What’s at heart for Valentines Day this weekend?
Another Friday has arrived, and people are taking stock of the things they’d like to do for the weekend.
So what are you all up to? Taking a romantic date at Skyline or White Castle, maybe? I actually just got an email for one of Cassano’s heart-shaped pizzas. Isn’t that cute? It’s shaped like the organ that will have an attack if you eat too much of it! ;)
Going out to a movie? The only new “date movie,” as it were is Adam Sandler’s Just Go With It, a remake of Cactus Flower. The reviews aren’t too kind, though, and I lost interest when I saw an “Ow, my crotch” gag in one of the TV ads. Some people just never mentally age past 14, ya know?
As far as other movies in theaters, The King’s Speech isn’t a date movie, but it does have a nice portrayal of a couple between King George (Colin Firth) and Queen Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter). Besides that, it’s thoroughly entertaining,
Another Oscar nominee, The Fighter, isn’t really a date movie either, but Mark Wahlberg and Amy Adams strike sparks, and it’s great crowd-pleaser.
Then there’s Blue Valentine with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. The film is stunning, but I wouldn’t recommend seeing it this weekend unless you’re like me and Valentine’s Day depresses you and you’d like to wallow in a fictional couple’s breakup.
Looking for something older to watch on TV? The good folks at Entertainment Weekly have come up with a very fine list of classics, to which I would add The Clock (Judy Garland and Robert Walker fall in love in New York), A Matter of Life and Death (a wartime romance with David Niven and Kim Hunter, from the director of The Red Shoes), and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. The last movie features Catherine Deneuve, every line is sung, and the film is a heartbreaker.
So what are your plans?
