Memorial highways bill to be signed by Gov. Kasich

COLUMBUS — Gov. John Kasich’s signature Monday afternoon renamed several state highways to honor those in the military who died serving the country, including a stretch of Ohio 4 in Fairfield to honor of Lance Cpl. Taylor Prazynski.

House Bill 65 now makes Ohio 4 from South Gilmore to Symmes roads in Fairfield also known as the Lance Cpl. Taylor Prazynski Memorial Highway.

“Some of them have been waiting for three years to get legislation done,” said Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, who introduced HB 65 bill in January, and one honoring just Prazynski two years ago. He said various state representatives had introduced separate bills honoring military men and women in the past three years, and ones to honor a state trooper and Cleveland-area police officer.

“I told the (Ohio) Speaker (of the House, William Batchelder, R-Medina,) that we needed to make it happen this year,” Combs said.

Eight families of those remembered and honored attended the 90-minute ceremony.

The bill was amended to honor 31 fallen Ohioans. Prazynski, a 2003 Fairfield High School graduate, was killed in action on May 9, 2005. His unit was conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Karmah, Iraq.

“The governor is very happy to be able to sign the bill. It’s a show of respect, remembrance and gratitude for Marines like Lance Cpl. Prazynski who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” Rob Nichols, a spokesman for Kasich.

John Prazynski said his son would be humbled, honored and thankful for the bill, just as he was Monday.

“It’s bitter-sweet,” Prazynski said. “We’re very, very thankful and it’s quite an honor. It’s really a great Father’s Day gift and I’m very appreciative. I am sure that he would be very honored and very pleased and very surprised.”

Fairfield Mayor Ron D’Epifanio is honored this portion of Ohio 4 will be named for Prazynski.

“What a wonderful family and what a wonderful way to keep the name of their outstanding son in everyone’s mind,” the mayor said, adding he’d do anything for the family to keep Prazynski’s name “out in the forefront.”
