Would free RTA bus rides boost Dayton’s economy?
Would free RTA bus rides boost Dayton’s economy?
LAURA INMAN, Dayton: “If that allowed people to go to the eateries or anyplace they want for free, that would be a good idea, because there’s no place to park their cars downtown.”
KEVIN ASHBY, Dayton: “Yes. It’d bring more people downtown from around the county.”
JANICE MORNINGSTAR, Huber Heights: “No, because there’s nothing to do downtown, unless you work there.”
JANIE HACK, Kettering: “I would like to think so — anything to help downtown. You just need to have more things downtown to come to.”
STEPHEN FARIS, Washington Twp.: “In big cities, mass transit is really helpful. People get out more, shopping and doing other things, and they don’t have to worry about parking. I’m not sure about Dayton. I’m not one who lives where it would benefit me.”

I don’t see how. A free ride to nowhere doesn’t do much for the economy. There has to be something for people to go to and that just isn’t in downtown Dayton. The people that you are trying to get to downtown Dayton to boost the economy are not generally the folks who ride the bus and are not likely to start now. A free bus ride to downtown Dayton might get more poeple downtown, but that isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Forget about “free” buses… Develop a downtown street car to connect UD-Brown St.-Downtown then you have ridership to the center of the city. Want to connect the East to the West? Have a Light Rail line on Third Street to connect West Dayton to Downtown then continuing to Wright State Universtiy. Want airport service? Have a mono-rail from Dayton International Airport to downtown. When you have all of these types of rail services then you have a city that is better connected with transportation alternatives.
