Celebrated photographer Thomas Demand gives free lecture at the Cincinnati Art Museum
The Cincinnati Art Museum and the Art Academy of Cincinnati present the 2009 Lightborne Photography lecture with visiting artist Thomas Demand, 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in the museum’s Fath Auditorium.
Demand is a highly celebrated contemporary photographer, whose images The New York Times called “stunning” and whose work has been featured in an acclaimed solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.
Demand’s work documents intricate, life-size environments that he destroys after he has photographed them. A disciplined sculptor, Demand employs formal composition and perspective to create detailed facsimiles of architectural settings, parking lots, aircraft and other aspects of our daily life. Devoid of human habitation, Demand’s paper models trigger an inquiry into permanence and disposability and challenge the viewers’ ideas about reality and artifice. During the lecture, Demand will share the vision behind his meticulous constructions.
Ticket reservations are not required, but early arrival is suggested.
