts for the rich going to cost us hard working 40% payers? This does not seem fair to me. This is the Bush tax cut. Its time it ends.

These were TEMPORARY tax cuts. They are supposed to expire. If any of them are to be extended, it should be because there is evidence that it will help the country more than it hurts the budget.

Make them permanent. Giving more money to the government is like giving an addict another kilo of heroin. The money just gets wasted.

Right on, Jimmie (though I’d agree more when you grow up to be a Jim or a James. We should perform all those useless gubmint functions locally and eliminate most of the Fed.Locally repair all highways, test all foods and drugs, support all police and fire dept costs, teach our children, support our elderly and veterans, not to mention the defense of the country.Good thinking,Jimmie, give the money to the average citizen. They are obviously much more capable of accomplishing these critical functions. What a maroon!!!
