County Commission: A deeper look at campaign financing

Here’s a more detailed look at the Butler County Commission candidates’ campaign finance reports.

And there’s an interesting donation I intentionally buried in this post.

While Butch Hubble has outspent his opponent by about $2,500, according to campaign finance reports, Cindy Carpenter has raised about $2,300 more.

Pre-election campaign finance reports were due last week (Thursday, Oct. 21) and account for spending and donations up to Oct. 13.

Carpenter raised more than $9,300, which includes carryover funds from her previous campaign financing. She has about $5,000 left to spend. Hubble has spent all but $130 of his $6,930 campaign contributions. Nearly $3,000 was carried over from his 2008 bid for County Commission.

Most of Hubble’s money is from donations of $150 and below. He had 26 contributions which accounted for $1,516. Hubble also contributed $2,000 to his campaign.

Hubble did receive a couple of PAC donations, getting $100 from the Butler County Progressive PAC and $125 from the West Chester Democratic Women PAC.

Carpenter received 45 contributions under $150 which accounted for $3,235. But of the 15 donations greater than $200 accounted for $5,200. Also, eight of her Clerk of Courts employees contributed total of $325, and no donation was greater than $100.

Here’s where I’m burying the lead. This was an interesting donation.

Former Butler County GOP executive director Scott Owens contributed $250 to Carpenter. If you recall, Owens was involved in the federal Dynus Corp. trial. Last year he testified that he was paid $100,000 to make political connections with county officials.

What are your thoughts, especially with the Owens donation?

Mikey, you low-life, what crime has Scott Owens been convicted of? That’s right: none. STOP treating innocent people like criminals. This trash is why good people hate the media and you all are losing your shirts to the internet…

Chill Matty, I cant find anywhere in the post where it says Mr. Owens has been convicted of a crime. Mr. Pitman just stated facts,Mr. Owens was paid a $100,000 and he did testify in the Dynus trail. Are you somehow concerned someone might see that as criminal?

Confused, you are well named. Let me clear it up for you. There is only one reason to single out one donor and that is to smear him. That is uncalled for in a professional journalist. What Mikey is trying to do is not only smear Scott, but also Cindy Carpenter. Neither have been charged — let alone convicted — of wrong doing. This is merely a shoddy attempt to connect Carpenter to Dynus. It is pathetic, shallow, and dumb. People who have been paying attention see this ploy for what it is…and it isn’t news.

Matt you need to chill. Facts are facts!!The way you are acting someone must of done something wrong. If all parties are innocent, then there is need to defend them.It seams that the only one that is pathetic and shallow is you!
