It’s the great pop culture pumpkins!
Just put up a story about this weekend’s Great Pumpkin Fest in West Chester, which made me think of something fun: Pumpkins of pop culture (say THAT five times fast).
The Great Pumpkin: When Charles Schulz died in 2000, a lot of people commented they were sorry Charlie Brown never got to kick the football. Personally, I was disappointed Linus never got to see his patron saint of Halloween. Linus was always so sincere.
Jack Skellington from “The Nightmare Before Christmas”: Granted, Jack looks like he has a golf ball for a head, but he does call himself “the Pumpkin King.”
The Headless Horseman from Disney’s “Sleepy Hollow”: Come on, admit it. That image of a flaming pumpkin coming right at you was one of your first childhood traumas. Well, OK, it was certainly one of mine.
Pumpkinhead: Well, this guy didn’t really have a pumpkin for a head. He looked more like the mutated spawn of the Queen Mother from “Aliens.” As it happens, this film was directed by the late Stan Winston, the mechanical effects wizard who created the alien queen.
The “Halloween” Pumpkin: So you don’t think an ordinary jack-o-lantern is scary, eh? Light it up in the dark and play the theme from “Halloween” and then see what you think.
Did I miss any?
