Want to be a state rep?
The Butler County Republican Party is asking anyone seeking to fill the soon-to-be-vacant seat for Ohio’s 55th House District submit their intentions, along with a $125 screening fee, by 4 p.m. Thursday.
The screening committee meeting is to be determined, but screening committee chair Don Spurlock said it will be in June.
The 55th House District represents most of eastern Butler County, including West Chester and Liberty townships, and Middletown.
So far four people have expressed some level of interest in the 55th House District seat: Candice Keller, executive director of the Middletown Community Pregnancy Center; Margy Conditt, a former Liberty Twp. trustee; Liberty Twp. Trustee Christine Matacic; and West Chester Twp. resident Bruce Jones, a former Butler County Educational Service Center board member.
The Ohio Senate Republican Caucus is expected to accept the caucus’ screening committee recommendation to appoint Rep. Bill Coley today, Tuesday, May 24, to fill former Sen. Gary Cates’ seat. Cates resigned Monday to take the senior vice chancellor’s position with the Ohio Board of Regents.
For information, contact Spurlock at (513) 777-4550 or the party office at 893-5292.

TweetYager Stadium annexed
Yager Stadium is now in the city of Oxford following the Butler County Commission’s annexation approval of 47 acres of Miami University-owned property.
Oxford City Council previously adopted legislation stating it would accept the annexation request filed by the university if approved by the county commission. The land had sat in Oxford Twp. until Monday when the annexation became effective immediately after the unanimous county commission vote, said Human Resources Director and commission legal counsel Gary Sheets.
As reported by the Oxford Press in December, the annexation avoided Oxford having to refund Miami employees that worked on the annexed property. The city had assessed income taxes, according to City Manager Doug Elliott.
Oxford’s income tax rate is 2 percent.
Oxford Twp. will not lose any revenue since Miami University is a tax-exempt entity.
