Combs again pushes for Hamilton native to be state icon
The Ohio House will vote on legislation to help make the children’s book “Lentil” the state children’s book, and designate Robert McCloskey, of Hamilton, the state’s children’s author.
The legislation passed the House State Government and Elections Committee unanimously last week.
“This is a unique opportunity to honor an Ohioan who took his talents to great heights and made a name for himself in the world of children’s literature,” Combs said.
McCloskey, born and raised in Hamilton authored “Lentil,” a story of a boy who couldn’t sing or whistle, and could not pucker his lips. The boy saved his pennies, bought a harmonica and eventually become a community hero.
The book features a number of illustrations from the city of Hamilton.
The initiative to make “Lentil” the state children’s book and McCloskey the state children’s author has failed in the past to get the bill passed. It had made it to the Ohio Senate in 2008, but failed to get a vote.
The Library of Congress, in observing its bicentennial in 2000, awarded McCloskey one of 78 “Living Legends” medals to Americans whose varied creative contributions to American life have made them living legends, according to a press release from Combs’ office.
McCloskey died in 2003.
In a 2009 article by Josh Sweigart, there could be protest by fans of other Ohio children’s authors — Natalie Babbitt (of Dayton) and R.L. Stine (of Columbus).
The bill will soon be voted on by the House.

TweetPetro appointed as Chancellor of Ohio Board of Regents
Since Sen. Gary Cates, R-West Chester Twp., had served on the Senate Education Committee in the state senate for six years (before being replaced by a freshman senator this year), I thought he’d be in line for this position. But apparently, Gov. John Kasich had other thoughts.
What are your thoughts?
Here’s the press release:
CLEVELAND — Today Gov. John R. Kasich appointed James M. Petro to serve as Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents. In his new role, Petro will lead the University System of Ohio — the largest comprehensive system of public higher education in the nation — and will work to ensure that Ohio provides the best opportunities possible for its students, graduates, and businesses. Petro’s appointment is effective March 14 and is subject to the advice and consent of the Ohio Senate.
Jim Petro is a native of Brooklyn, Ohio and a graduate of two Ohio universities - Denison University (Granville) and Case Western Reserve University School of Law (Cleveland). As Ohio Auditor of State (1995-2002), Petro provided financial and performance oversight of Ohio’s universities, and as Ohio Attorney General (2003-2006), Petro served as the chief legal officer to the state’s universities. Petro is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Citation from Denison University and is a member of Case Western Reserve University School of Law’s Honorary Society of Benchers.
Kasich’s announcement was originally scheduled to be made this evening at Cuyahoga Community College, Ohio’s oldest and largest public community college, but severe weather delayed Gov. Kasich’s return to Ohio from Washington, D.C. where he was attending the National Governors Association’s winter meeting.
