Our “retro” drive-in, the Holiday

I’ve been to the Holiday Auto Theatre drive-in, just outside of Hamilton a number of times now, particularly because it’s “retro” - and I’m not just referring to the fact that it’s a drive-in.

While the Holiday shows mostly current movies, every once in awhile they reach into the vault and play something older. This past weekend, they did a Disney double - Toy Story 3, plus The Absent-Minded Professor - the ORIGINAL 1961 movie with Fred MacMurray, not the mediocre Flubber with Robin Williams from 1997.

I had intended to go Sunday night, but my schedule did not allow it. However, I have been to some of their other retro bookings. Last year I went when they played District 9, followed by a beautiful print of the original Jaws. Then the first time I went was a couple of years ago, when they played a holiday double of It’s a Wonderful Life, followed by White Christmas. I’m a sucker for the classics, so I find the retro bookings great fun.

Have you ever been to any of the Holiday’s “retro” bookings? What do you think of the drive in in general?

i used to go to the Hoilday Drive In at least twice a year. I stopped going because the owner ran the place like a nazi concetration camp. I refuse to give that man another dime of my hard earned money. i truly hope he goes out of buisness.

not a fan - The current owner is great. The drive-in is much better these days, and I enjoy it thoroughly!!

To Not A Fan: Fred (the previous owner) passed away a couple of years ago. Yes - he could be tough, but he also wanted everyone who attended to enjoy their time there (and not be bothered by those who were there just to cause trouble). Also, he was very tough on people who went over the speed limit there, because he didn’t want anyone to get hurt (read: little kids who are always running around there). But I get your point, he could be a ‘bit’ gruff (but he always treated us very well - even giving us a season pass one year). Not defending all of his actions, just trying to show why some of that behavior was exhibited. OIn the other hand - Todd and Mark (the current owners) are ex Disney employees who understand how to make the drive-in a fun (and safe!) place to spend an evening with your family or friends (or potential significant other! ;-). Check them out, it’s a different vibe there now, and I think you will enjoy yourself…

Several years ago, they had 1954’s “Creature from the Black Lagoon” in 3D. Now THAT is retro! I enjoyed that a lot.

I agree—it’s a great place to watch the classics. They are so much better on the big screen as compared to watching them at home on a smaller screen.
