Combs, Jones urge immigration measure that “mirrors” Arizona’s - The letter
A local lawmaker and Butler County’s sheriff are urging the state to move ahead with immigration reforms that “mirror” a controversial new law in Arizona that critics say creates a “police state.”
In a letter sent Tuesday, April 27, state Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, and Sheriff Richard K. Jones urged the governor and leaders of the General Assembly to move ahead with stalled state immigration legislation.
Here is the letter:
Analysis:
Bills pending in the General Assembly include one, sponsored by Combs, which requires employers to check prospective hires’ legal status or risk noncompliance with tax law. Others would allow local law enforcement more ability to assist federal immigration officials.
“We have illegals who are taking jobs away from Americans in this bad economy, they are scamming the welfare system and bringing drugs and the violence that goes with it into this country,” Jones said. We have to be able to stop it.”
All of the bills fall short of a controversial Arizona bill signed into law Friday, April 23, which makes it a crime under state law to be in the U.S. illegally.
The measure — set to take effect in late July or early August — directs state and local police to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are illegal.
Combs said the Arizona law works for Arizona. But before Ohio considers following suit — which has been proposed — it should work on measures already in the making.
“We don’t need an Arizona bill, that’s not what we’re after,” Combs said. “We do need some checks and balances in Ohio. Lets get those done and then we’ll have some success.”
Others worry, though, about the role of racism and racial profiling in immigration measures that allow cops to stop people in the street and demand they show proof of citizenship.
“There’s no logical way, no lawful way, to determine reasonable suspicion of immigration law violation,” said Cleveland attorney David Leopold, president-elect of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.
“It opens the door effectively to a mandate to racially profile,” he said. “What Arizona has essentially done is tantamount to a police state creation.”

Has anyone read the Arizona bill? I have and it’s not what everybody says it is. If you’re illegal than you should worry. If you’re not, what’s the problem. Wal-Mart just asked for my ID yesterday. The policeman who pulled my son over for loud pipes asked for his ID. So, illegals should have the right to say ..no?

I think it is outstanding what the Arizona Gov. Brewer did? It needed to be done long before now. The protestors don’t have a leg to stand on. It is stupid to use the term profiling when it is obvious the majority coming over the border down there are Latino/Mexican. If they are legal it is no problem. If they aren’t, they are in the wrong. Obama can take his misguided opinion and smack Rahm Emanuel with it.

Zookeeper, Wal-Mart wanted your ID because you were writing a check, the police ask your son for his ID because he was obviously breaking a law. Rick Jones wants an ID because someones sink is brown. Because I have a dark tan I shouldnt have to provide my papers. In fact our US Congressman could well be profiled and ask for his papers under this Jones/Combs Immigration Bill.

This is all about Jones trying to deflect his $100,ooo mistake. Someone you knowingly violates the US Constitution is not a hero. Its a shame that after laying off deputies because he said he lacked the funds, the county is sending $100,000 to Mexico. Jones himself should pay for this out of his campaign fund, after all this was just a media stunt by old spotlight Jones to get his name and face in the news to promote himself to hero worshipers.

People who say if you’re not illegal you have nothing to worry about are WRONG - read about the American born truck driver in Arizona who early this month provided his commercial driver’s licence and SS# when asked for ID but was arrested becasue he didn’t have his birth certificate! Who keeps their birth cert. in their veheicle???

Bobbie, read the law. You are quoting Liberal talking points that are extremely INACCURATE. You can NOT be stopped because you are Latino. IF you are stopped for some other crime, and it becomes doubtful that you are a Citizen, you will be asked to prove it. For example, you are stopped for speeding. You don’t speak a word of English, you have no license, and you have no SS#. THEN you will be asked if you are here legally. You can’t pick and choose what laws you want to enforce. Being here illegally is a crime, just like robbery, speeding, assault, or anything else. Should we just ignore this crime because they like it here and want to stay. If that’s true, I should be able to walk in your house and take your TV, because I need it more than you do?

Amy, It’s a nice story, but “Abdon” was detained by ICE. This had ZERO to do with Arizona’s new law. These ICE agents were acting on laws that have been in place for years. If they acted incorrectly, they should certainly be reprimanded and re-trained to act within the confines of the law. However, when the act on hunches or intuition: That’s how most crimes are solved! Why does everyone continue to say arresting criminals is unConstitutional?

Pls help by making the following two contacts, regarding the Ohio, E-verify bill. Thank you. Armond Budish - Speaker of the House, (614) 466-5441 district08@ohr.state.oh.us Sandra S. Hardwood - Judiciary Chairwoman, (614) 466-3488 district65@ohr.state.oh.us Re.: HB 184, E - Verify Bill TALKING POINT: Please ensure that HB 184 — Rep. Combs mandatory E-Verify bill gets a fair up-or-down vote in the Judiciary Committee. It took over 20 years to create today’s illegal immigration crisis, and it may take another ten to substantially reduce our current illegal population, but enacting HB 184 this session will start Ohio down that road. This will protect legal workers from unfair foreign labor competition, free up illegal-alien jobs for unemployed Americans, reduce illegal-alien crime, and lessen the burden on taxpayers during this recession. Your constituents are counting on you — please don’t let us down! Looking for your support,
