Census return rate going up
Since we wrote this story about Butler County’s return rate being 55 percent, the local census return rate has gone up to 63 percent.

The U.S. Census Bureau wants to know how many people there are in the country and where they’re living on Census Day today, April 1.
More than half of the residents of Butler County have mailed back census forms. For those who haven’t, another will be in the mail this week, according to census officials.
As of Wednesday, March 31, the mail-back response rate was 53 percent in Hamilton, 54 percent in Fairfield and 50 percent in Oxford. It was 55 percent countywide, 51 percent across Ohio. Hamilton’s response rate in the 2000 census was 74 percent, while the state’s was 77 percent.
Those who don’t fill out the form or don’t answer all the questions will likely get a phone call or home visit from a census taker, according to Donna Marsh, regional census bureau spokeswoman.
Census officials said those who boycott the census could end up costing taxpayers more money as enumerators are hired to fill in the blanks.
In addition to determining Ohio’s representation in Congress, an accurate count is important in properly distributing $400 billion in federal funds awarded based on census data.

Maybe people waited until April 1st to mail them in. That is Census Day after all.

I agree Duty. How can the ones mailed in early be valid? It strictly says count the residents as of April 1st.

I love the stupid Census commercials that tell you to send it in to get your “fair share” of money. How can one get a “fair” share of someone else’s money? That is the typical attitude of a liberal.
