Beckett not interested

Bradford Beckett had thought he was going to be the next Butler County Administrator when a Don Dixon-Cindy Carpenter agreement in January. That culminated — or at least the Beckett’s belief in the weeks after Carpenter’s November election win and her Jan. 3 swearing in.

Dixon and Carpenter state the 10 draft resolutions drawn up were “planning documents,” though they had planned to talk with the JournalNews editorial board prior to Carpenter’s swearing in. They had also planned a press conference that never happened on Jan. 3.

But with the job now available, Beckett, a former Cincinnati Councilman Chris Monzel aide, won’t be taking it — at least without being asked, he said Thursday afternoon. Beckett also worked for embattled former politician Mike Fox in the county commission office before his issues with Normap.

Furmon and Carpenter don’t think the Carpenter-Dixon administration shakeup had anything to do with Jewett’s decision. Dixon could not be immediately reached for comment. When asked about considering Beckett for the position, Carpenter said she doesn’t have an opinion.

“Right now we don’t have a list of those interested parties who would be available (as an interim administrator). We have to begin the search and keep an open mind to anyone who would be applying for the interim (or the permanent position),” Carpenter said. “But it has to be someone who’s not currently employed and willing to take on the position for a short period of time.”

I’ve got a great idea…maybe they can give it to Jeff Wyrick to keep him from running against Mary Swain! Oh, no wait…they are probably giving him Greg Sullivan’s job to keep him from running against Mary Swain! Either way the job gets done, right?

So many department heads and administrators have been run off by Dixon they have nobody left in county government to move up and be interim administrator while they do a search. Now someone unfamiliar with the government operations will need on the job training.

DWhat you want to bet they never do a search, post or advertise the position. Just another inside deal by the county commission. Will we ever see that openess Don Dixon promised?

Well, I guess they know what’s best. People will forget all about it by the next election.

Dixon and Carpenter will hire someone without a search or ever posting the position as being open. Once again Furmon will protest the action and call for openness in a search for an administrator.

What would be the point of a search? People go to the trouble of applying for these positions and then practically every time they hire someone internal. After the last time, I’d be amazed if anyone qualified bothered to apply. Butler is starting to get a bad reputation. And really, would you bother to relocate for a job where managers appear to be turning over every 18 months?

If I were given the choice of jobs, county administrator or cleaning porta-potties at the fairgrounds I’d be working at the fairgrounds and I’d see less crap.
