Carpenter, Jolivette have wide lead in campaign cash
From this story:
The two sitting county officeholders are taking in and shelling out far more than the other four Republican candidates in the May 4 primary for Butler County commissioner.
This is according to finance forms filed with the Butler County Board of Elections by the Thursday, April 22 deadline. They cover contributions and expenditures from the January filing deadline through April 13.
In that time, Clerk of Courts Cindy Carpenter outspent the other candidates with expenditures totaling $18,787. Her biggest single expense so far has been $6,464 for billboards.
But Commission President Gregory Jolivette has raised more than all of his challengers combined: $28,255.
And he’s still sitting on $12,899 in the final weeks of the campaign, while Carpenter only had $311 on the filing deadline.
Carpenter received $6,728 in contributions and still had $7,870 from her previous filing.
Former Middletown City Councilman Paul Nenni collected $9,055 during this time — largely from Middletown residents and businesses — and has spent only $735.
Most of the candidates are also relying heavily on loans from themselves or local vendors.
Former West Chester Twp. Trustee Jose Alvarez’s campaign is largely self-financed. He loaned himself $7,000 and raised $2,575. He came in third in expenditures at $8,561.
Hamilton resident Wes Retherford also borrowed more than he took in. He collected $1,918 from supporters, and owes a Cincinnati company $4,750 for “voter targeting,” according to the filing. He is left with $295 in cash.
Hamilton resident Jesse VonStein did not file a form, which is not required for campaigns that collect or spend less than $1,000.
Democrat Butch Hubble, who is uncontested in the primary, has $3,089 on hand.
