Should John Mayer be forgiven for using the N-Word?
John Mayer is very, very, very sorry he used the N-word in a Playboy interview.
Well that’s at least what he said in a string of tweets on Twitter.
Re: using the ‘N word’ in an interview: I am sorry that I used the word. And it’s such a shame that I did because the point I was trying to make was in the exact opposite spirit of the word itself. It was arrogant of me to think I could intellectualize using it, because I realize that there’s no intellectualizing a word that is so emotionally charged
Should he be forgiven?
The “Your Body Is a Wonderland” singer has gotten slammed by everyone from rappers to blogs for using the N-word in the raw.
“Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a n—-er pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’”
Mayer hasn’t addressed his other foot-way-in-your-mouth moments talking about all that sex he had with Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson, and how his manhood is a racist.
“I don’t think I open myself to it. My (penis) is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a f—in’ David Duke (penis). I’m going to start dating separately from my (penis),” Mayer said in the interview noting that black women like Holly Robinson Peete Hilary from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” And Kerry Washington might have a shot with him.

Depends - If he’s a Democrat, he can appologize and move on; If he’s a Republican, it doesn’t matter what he does he will be run out of town. We’ve seen it many times.

Why do blacks use it and it’s just fine? Either this word is offensive or not! Which is it??

Free speech does not require permission or apologies. Whether we agree or not is not the point. In order to guarantee free speech we must be ready to allow ourselves to be offended. This is one of the basic principles of our nation. Everyone know what the word means in today’s society. You can ban a word (perhaps) but you will never ban the thoughts that give rise to such hateful words. Time to move on.

I agree with Demtrius. Either EVERYONE can use it or NO ONE. Holding one group to a different standard is discrimination. People should just get over this and go on with their lives.

I will say forgive him only because he seems to be really sorry about EVERYTHING he said. To address why certain people cant say it to those that dont understand…You have never had to be called it by someone to demean you. To try to make you feel less than you are. If we {African Americans}went around calling you names like p— or crac—- or something and threw food on the floor and told you to clean up after our snotty nose kids you could then begin to understand. We have gotten pass alot of what {WE} as African Americans have been through but some things are still completely off limits

Forgive John for what? A better question is whether we can forgive the self-righteous PC Police for destroying our culture!

Dear Forgive Him, You’re right there are horrible atrocities associated with history of word! Why in the world would African Americans ever even get near the word let alone use it as common, hip slang? Their use of it is today is what I find demeaning no matter what color or how old you are! Get rid of this word in every community and culture…if you want to move on…then move on!

Kinda creepy, associating his manhood with racism and all. Let’s hope after these comments that his p***s doesn’t get action from any race so he can’t reproduce.

@Forgive him Why do you say “African Americans?” Are you actually from Africa? My ancestors are from Germany, but I do not refer to myself as “German American.”

I don’t see why anyone should have to distinguish their race from any other race at all! It is really rather unfortunate but this country will never see past the color of anyone’s skin. If you don’t like Obama, then you must be racist. Huh? I know plenty of Blacks who don’t like him. I know plenty of Whites who love him, Mexicans and Indians, too! Soon enough, every body in this country will be brown. It’s coming. Accept it now because it is coming.

The problem is “Forgive him” that people do call “white people” those terms..and no one seems to throw a fit, but if someone drops the N bomb suddenly the world is up in arms…its not an appropriate word regardless of the skin color that said it. People need to get over themselves. Welcome to America, the land of free speech…if you don’t like it leave.

Forgive him?? Absolutely not. It really gets tiresome to hear these celebrities spout (especially in this vein) and then ask for forgiveness. We’ll probably see him go to rehab next…

If there’s anything he shouldn’t be forgiven for, it’s his music. As for the second quote - what, are we morally obligated to date people we’re not attracted to now just to prove we’re sufficiently dedicated to diversity and equality? Get over it.
