New website shows state worker, teacher pay; voting records and campaign contributions

From this story:

Want to know how much your kid’s teacher makes? Are you curious about how much your neighbor earns working for the state? Or maybe you want to know more about how your local lawmaker votes on key bills and who gives campaign contributions?

The Columbus-based Buckeye Institute just launched a website that makes it easy to search such data and more at http://buckeyeinstitute.org.

It’s a hit. In the first week, people spent close to 600 hours conducting 27,500 searches — mostly on teacher pay, according to Buckeye Institute Director Matt Mayer.

Mayer and the institute say they want to bring transparency to government so voters are better informed.

“How do I vote? Well, go to teacher salaries and see if they’re paid fairly or too much and then to the school data piece and see how they’re performing holistically. Are we getting a good bank for the buck?” Mayer said. “The key for us is let’s put the info in the hands of the voter in an easy, clickable way.”

The website pulls data from school report cards, payroll databases from the state and school districts, campaign finance reports, lobbyist filing statements, federal labor statistics, and other government sources. It’s presented in a clear, intuitive fashion.

The site includes pension calculators for teachers and state employees — giving Ohioans an estimate of how much the public employee would make in retirement and at what cost, assuming certain conditions are met.

The data isn’t perfect: It does not include data on charter school employees and some districts’ data does not include central office administrator pay.

The institute, a nonprofit funded by individual and foundation donations, hopes to add higher education salaries as well as pay for local government workers in the future.

Really interesting post as for me. It’d be really cool to read something more concerning that theme. Thnx for giving this data.

By But how accurate is it?

Just because you see it on the internet, does NOT mean it is correct. I checked information about me and found it says I am still employed at a school making 40K+ a year. The thing is, I RETIRED (at 39K) at the end of the 2007-2008 school year after 35 years. So there is over 80K of MISinformation just on 1 person.

Unfortunately, a quick look at just Lakota’s LEA leadership incomes shows there’s some significant flaws: President, Judy Buschle - $92,388 2009 Cox Ohio data vs. No Listing under the Buckeye Institute; Treasurer, Dennis Beck - $77,467 2009 Cox Ohio data vs. $61,752 2009 Buckeye Institute data; 1st VP, Sharon Mays - $74,054 2009 Cox Ohio data vs. $69,103 2009 Buckeye Institute data; 2nd VP, Terri Ploscowe - $79,170 2009 Cox Ohio data vs. $65,661 2009 Buckeye Institute data; Secretary, Deb Turner - $75,326 2009 Cox Ohio data vs. $71,309 2009 Buckeye Institute data. As it’s my understanding Cox gets their info directly from schools and other government entities versus the state I’d trust Cox’s info first.

This question is for the decision makers at Cox Ohio. Why would you not verify the accuracy of information on a website before publishing a link in your paper, or publish an article stating that there is inaccurate information at that site once you became aware of it, unless your goal is to use an emotionally charged issue to fire up comments and thus appear to have a much larger following than you really have. I personally checked the information on 3 people I know (one of them is me). 2 retired in June 2007 and are still shown as having earned a salary from the school district in both 2008 and 2009, according to the BI website. The third one, a classroom teacher, is shown as working full time (183 and 185 day contracts) in 2 different school systems in each of the years 2006-2009. I know there is not a second or third shift in any of the schools listed as that person’s employer. I think you really fell down on this one, much as you did when you only reported part of the story on the public pension systems back in January. It is really starting to look like you folks have an “agenda”.

The site is a joke. It is inaccurate. It shows people being paid for full-time jobs that they left years ago. There was absolutely no attempt to be accurate. “The data isn’t perfect” is one of the great understatements of all time.

“Lakota Parents” you must have been educated elsewhere. Cox gets their info from tax forms. Therefore any income is counted (not jut what these folks make teaching.. like coaching, second jobs, etc.). The website in the article gets their info straight from contracts. Josh Sweigart won’t say this because by ignoring the difference allows for controversy which is great in his line of work (He and Lindsay Hilty leave stuff out all of the time to try to gain readers…..)…

Educated elsewhere Cox vs. Public? Funny. If you knew you’d just embarrass yourself more than you’ve done here. Of course Cox’s info captures all earnings, information that they get upon request from individual public entities (at least they used to) or do you believe they just ask the IRS? The discrepancies with the Buckeye Institute data, which they obtain from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Administrative Services, may very well be due to the omission of supplemental contracts, etc. though that’s not specifically spelled out on their website nor was that given as a reason why upon my direct interaction with them - hence, they’re reviewing their data. So, instead of erroneously trying to correct me you need to reconsider the reason for my first note: to bring to people’s attention that their data is flawed in what it presents. Anyone who uses this site and/or the sources they use will not be getting an accurate representation of education’s true costs. Your unsubstantiated opinion that Sweigart and Hilty knowingly shared flawed data to arouse controversy is funny too.

And what about adding some more images? I don’t want to offend anyone, text is really nice. But as I’ve heard humans acquire information much more efficient if they see some useful pics. Stacy Swift
