New “We are the World” verses classic version: which is better?

It has weirdo rap inserts, obvious computer-assisted singing and no Cindi Lauper or Tina Turner, but the remake of “We Are the World” is undeniably captivating.

Recorded earlier this months and involving more than 80 recording artist - including Jamie Foxx channeling Ray Charles - the song that benefits Haiti relief efforts is naturally being compared to the original version.

The 1985 hit was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and raised money for humanitarian aid efforts in Africa.

It featured nearly every iconic singer from the 1980s - Kenny Rogers, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Cyndi Lauper, Daryl Hall , Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Tina Turner…

The new version, unleased Friday during the opening ceremonies of the Winter Olympics, gives solos to several singers including Pink, Barbra Streisand, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Enrique Iglesias, Miley Cyrus, Fergie, Josh Groban, Justin Bieber, Tony Bennett, Lil Wayne, Usher, and Celine Dion doing shockingly well in Lauper’s old part.

But what do you think? Which do you like best?

I liked the first version better. They should have left well enough alone.

I hope they are not going to try and sell it. If so, Haiti is doomed.

I like them both. I think MJ would have liked the remake as well…especially the reason behind it.

I think the new one is pretty much stinking up the airwaves. It’s a big step down from the original. It just goes to show how unoriginal today’s artists are. They’d have been better off just trying to copy the original. They sure didn’t make it any better.

The 1985 classic stands the test of time. There was no need for a new version. It’s horrible!!

Ugh, it’s horrible! I liked it when they sung it as opposed to the rap version of today.

I am embarrassed by the new version and I hope I never hear it again.

Both have their merits. I don’t think they can really be compared. It’s good they did it again with today’s artists, because there are young people today who may have never seen the original & would not relate to the artists who performed in it. It was 25 years ago. Seeing musicians they listen to today doing this will help bring the cause into focus for them. I think MJ would be proud.

I do believe that MJ would like the new version, but I much prefer the original. Although the Rap insert was an interesting addition, the original had some truely amazing voices that sadly are no longer with us and leave a void.
