“American Idol” is lowering its age eligibility from 16 to 15 next season. Will this help the show?
PEGGY MURPHY, Union: “I don’t know that it will help. It’s an extreme amount of pressure for the people they put on now. It’ll be even more intense for younger kids. I thought ‘American Idol’ was supposed to launch up-and-comers in their 20s, rather than introduce babies to the business.”
DIVYA POTABATHULA, Fairborn: “I guess it will give an opportunity for younger kids to participate. Talent is irrespective of age, so it will be good.”
ERIKA WALLROFF, Dayton: “I don’t watch it that often, but I don’t see lowering the age limit helping. Fifteen is a little young. Even 16 is a little young. I guess I’m not ready for a whole show of Miley Cyruses.”
DIANNA GERBER, Centerville: “I’ve seen some of the contestants who were turned away because they were too young to try out, and they did well. Justin Bieber (now 16) was 15 when he was discovered.”
JON WANDERS, Centerville: “It’s sad that we’re trying to make 15-year-olds celebrities. The celebrity culture is a little bit shallow. We can teach 15-year-olds to be contributors to society in other ways rather than ‘Hey, I’m famous.’ “
MATT ZAFF, Huber Heights: “I don’t watch, so to me it doesn’t make any difference. But even 16 is too young to be subjected to world scrutiny of that nature.”
EMILY WANDERS, Centerville: “I don’t think it’s going to have a great impact on the show. If they’re going to be a star at 15, they’re going to be a star at 16.”
