Is President Obama right to shift NASA’s focus from a return to the moon to an expedition to Mars?

President Obama plans to end NASA programs aimed at returning astronauts to the moon. He favors sending them to explore an asteroid and, later, Mars. Do you favor that shift in direction?

KENYA HARRIS

KENYA HARRIS, Harrison Twp.: “No, I think they should keep them going straight up to the moon.”

JUDITH HOSKINS

JUDITH HOSKINS, Huber Heights: “We’ve been to the moon, so why not Mars? Hopefully, they’ll still have all their jobs at NASA. Progress is important, even in a stalled economy.”

RICK BLANKE

RICK BLANKE, Xenia: “No, just because there’s plenty of other places the money could go instead of the space program.”

JERRY MITCHELL

JERRY MITCHELL, Spring Valley Twp.: “To an asteroid? I don’t know. I’m just happy the program hasn’t been canceled altogether. It’s important to keep it going. They should send (astronauts) someplace — probably to Mars.”

CAROL MORRISON

CAROL MORRISON, Huber Heights: “I’d say to do something else. A lot of it’s a waste of money. What are we going to do up there? If the world comes to an end, we’re not going to get up there in time to stop it.”

It takes about 8 months to a year just to get to Mars and another 8 months to a year to return. Our technology isn’t there yet but that doesn’t mean we can’t send an unmanned ship to orbit that planet and sent data back to us. This is CHEAPER.

Well, you’d better hurry up and get here soon. I’m going to use my Illudium Q-235 Earth Demodulator on your planet in the near future. Your planet blocks my view of Venus. I,ve intercepted your television transmissions and as Ralph Cramden, a great spokesman of your planet has stated: Pow!!! Straight to the Moon!!!

Why is it up to the president to decide what NASA does and where they go? Is the president the one who is supplying the money for this? I think there are alot more areas the money can go to, feeding the poor? How about some of the programs some states have been forced to close? Give the money back. Let someone more skilled in space exploration decide how the money is spent.

Never let a politician, or even a group, make decisions about how money is spent on scientific exploration. They do not understand it, which explains why they believe their own bailiwick makes sense.

Once the hungry are fed. When our planet has drinkable water for all. Once the Tea Party has dissolved. The Climate clears. The Banks are made to be true, have intrigity or be toppled. When women have a choice. When children are no longer at the mercy of priests and similar life forms. When we can express our beliefs as fully stated as John Coltrane. Miles. When truth is not a doctrine, but an ideal in process. Then, maybe, there will a calling for space travel. Until poverty is overcome and justice is not just a slogan, I believe, move on to real importance. Take care of business, before spaceships. Dmc is Dennis McCarthy (bloggers should say who they are, Get my drift). There is nothing more important than Peace, Love and Understanding.

We have to go back to the moon to mine the Helium-3 for cold fusion. This will provide unlimited power for centuries without tearing up the Earth. This power will be save provide the means to feed and shelter the world. What better use of resources? Why is Obama turning away from the moon? Why is one man trying to determine our country’s future? Mars is far in the future and may harbor infectious life. Best leave it for unmanned probes and possible future terraforming. Solve Earth’s problems first.

Regardless of the destination, let’s get on with it. The development of new things usually comes from DoD and NASA research. It is simply wrong to shutdown the program; listen to the knowledgable people who are working on the NASA program now, don’t cut their throats by ending their job

I’m not a U.S. citizen, I’m not even in the U.S. but my opinion is that being one of the greatest nations in the world they should aim their spending at keeping this world livable, after all it is the only one we can live in by now.

Being as the Constellation Program is not just about the moon, I’m for further exploration, I think NASA knows their program better than the President. Any shift affects jobs right here in the Mason area. This is man rated equipment that the commerical industry doesn’t have. Don’t leave America hang and have to wait on another country to get us to the moon or the ISS.

The conquest of space is unlike any mankind has set forth to do. When the Europeans sailed to the new world they found water and food for the journey home. The Moon and Mars have no real water supply and no food. There is no reason to spend money we don’t have to go to places that have no resources needed for life as we know it.

We should put bases in orbit, on the moon and on mars. First we should place a permanent base on the moon with cooperation will all space faring nations of earth. A permanent moon base will be important for the ongoing future of mankind. This base would be execellent to do servalience of the entire solar system since there is no atmosphere. It would be an excellent launching platform for missells to destroy incoming asteroids and comets, and it would be an ecellent launching platform for future space exploration missions for thousands of years. Prseident Obama has been misinformed that asteroid bases would be beneficial or cost effective.

Regarding Nasa, I believe we should first establish an outpost on the moon for refueling and other obvious reasons. Once we have done that then lets set our sights on bigger and better things.

L: You don’t know what you’re talking about. The “moon landing was faked” business has been completely disproven and discredited by any number of experts. And yes, I’ve seen the TV shows, the movies, the conspiracy websites and the so-called “evidence”. But, that won’t stop folks such as yourself from trying to spread your silly conspiracy theories. Just understand those who have seriously looked at the evidence know you’re full of it.

If anyone believes funding for NASA is a “waste of money,” simply go to federalbudget(dot)com for a reality check. Three days in Iraq/Afghanistan equals NASA’s entire budget for one year. Social Security’s budget for ONE year funds NASA for THIRTY years. “Feed the hungry” first? Maybe if we Americans can stop ourselves from throwing away $500 worth of food per person per year, we might solve that problem overnight — but you won’t, so go back to you gripe sessions and continue using NASA as the nation’s whipping post for everything that’s wrong in this country. BTW — the President is supposed to lead and inspire, but it’s the Congress that controls the pursestrings and directs NASA as to what to do (but it’s supposed to be the People who tell Congress what they want done as their “representatives”).
