A new sales tax? Candidates answer

Here’s an interesting question: Would you favor raising Butler County’s sales tax rate to ease the budget crisis?

Cindy Carpenter: “The people of this county do not want more taxes.”

She said she’s been talking with people and business owners, and she agrees with them about being against an increase sales tax.

Moderator Mike Williams (editorial page editor) asked would there be anything that would change her mind. She said there is nothing at this point that will change her mind.

Butch Hubble borrowed a famous line: “Read my lips, no more taxes.” Williams noted the man who said that (the first President Bush) went back on that. Hubble said he would not.

“We don’t need to tax the people anymore,” he said, adding the commissioners needs to manage the budget better.

I can’t afford any more tax. Taxes are already too high. We pay taxes or eat food. I can’t get my medicine. Medicare doesn’t cover cost any transportion to the doctors offic. Or I am sick of it. It didn;t used to be this way. America used to care about people. Don’t vote for any more taxes.

Butler county is penalizing itself by having the lowest sales tax in the region. All adjoining counties are at least 1/4 (as much as 3/4) percent higher. When businesses look at ButCo or WarrenCo. they see us with serious infrastructure issues that Warren doesn’t have. So we residents are saving 1/4 of one cent per dollar AND driving people out of the county. No one stops to think about 1/4 (or even 1/2) of a percent when making a purchase. Cut the Real Estate taxes if you want to bring in people.
